LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
The Blue Wave in yesterday’s elections was bigger than polls and pundits predicted with Democrats taking control of both the House and Senate and flipping the governors’ office in more than half a dozen traditionally Republican states. President Trump said he’ll accept yesterday’s results and will work with, rather than against Congress. Many are questioning that last statement after the White House posted on social media a photo of a red baseball cap with the word “VETO” on it. Trump also blamed Fox News for the Republican losses. There may be some truth in that since a lot fewer people are watching the traditionally conservatively-biased Fox News network. Last week, Fox reported that its year-over-year viewership was down 27% in October. The next two years in Washington are impossible to predict with the President retaining executive authority over areas including defense, foreign policy and, in some instances trade. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/04/trump-fox-news-gop-midterm-losses.html
Here are the results as of 11a. In Congress, Democrats now hold 229 seats to the GOP’s 138 with 68 still to be decided. It only takes 218 for a majority. In the Senate, it’s 52 for Democrats, 44 Republican and 2 independents with 2 seats yet to call. 51 makes a majority. https://www.npr.org/sections/elections/

For U.S. Representative in the San Diego portion of the 48th District, Democrat Marni Von Wilpert defeated Jim Desmond 59% to 41%. In the 49th, Democrat Mike Levin defeated Armen Kurdian 60% to 40%. In the 50th, Democrat Scott Peters defeated Steve Cohen 61% to 39%. The margins were even bigger for Sara Jacobs in the 51st, and Juan Vargas in the 52nd District. For the state Senate, Steve Padilla won in a landslide over Art Hodges in the San Diego Portion of the 18th district. The 32nd district is too close to call with Democrat Tiffanie Tate leading Kelly Seyarto by 2 ½ points. Catherine Blakespear won the 38th. Mara Elliott led the 40th over Kristie Bluece-Lane by 4 points. For the State Assembly, Sergio Farias won the San Diego portion of the 74th District. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up sharply on news of the election’s Blue Wave. The market is having one of its best days this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained almost 3%. The S&P 500 rose 1.8%. And the Nasdaq was up 2.1%. Comex gold shot up 3 ½%. That’s $139 to $4,079.40 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures plunged $8.50 to $87.55 a barrel.
Stocks normally do well right after mid-term elections, as uncertainties leading up to it become clearer. Stock in solar-power companies, dollar stores and hospital owners led the charge. Not so much for the artificial intelligence industry, Trump’s social media company and businesses owned by Elon Musk. Defense and big oil stocks are also down. Oil stocks had rallied throughout the Iran War which sent crude oil prices soaring. Wall Street strategists have warned investors not to get swept up in the election because it may not make much difference for the overall market in the long term. Stock prices depend more on where company profits and interest rates are headed than who controls what branch of government. https://apnews.com/article/stock-markets-ai-earnings-oil-4d12764c0b3ce38ffde3077712811182
Shares in CVS Health plunged 12% today on news that it will split into two separate publicly traded companies by the first half of 2028. Shares had been up 70% in the two years since David Joyner became CEO. CVS’s 9k pharmacies will split from the company’s insurance business and pharmacy benefit manager, Caremark, which is one of the nation’s three largest PBMs. The move is to try to reverse the company’s massive $78b acquisition of insurance company, Aetna, and undo the vertically integrated healthcare conglomerate it created in 2018. The split will be one of the largest corporate splits in history. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/04/cvs-to-split-off-drugstore-business.html
Kraft-Heinz announced it will divest its coffee business to One Rock Capital Partners for $650m. Kraft-Heinz will use most of that to pay down debt. Brands involved include Maxwell House and Gevalia. The deal is expected to close the middle of next year. In its quarterly earnings report, the company raised its 2026 outlook. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/04/cvs-to-split-off-drugstore-business.html

McDonald’s is planning new value bundles next year after a drop in foot traffic at U.S. restaurants in the third quarter. One example that’s already being tested for eight weeks at about 1,900 U.S. restaurants is a mix and match fixed-price deal … for example, a McChicken sandwich and small fries for $3.50. About 4k franchisees have decided not to wait for test results and have launched meal deals of their own. Although the 0.2% drop in same-store sales for July through September was not as bad as Wall Street expected, it was the first retreat for McDonald’s numbers in over a year and a half. McDonald’s has been tweaking its value offerings for more than two years, trying to lure back low-income customers and better compete with chains like Taco Bell, which has 10 menu items at $3 or less. Third quarter foot traffic fell 2.6% across the entire fast food sector. https://apnews.com/article/mcdonalds-inflation-fast-food-earnings-7fee4f873c6230e20f9e366e35094444
