SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – It was probably the least exciting of this year’s five games, but after 54 years, the Milwaukee Brewers finally have their first World Series title. Their opponents, the Rays along with the Padres, Mariners and Rockies are now the only teams that have never won a World Series. Jacob Misiorowski pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, leaving a 4-0 game with muscle cramps in his calf. A rally by the Rays in the bottom of the 9th was too little, too late as Milwaukee won the game 4-1 and took the Series four games to one. The franchise originally joined the Majors in 1969 as the Seattle Sounders, the same year the Padres became a Major League team. After failing in their first year in Seattle, the franchise relocated to Milwaukee, who’d lost the Braves to Atlanta in 1966. In celebrating after last night’s win, many members of the team expressed regret that longtime radio announcer for the team, Bob Ueker didn’t live to see it. Mr. Baseball, as he’d been nicknamed by Johnny Carson, called Brewers games from 1971 through 2024 before passing in January of 2025 at the age of 90.
Padres starting pitcher Michael King has opted out of the final two years of his contract and will become a free agent. He was due $58m over the next two seasons and will receive a $5m buyout from the Padres. 31-year old King was a major part of the trade that sent Juan Soto to the Yankees in December of 2023. He has a 3.15 ERA over 432 innings pitched for San Diego. That ERA rose slightly in his 32 starts this past season coming back from an injury-plagued 2025. This will be his second straight year in free agency after testing the market last year and re-signing with the Padres for three years at $75m. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/10/29/padres-starter-michael-king-officially-becomes-a-free-agent/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down overall following disappointing reports from a few major companies, even though most individual stocks rose. The Dow and S&P 500 were each down a third of a percent. The Nasdaq fell 1.3%. Gold futures lost $23.40, trading on the Comex at $4,028.20 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were off $1.71 at $101.03 a barrel.
The biggest 3rd quarter report disappointment so far is Google parent company, Alphabet, which caused its stock to fall 12.3% today, putting it on track for its worst day since its stock began trading over 20 years ago. Alphabet had been under pressure to at least meet expectations amid growing concerns about the vast amount of money it’s spending on AI development. It’s a situation common throughout the AI industry. It’s possible the AI revolution may not produce as much profit and productivity as hoped. Future spending is also feeling pressure because of how expensive it’s become to borrow money to buy more chips. https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-ai-oil-fed-1b5c71d31b4ce1e46b0db47b33141f6b
Outlook reports this week from FedEx, Eli Lilly, Merck, Coca-Cola and Chipotle all exceeded expectations. https://www.cnbc.com/business/
Stock in DoorDash rose 4.2% after it said it has agreed to buy Instacart for $17b. DoorDash was another company that had just reported stronger profit and revenue than analysts expected. https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-ai-oil-fed-1b5c71d31b4ce1e46b0db47b33141f6b
The Federal Trade Commission yesterday ordered Delta Air Lines, Walmart, Target, United, JetBlue and other companies to provide detailed information on how they use consumer data in setting prices. The commission will also study how rideshare companies use independent drivers’ personal data to set compensation rates. Almost all of the companies named have in recent weeks denied using customers’ personal information to set prices. A preliminary report filed over a year and a half ago found grocers, clothing companies and others using third-party companies to individualiz online prices based on shopper location, browsing history and other factors, including how long items were left in virtual shopping carts. 30 states are considering pricing-related bills this year including measures addressing algorithmic and personalized pricing. https://apnews.com/article/prices-personal-data-walmart-doordash-delta-uber-19c634a5205557ebe0af99ec5c3a729a

Pittsburgh rock musician and singer Donnie Iris has died after a six-decade career. He first achieved fame with the group, The Jaggerz who had a #2 hit in 1970 with “The Rapper”, which was not a rap song. That kind of “rapping” came later in the decade. When The Jaggerz disbanded, he joined Wild Cherry two years after their big hit “Play That Funky Music” and played on their final album. In 1980, he released his first album as Donnie Iris and the Cruisers. The single “Ah! Leah! peaked at #29 on the Hot 100. In 2010, it was the first song ever played on Rez Radio 91.3. Iris released ten more albums between 1981 and 2010. He announced his official retirement from live performing earlier this month. He’d been battling bladder cancer for the past three years. Donnie Iris was 83. https://www.syracuse.com/entertainment/2026/10/beloved-rock-singer-dead-at-83-he-was-in-pain.html

Barrie had terminal cancer and incurable lung disease, which had been diagnosed a dozen years ago. Her performance as the mom in the 1979 movie “Breaking Away” earned her Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. She also appeared in “Private Benjamin”. Her television credits included the TV version of “Breaking Away”, “Barney Miller” and “Suddenly Susan”. Her Broadway credits include “Company” for which she received a Tony nomination, and “The Prisoner of Second Avenue”. LATE EXTRA: Actor, Patrick Stewart has died at the age of 86. He’d been suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.
The public comment period has ended for Cal OSHA’s emergency rulemaking to ban the cutting, grinding, fabrication and installation of artificial quartz slabs in California to protect workers from fatal lung disease. The final rule restricting engineered quartz containing more than 1% crystalline silica is now working its way through review. It’s modeled after a ban already in effect in Australia, enacted because of rising worker cases of silicosis. There are several safer alternatives to quartz countertops including granite, marble, quartzite and recycled glass, so quartz countertops won’t really be missed. And there’s no danger from existing engineered quartz countertops in homes and businesses. Like asbestos, it’s only dangerous if disturbed particles become airborne. https://www.kqed.org/news/12100477/california-regulators-unveil-plan-to-ban-new-quartz-countertops-amid-rising-worker-deaths
