Beginning today, customers of SDG&E can take advantage of expanded super off-peak pricing for electricity weekdays from 10a to 2p all year long.  The low-price hours were previously only available in March and April, reflecting when electricity is more available.  But with more clean energy now being added to the grid during daylight hours, costs for the utility during those hours are lower.  SDG&E’s “Time-of-Use” pricing plans are intended to encourage customers to shift their energy use when possible.  Overnight super off-peak hours will continue to be midnight to 6a weekdays and midnight to 2p on weekends and holidays.  https://www.kpbs.org/news/quality-of-life/2026/05/01/sdg-e-begins-year-round-off-peak-weekday-pricing

President Trump said today that he’s dissatisfied with Iran’s latest peace proposal.  He didn’t mention specifics, but said that Tehran may never “get there” on a deal.  He also said that he’ll increase the tariffs on cars and trucks from the European Union to 25% next week because the EU “is not complying with our fully agreed-to Trade Deal.”  He did not specify in his Truth Social post his exact objections.  The most recent tariff rate on EU automotive imports is 10%.  This new tariff hits at a moment when the Iran war and the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz is already crushing the worlds’ economies. https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-eu-autos-trade-800e6ed469b73cd4c144edb65e40ba72

President Trump says he’s still considering a taxpayer-funded deal to bail out bankrupt Spirit Airlines, even though industry experts say it’s clear the major airlines have eaten Spirit’s lunch by emulating many of the trappings of budget air carriers like Spirit and Frontier, while offering miles and other perks.  Meanwhile, Spirit is preparing to shut down, potentially in the next few days as negotiations for a government bailout have broken down. https://apnews.com/article/spirit-airlines-trump-bailout-bankruptcy-d42060b6a7bdac6ffc1d1e083af58f59

The GLP-1 weight loss drug sector is booming.  Eli Lilly, makers of Mounjaro reported first quarter revenue up 56% from one year ago and exceeding Wall Street expectations by more than 10%.  It was Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic that kicked off the GLP-1 craze.  But Lilly is outpacing its rival with 60% of the obesity and diabetes drug market.  The next frontier is weight loss drug in pill form.  Again, Novo Nordisk has the jump with Wegovy.  But Lilly reports 20k people have already started taking its Foundayo pills, which was just approved about a month ago.  Further helping the two drug giants, the FDA has proposed excluding the active ingredients from the two companies’ GLP-1 drugs from the list of drugs that compounders can obtain in bulk.  If approved, it would deter copycat makers like Hims & Hers from producing their own weight loss drugs.  www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, one of the most-hyped sequels in years – “The Devil Wear Prada 2”.  The main stars from the original movie twenty years ago all return and have been making the talk show circuit in force lately – Anne Hathaway as Andy, Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel.  The story was based on the real-life experience of author, Lauren Weisberger when she worked as assistant to legendary editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour.  Also in wide release, the drama “Omaha”, the animated family animated adventure, “Animal Farm”, and the drama, “Casa Grande”. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/calendar/?ref_=bo_nb_wey_tab

SDG&E announced plans for a high-voltage electric transmission line from the Imperial Valley through San Diego backcountry to the coast near Orange County almost a year ago.  Environmental review and permitting at the state level are now beginning on what has been named the Golden Pacific Powerlink.  There will be virtual open houses for several weeks to gather public opinion.  Opposition to the project is ramping up as the California Public Utilities Commission considers where and if it will get built.  The preliminary chosen route for the 145-mile line passes south of Borrego Springs, between the Santa Ysabel and Los Coyotes reservations, generally following Highway 79 into Temecula through DeLuz and west across the northern edge of Camp Pendleton to a proposed substation north of the former San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.  The Golden Pacific Powerlink would be the first new 500-kilovolt transmission line in Southern California since the $2b Sunrise Powerlink went into service in 2012.  If approved, construction would begin in 2029 and last about three years.  Virtual open houses about the project are scheduled for noon and 5:30p on May 12 and 14.  Register at www.GoldenPacificPowerlink.com .  In-person open houses will follow this summer. https://www.kpbs.org/news/environment/2026/04/30/sdge-says-its-proposed-transmission-line-would-meet-growing-power-demand-but-opposition-is-growing
