Disney yesterday committed to investing $1b in OpenAI and allowing Sora users access to more than 200 Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters for the creation of short-form videos. The three-year licensing deal will result in user-generated clips appearing on Disney+. It was only two days ago that Disney had sent Google a cease and desist order, accusing its AI models of widespread copyright violation. That fight has been going on between major Hollywood studios and tech for several years. Yesterday’s announcement strikes at the heart of last year’s writers strike, which in part sought protection for traditional entertainment industry jobs that could be lost to AI. Disney’s decision to license its intellectual property to OpenAI is major shift in that battle. The deal gives Disney structured participation and clearer boundaries for official channels even though it will lose some control over how its closely guarded characters will appear on digital platforms. It also addresses the reality that AI video creation is exploding right now. https://www.emarketer.com/content/disney-bets–1-billion-on-openai-fan-made-ai-video-goes-mainstream
Costco beat Wall Street’s fiscal first quarter expectations. Sales were up 8.2% overall and digital sales jumped more than 20% compared with one year ago. They also reported a strong start to the holiday sales season with e-commerce generating over $250m in non-food orders. The company also benefitted from an increase in its membership fees beginning with September 2024 renewals. That’s always been an important part of Costco’s business plan for generating revenue and keeping merchandise pricing low. Costco plans to open at least 30 new club stores per year for the foreseeable future. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/11/costco-cost-earnings-q1-2026.html
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
New this weekend at the movies, a comedy-drama starring Emma Mackey – “Ella McCay”, a remake of the holiday horror film “Silent Night, Deadly Night”, a drama set in the old west called “Eastern Western”, and the 25th anniversary re-release of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas” starring Jim Carrey. https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/december/2025?view=list
At some point this weekend, Disney’s “Zootopia 2” is expected to exceed $1b in ticket sales. It’s the second Hollywood film this year to do that. The live action remake of “Lilo and Stich” is the other one. About three fourths of the ticket sales have been internationally, highlighting a shift in the domestic market towards PG-rated family films and away from PG-13 and R-rated features. The biggest film release worldwide this year has been China’s “Ne Zha 2” which has sold $2.2b worth of tickets since its January release. Nearly $450m of Zootopia’s take was in the Chinese market, overshadowing the $233m earned here in the U.S. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/12/disney-zootopia-2-1-billion-global-box-office.html
Food marketing experts are saying the next grocery obsession is likely to be fiber. Protein saw a massive spike in popularity this year. But 2026 is expected to be the year of fiber. PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, Nestle and Olipop got the gut health ball rolling this year with prebiotic drinks. Next year, the sector is expected to really take off. According to food research company Mintel, 90% of women and 97% of men aren’t getting their daily fiber requirements – somewhere between 25 and 38 grams per day. And people are starting to take notice. 22% of U.S. consumers now say high fiber content is one of the most important factors when shopping for food. That’s up from just 17% four years ago. 42% believe the attribute of “high fiber” on a nutrition label or food packaging means it’s healthy. Watching fiber intake is nothing new. It’s been identified as a need for health in older people for many years. Now the two types of fiber – soluble and insoluble are being recognized as improving digestion, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, and making you feel full longer for all ages. That last attribute may help people lose weight. One University of Michigan dietician fiber’s role as a “street sweeper” for the body may be one of the reasons it’s now getting the spotlight. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/12/fibermaxxing-high-fiber-foods-pepsi-nestle-olipop.html
