LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A federal court of appeals yesterday dismissed the Justice Department’s request to force California election officials to set aside about 20k ballots the Trump administration says may have been cast by alleged non-citizens.  The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th circuit ruled 2-1 that it lacked jurisdiction over the appeal and granted the motion by Los Angeles County election officials to dismiss the case.  The justices criticized the Justice Department effort to stop the ballots with counting of mail ballots for next week’s election already underway.  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/appeals-court-dismisses-doj-trump-california-ballots/

The U.S. Border Patrol yesterday announced the seizure of nearly 52 pounds of fentanyl along I-15 near the Mission Road exit.  The Honda CR-V reportedly exited the northbound freeway at Mission, got back on the southbound side, then stopped on its own.  During a consensual search, a duffel bag with 22 bundles of suspected narcotics was found in the back seat.  The driver and seized drugs were taken to the Border Patrol station in Murrieta. https://patch.com/california/temecula/52-pounds-fentanyl-seized-15-freeway-near-temecula-usbp

After 27 years, the annual Escondido Halloween Madhouse is coming to an end.  Resident Kelly DeSorbo has run it out of her home as a family project built with and for the community since 1999.  It had 1,300 visitors last year.  A path takes you through rooms and hallways filled with clowns, scary pumpkins and a cast of characters familiar to horror fans.  DeSorbo says it takes three months to assemble.  But now she’s ready to rest.  The final haunt is on Halloween this Saturday at 10275 Spruce Woodland Parkway.  As always, it’s free with donations accepted and optional fast passes. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/escondido-madhouse-haunted-house-to-close-for-good-after-27-years-on-halloween-night

The National Weather Service says there could be record high tides along San Diego County beaches over the next three days.  The highest ever seen so far were 7-feet 8-inches in November of 2018.  An 8-foot high tide is possible this week.  Metrolink has cancelled passenger service between Oceanside and Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo through Friday due to the high tides potentially washing across the coastal rail tracks.  The high tides could cause further damage to Tamarack beach in Carlsbad and flooding in Del Mar and Imperial Beach.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/24/forecasters-say-tallest-high-tides-on-record-could-damage-san-diego-county-beaches/

Pala will have beautiful fall weather this week until a storm creeps in this weekend.  There could be rain as soon as Friday morning.  Rain likely by Saturday night.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Milwaukee Brewers have now won seven straight postseason games.  They swept the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and are now one game away from winning the World Series.  Most of those seven games were close.  But not last night’s as records fell.  The Brewers scored eight runs with two outs during a fifth inning rally.  That’s never been done before in a World Series game.  Starting pitcher Robert Gasser faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings.  That hasn’t been done in a World Series game since Sandy Koufax did it for the Dodgers in 1965.  Final score was 10-1.  The series could become a sweep tonight with that kind of momentum.  Game time is 5p on Fox, live from St. Petersburgh.

In the NFL – Last night at Philadelphia, The Dallas Cowboys beat the Eagles 38-21.  Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes and Javonte Williams ran for 155 yards.  Dallas scored first with a field goal early in the first quarter and never looked back.  Despite roughly equal time of possession, the Cowboys dominated almost every stat of the game.  Week 8 begins Thursday with Carolina at Green Bay.

The Seahawks have acquired Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson in a trade with the Colts.  Indianapolis will get two future draft picks.  Even though he’s been named to the Pro Bowl each of his eight seasons, he’s in the final season of his current contract and no extension has been negotiated.  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50298913/sources-seahawks-get-pro-bowl-guard-nelson-trade-colts

The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced yesterday that Jay-Z will be the featured performer at the upcoming Super Bowl at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on February 14.  Jay-Z has been an advisor and producer for NFL presentations including Super Bowl halftime since 2019.  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/50293241/jay-z-headline-super-bowl-lxi-half-show

In the NBA – Yesterday’s winners were Charlotte, Cleveland, Boston, Dallas, Milwaukee, Oklahoma City, Houston, Memphis and Golden State.

In the WNBA finals – The Golden State Valkyries are one game away from winning this year’s WNBA championship.  They beat the Atlanta Dream 64-55 last night in San Francisco.  Game 6 will be Thursday in Atlanta at 9:30a our time.

In the NHL – Just three games yesterday.  The Los Angeles Kings beat the Rangers in New York 6-2.  It was only their third win in ten games so far this season.   Calgary topped the visiting Maple Leafs 5-2.  And Detroit beat the Oilers 4-3 in a shootout in Edmonton.

In Major League Soccer – San Diego FC is at Vancouver tomorrow night.

In women’s soccer – The San Diego Wave had to settle for a tie in its final regular season home game of the season Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium.  Final score 2-2 against the Boston Legacy.  That leaves them in second place with a 17-8 and 4 record going into the final weekend of the regular season when they play Bay FC on the road.

