LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Today is midterm Election Day.  That’s when all Representatives and one third of Senate seats come up for election, but not President or Vice-President.  There are just over 2m registered voters in San Diego County.  Ballots were mailed to each one about a month ago.  As of yesterday, 735k had already been returned.  Even without those who have or will vote today, turnout so far in San Diego County has been 37%.  In the last election for California governor, total turnout including Election Day was 54%.  Four years before that, it had been 66%.  Polls are open now through 8p.  There are over 200 Vote Centers in San Diego County.  For a list and map, go to www.SDVote.com.  Information for Riverside County residents is at www.VoteInfo.net .   Returns will begin being posted on those County Registrar websites later today.  (County News Center media release)

Too see if your ballot has been received and counted, and learn what to do if it hasn’t, go to the California Secretary of State’s website, www.California.Ballottrax.net .  Enter your first and last name, date of birth and ZIP code.  You’ll also need to prove you’re not a robot. Then, it’ll show you your current mail ballot status, whether it was mailed, when it was received, if it’s been counted, and if there are any issues that need to be fixed.  You can also sign up for text, phone or email alerts about the status of your ballot.  Most county registrars have similar programs.  If all else fails, the California Secretary of State’s voter hotline is 800 345 8683. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2026/10/27/has-my-2026-ballot-been-counted-how-to-check-and-what-to-do-if-theres-an-issue/

In a rebuke of the Trump administration’s efforts to force 20k California ballots to be separated from total returns for allegedly having been cast by non-citizens, the U.S. Supreme Court yesterday rejected the Justice Department’s appeal.   California leaders said the list of individuals was full of errors and charged that the President was trying to interfere and fix a system that wasn’t broken.  www.NYTimes.com

Nationwide, today’s election will determine which party controls Congress through President Trump’s final two years in office.  A Republican majority in both houses has shown little resistance to policies and orders from the White House.  But the majority is slim and general public dissatisfaction with what’s happened in the past two years is strong.  The party in the White House tends to lose Congressional seats in midterm elections.  Republicans currently control the House of Representatives by a 218-214 margin, and the Senate 53-47.  Polls suggest Democrats might flip the House.  With 35 seats up for election, the Senate could go either way.  www.morningbrew.com

American flags are once again flying around the perimeter fence of the Temecula Duck Pond.  It’s not for Election Day.  It’s going on now through Veterans Day to honor the service and sacrifice of the military community.  The Flags of Honor program is administered by the city.  The fee to sponsor a flag is $30.  Each flag includes a personalized dedication card.  The flag and card go to the sponsor at the end of the program, November 16.  Details are at the city’s website, www.TemeculaCA.gov . https://patch.com/california/temecula/temeculas-veterans-honored-flags-honor-return-duckpond

Pala and all of Southern California will have perfect weather for Election Day.  It’ll warm up into the upper 80s this weekend.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Disney is planning to lay off several thousand employees.  Some managers have been asked to reduce costs in their departments by 20%.  This is the third round of layoffs since Josh D’Amaro took over as CEO earlier this year.  Disney’s fiscal fourth-quarter earnings will be released in two weeks.

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Carlsbad Premium Outlets just off I-5 at Palomar Airport Road is one of two malls in the county that are going through extensive tenant changes right now.  Within the next two months, Aerie will open a store there, selling clothing in wide range of body types and sizes, about which their motto is keeping it real.  Already open are Aerie’s parent brand, American Eagle, selling men’s and women’s jeans, clothing and accessories.  Bath & Body Works, and Columbia Factory Store, featuring outdoor clothing and gear are also new tenants at Carlsbad. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/11/02/two-san-diego-regional-malls-are-updating-their-store-roster-heres-whats-coming/

According to insurer Neptune Flood, who obviously have an interest in selling flood insurance, almost 9,500 properties in San Diego County are at risk of flooding over the next 30 years, whether from heavy rainfall, coastal overflow from storm surges, high tides, or sea-level rise.  What most homeowners and businesses don’t realize is that flooding is not covered by most insurance policies.  With El Niño expected to strongly affect flooding potential this winter, many people may not realize the flooding risk.  Homes with federally-backed mortgages and in areas designated by FEMA as high flood risk are required to have flood insurance.  For everyone else it’s optional.  On FEMA’s flood zone map, shaded areas starting with A or V are high risk.  But even low risk doesn’t mean no risk.  30% of all flood claims happen in low-risk areas.  There are both public and private flood insurance options.  All of them cover buildings and contents.  The caps are lower on FEMA-managed public plans.  Prices for private policies are generally a little less expensive.  But private plans are not guaranteed.  And there is usually at least a 30-day waiting period before a policy takes effect.  So, don’t expect coverage if you sign up right before a storm. https://msc.fema.gov/portal/search?AddressQuery=san%20diego
