Acting on an executive order from Mayor Todd Gloria, the San Diego City Council yesterday unanimously approved an ordinance to place a 45-day moratorium on the development of new data centers within the city. The council has the power to extend the suspension for another 10 months and 15 days. The city of Poway also currently prohibits new data centers and Escondido extended an active moratorium in that city through August 2027. The County is working through research phases to evaluate rules for data centers in unincorporated areas. The San Diego city moratorium will not affect plans by Manchester Financial Group for a data center on Naval Base Point Loma’s Old Town Campus because that’s federal property and outside of local jurisdiction. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/27/san-diego-city-council-passes-a-temporary-moratorium-on-data-centers/

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Milwaukee Brewers win streak was broken – probably by their own fielding errors. In a four-hour 12-inning game, Tampa managed its first win of the series 4-3. Just three outs from winning the series, Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy pulled left-hander Aaron Ashby who’d retired all seven batters he faced and broke the record for scoreless innings by a reliever in a single postseason. Two pitching changes and a throwing error later, reliever Shane Drohan loaded the bases and pinch hitter Ben Williamson drove home the winning run. Game 5 is tonight at 5p on Fox. If needed, Game 6 will be Friday in Milwaukee. No team has ever come back from being down three games to none to win a World Series. Only the Red Sox have done it to win a pennant series.
Without marquee teams playing this year, ratings for World Series broadcasts were expected to be down this year. But, so far, they’ve at least exceeded expectations. The audience for the first two games was down only 6% compared with last year’s series between the Dodgers and Blue Jays. But they’ve still been the most-watched shows in their time slots with an average per game of 11.05m viewers. That’s 20% more than two years ago with the series between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks. This proves that Milwaukee has a steady fan base in the Midwest that’s grown over the past several strong seasons for the team. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/50302397/world-series-ratings-6-first-2-games-rays-brewers

San Diego biotech company, Artiva Biotherapeutics is laying off almost all of its workforce and cancelling its lead immunotherapy treatment for rheumatoid arthritis after it failed its Phase 2 trial and two patients involved in trials died. Neither death appeared to be related to the trial of AlloNK. Early results were promising, but the long-term durability did not meet the threshold for continued development. This comes just five months after the company raided about $300m from investors. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/27/san-diego-biotech-lays-off-nearly-all-its-staff-after-drug-trial-failure-and-2-patient-deaths/
The cost of flying is soaring higher than the planes you’re riding in. The nation’s largest budget carrier, Frontier Airlines reported a 71% increase in fares for the third quarter. Yet it still lost money due to the high cost of fuel. In spite of rising fares, customers kept booking. Passenger count was up 18% to 9.8m in the third quarter. That’s up 1.5m from one year ago. Other airlines are reporting similar trends. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/28/frontier-airlines-airfare-plane-tickets.html