The host team, the Pala Turtles took first place at last week’s chair volleyball tournament at Pala Events Center.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow was down a small fraction.  The S&P 500 gained a half percent.  And the Nasdaq was up 1.1%.  Gold futures gained $35.10 on the Comex, trading at $4,073.50 an ounce.  The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down $1.52 to $100.24 a barrel.

With gas prices down slightly, U.S. consumer confidence improved for the first time in four months.  The conference board today announced that its consumer confidence index rose 7.5 points to 91.7 this month.  September’s 84.2 was the lowest since April 2014.  It was below the lowest level reached during the pandemic.  Write-in responses to the board’s survey, which were collected the first three weeks of this month were still very pessimistic with frequent references to the high cost of energy, goods and services. Earlier this month, the Labor Department had reported that consumer inflation accelerated in September.  October numbers won’t be out until after Election Day. https://apnews.com/article/consumer-confidence-inflation-gasoline-tariffs-10aae13e93501c1c7f8803d44316eb28

General Motors will switch its common stock listing from the New York Stock Exchange to Nasdaq on November 17.  Shareholders don’t need to do anything.  The change is all behind the scenes. It’s an attempt by the auto maker to more align itself with other tech-focused companies.  The stock is coming off a 5-year high in August and is currently up about 1% year-to-date.  GM has been an NYSE-listed company since 1911.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/27/gm-nasdaq-nyse-stock-listing.html

An executive with Honda says the automotive industry is facing a “catastrophe” if the US and Canada don’t reach a new trade deal by the end of this year, when President Trump is threatening to double tariffs on Canadian vehicles and parts from 25% to 50%.  Senior vice president with American Honda Motor Co., Jennifer Thomas says she’s encouraged that trade talks have resumed between the two countries and says Mexico needs to be included in any new agreement in order for the U.S. auto industry to be competitive.  The U.S. already has new trade deals with Japan and South Korea that include 15% tariffs on vehicles.  Honda is the second-largest producer of vehicles in Canada behind Toyota.  Though it has major manufacturing north of the border, 60% of what Honda sells in the U.S. is made in the U.S.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/27/honda-warns-50percent-canada-auto-tariffs-would-be-catastrophic.html

Dollar General is being sued by the Federal Trade Commission and 20 states including California for deceptive pricing practices.  The Tennessee-based chain is accused of charging customers more than the prices on display shelves and in advertisements once they reach the register.  The lawsuit alleges that Dollar General failed to correct the situation, even though there was “extensive corporate knowledge of the problem.” https://apnews.com/article/federal-trade-commission-dollar-general-prices-1b572418c750c6abe491166fc1ba7480

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Prediction markets are pricing in a Democratic sweep of the U.S. House and Senate with one week until Election Day.  Odds are 2 to1 on Kalshi that Democrats win control of both houses of Congress.  Before September, the odds were even. There’s a 29% chance Democrats win the House and Republicans maintain control in the Senate.  And there’s a 10% chance Republicans sweep both chambers.  Polling, as opposed to the prediction market, favors the Democrats to gain a majority in the House of Representatives, while control of the Senate depends on a bunch of very competitive races in traditionally Republican-leaning states.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/10/27/2026-midterms-prediction-markets-democrats-congress.html

Cinepolis is closing one of its two Carlsbad theater locations.  The luxury cinema at La Costa Paseo Real with its cushy reclining leather seats, waiter service and a bar will close this Thursday when its lease expires.  Three other Cinepolis theaters in Del Mar, Vista, and at La Costa Town Square in Carlsbad will continue business as usual.  The closure leaves the luxury theater chain with nine locations in California. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/22/this-upscale-carlsbad-movie-theater-is-closing-on-oct-29/

Majority owners of the San Diego Wave women’s professional soccer team have proposed a massive remodel of the Del Mar Fairgrounds including a 12k to 16k-seat stadium.  The redevelopment would occur mainly on the huge existing parking lot and include a 125k-square foot convention center, a 300-room hotel, 125k square feet of retail space and a large parking garage on the north side of Jimmy Durante Boulevard.  The cost of the project was not disclosed.  Criticism of the plan on social media included lack of public transit compared to the Wave’s current home stadium in Mission Valley, increased traffic, and impact on the San Diego County Fair.  Local economists and development consultants are mostly against the idea for many of the same reasons, with some referring to better ideas already suggested towards developing the Fairgrounds. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/23/is-the-wave-proposal-for-del-mar-fairgrounds-a-good-fit/

Seven condors raised at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park have been released into the wild in northern California in collaboration with the Yurok Tribe and Redwood National and State Parks.  That makes a total of 200.  The California condor – the largest land bird in North America has recovered from fewer than two dozen in the wild in the early 1980s to over 600 today.  https://www.newsbreak.com/iheartradio-500239/4968713904792-seven-condors-released-into-the-wild-in-northern-california
