LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A reminder that we set our clocks back one hour tomorrow night.

221 Vote Centers are now open across San Diego County.  They’ll operate daily from 8a to 5p through November 2.  Election Day hours are 7a to 8p.  At the centers you can drop off a mail ballot, vote in person, register to vote or update your voter registration and cast your ballot at the same time, or receive accessibility assistance and voting materials in other languages.  Go to www.SDVote.com for Voting Center locations, Drop Box locations and all other pertinent info for Tuesday’s election.  The website for Riverside County voters is www.VoteInfo.net .   https://www.countynewscenter.com/221-vote-centers-open-for-november-general-election/

There was a head-on collision involving two vehicles this morning on Old Highway 395 at Dulin Road south of Highway 76.  The collision was reported at approximately 6:36 a.m. between a red Honda Civic and a blue Hyundai with both vehicles sustaining significant damage.  Few other details, but the accident was reported on CHP logs as a fatality.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/10/29/news/fatal-crash-reported-in-head-on-collision-on-old-highway-395-near-dulin-road/83141.html

A Riverside County music teacher suspected of multiple child sexual assaults was arrested yesterday at his home in Woodcrest.  Omar Garcia Herrada is suspected of molesting two young children with Sheriff’s investigators looking for additional victims. 54-year old Herrada was booked into French Valley jail with a court appearance scheduled for Monday. https://patch.com/california/lakeelsinore-wildomar/rivco-music-teacher-suspected-multiple-child-sexual-assaults

There are now at least four San Diego County citizens’ groups hoping to keep SDG&E from building its proposed Golden Pacific Powerlink (GPP) transmission line through their communities.  They include Save Valley Center, Save Pauma Valley, Save Palomar Mountain, and Save Warner Springs.  An alternate route through Temecula Wine Country has spawned similar groups in Riverside County.  The southern route that roughly follows Highway 76 and the San Luis Rey River valley was introduced as an alternative to the original route proposed along Highway 79 and cutting through Temecula Wine Country in August. https://www.newsbreak.com/valley-roadrunner-404122102/4972648644339-save-valley-center-seeks-to-stop-golden-pacific-powerlink

A herd of over 500 goats are grazing at Star Valley Park in Valley Center as part of a new program by County Fire to prevent wildfires.  The goats are expected to mow down potential fuel for fires on 38 acres over the next two weeks.  This is the first deployment under the program the county hopes will be paid for by a $300k grant from Cal Fire’s Wildfire Prevention Program.  Grants are pending.  https://www.countynewscenter.com/goats-reduce-wildfire-risk-at-star-valley-park-in-new-county-pilot-program/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down on disappointing earnings reports from Intel and Amazon.  The Dow fell almost a full percent.  The S&P 500 was down 1.9%.  And the tech-heavy Nasdaq was off by 3.1% – its worst day since June.  Gold futures plunged more than 3%, or $128.10 to $3,903.30 an ounce on the Comex.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up $2.88 to $104.88 a barrel.

Intel shares fell a whopping 29% today – the tech company’s worst day in more than 50 years.  They project ongoing softness in the PC market.  The plunge is a major hit to the Trump administration, which led the government into taking a 10% stake in Intel more than a year ago.  It’s still a profitable investment, but its value declined today by $12b.  Nvidia’s books will now show $6b less after the decline of its stake in Intel.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/amazon-intel-earnings-big-tech-ai-spending-concerns.html

Amazon’s third quarter report, though not devastating, was enough below expectations for earnings, overall revenue, and core retail sales and advertising growth that shares in the retail giant slid as much as 7% today.  This, combined with a disappointing report from Intel and this week’s drop for Alphabet dragging most all tech stocks with it caused today’s extreme decline on the Nasdaq exchange. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/30/amazon-earnings-analysts-stock.html

Starbucks is yet another company to post disappointing, or at least mixed results for Q3.  They show that turnaround efforts may be working.  As part of turnaround plans, more than 1,700 café makeovers were completed by the end of the fiscal year. Comparable sales for U.S. stores topped expectations, but fell short of estimates in international markets.  Projected adjusted earnings per share were slightly above Wall Street expectations, but the anticipated revenue decline of 1% moving forward was weaker than the 1.4% net sales growth expected by stock analysts.  Starbucks reports that the North American rollout of its fall menu, including the ever-popular pumpkin spice latte was the company’s strongest-ever autumn launch day.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/29/starbucks-sbux-q4-2026-earnings.html

Shares in Chipotle gained 7% as the Mexican Grill reported same-store sales growth and the opening of 84 new company-owned locations and five international ones run by licensees.  It plans to open as many as 360 new stores in the upcoming year.  Chipotle’s strongest growth was with low-income customers, who for the first time, made up a majority of its business.  Net sales were up 9.6%.  The raw lettuce scare caused July sales to dip.  But growth has since resumed.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/28/chipotle-mexican-grill-cmg-q3-2026-earnings.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, “The Only Living Pickpocket in New York” is a crime thriller starring John Turturro.  “The Mongoose” is an action thriller starring Liam Neeson and Marisa Tomei. “Christmas at the Kringles” is an action comedy horror starring Ron Livingston and Rachel Bilson.  And there’s the Disney sport documentary “Everest: The Other Side”. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/calendar/?ref_=bo_nb_we_tab

On this day in music history – October 30,

  • 1961, two days after a fan asked Brian Epstein at his NEMS music store for The Beatles’ German single, “My Bonnie”, a release unknown to him, Epstein solved the mystery and first began to learn about the local Liverpool group.  He couldn’t find the record because it was released under the name Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers since “Beatles” resembles a vulgar German slang word and the group so far had only played backup for Sheridan.
  • In 1967, Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones admitted to possession of cannabis and allowing his apartment to be used for its smoking, but pleaded not guilty to charges of methamphetamine and cocaine possession.  The plea was accepted and Jones was sentenced to nine months in prison.  He was released on bail the following day.
  • On the same day Tyrannosaurus Rex recorded an episode of “Top Gear” for Radio 1 in England – the first group without a recording contract to ever do that.
  • In 1970, Elton John released his third album, “Tumbleweed Connection”.
  • On the same day Hotlegs made their live debut opening for The Moody Blues at the Festival Hall in London.  Members of the group went on to become 10cc.
  • Meanwhile on this side of the pond, Jim Morrison of The Doors was fined and sentenced to six months in jail after being found guilty of exposing himself onstage at a concert in Miami.
  • In 1971, John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band were at #1 with the album “Imagine” which contained two songs attacking Paul McCartney for whom Lennon blamed for the breakup of The Beatles.  The songs were “How Do You Sleep” and “Crippled Inside”.
  • On the same day, Pink Floyd released their 6th studio album, “Meddle” which contained the tracks “One of These Days” and the 23-minute “Echoes” which took up all of side 2.
  • In 1978, Blondie released their second single, “Hanging on the Telephone”
  • In 1982, Men At Work were at #1 on the singles chart with “Who Can It Be Now” – the video for which was in high rotation on MTV.
  • In 1998, all four original members of Black Sabbath reunited for one night to play “Paranoid” on The David Letterman Show.
  • In 2000, a web site was launched to get children interested in basic physics. BritneySpears.ac features photos of the then-popular singer … illustrating mathematical equations and physics theories, obviously.
  • In 2002 Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC was killed by an assassin’s bullet at his recording studio in Queens.
  • In 2015, Adele was at #1 with “Hello” the first track on her third album “25”. The track was streamed 7.3m times in its first week of release, breaking a record previously held by Justin Bieber.
