Today, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down a tenth of a percent. The S&P 500 gained a half percent. And the Nasdaq was up 1.1%. Today’s jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the U.S. economy added an unexpectedly high 165k jobs in October. Unemployment fell a tenth to 4.1%. Jobs growth in the previous two months were upwardly revised to 186k in August and 60k in September – a net gain for both of 84k. Analysts say that proves there is little chance of an economic slowdown. Unemployment has been at or below 4 ½% for a record 60 straight months. https://www.cnn.com/2026/11/06/economy/us-jobs-report-october
Tesla will wind down production of its Cybertruck by the middle of next year to free up production capacity for its two-seat Cybercab. The Cybertruck is produced exclusively at Tesla’s Texas plant alongside the Model Y and Cybercab. CEO Elon Musk hasn’t officially said whether Cybertruck production will move to a different facility or will cease completely. The polarizing design and equally polarizing opinions about Musk prevented the Cybertruck from ever achieving the quarter million units per year Musk originally predicted. According to Cox Automotive, Tesla sold just over 20k Cybertrucks in the U.S. last year – down from the 39k the year before. The 2024 model was subject to 11 voluntary recalls. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/06/tesla-cybertruck-texas-musk.html
Wendy’s yesterday rejected the $1.4b takeover offer from investors led by Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management. The struggling fast food chain said the offer does not reflect potential gains from their turnaround strategy, which has yet to pay off as same-store sales declined again in the third quarter. However, the third quarter did beat Wall Street earnings and revenue expectations. On Wednesday, Wendy’s adopted a shareholder rights plan, known as a poison pill that will last one year. A poison pill automatically allows existing stockholders to buy additional shares at a discount if any one new investor buys more than a certain percentage of the company, thus diluting the acquirer’s position. Peltz has been after Wendy’s for decades, serving on its board for 17 years and even owning it in combination with Arby’s for a while. Other restaurant chains have been the target of similar takeover threats recently. Applebee’s parent company, Dine Brands recently adopted a poison pill. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/11/05/wendys-rejects-takeover-proposal.html

The Coastal Commission has approved more rock and sand and the construction of a sea wall to protect the coastal rail line from beach erosion in San Clemente. Most of the riprap has already been installed along the seaward side of the railroad tracks as part of emergency repairs made without permits. The approval allows the boulders to be rearranged and extended. Also in the plans are the placement of 690k cubic yards of sand. That about twice the amount of sediment removed annually from the Oceanside Harbor channel. The focus is on two areas – one just north of San Clemente Pier, and the other is south of the pier at Cypress Shore and San Clemente State Beach. Yesterday’s agreement also calls for regular reports on the status of the shoreline and a study about the possible eventual relocation of the seven miles of beach front rail line used by Amtrak, Metrolink and BNSF freight trains. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/11/05/coastal-commission-approves-more-sand-and-rock-to-protect-san-diegos-coastal-rail-corridor/
On this day in music history – November 6,
- 1961, Jimmy Dean … that’s right, the sausage guy … began the first of five weeks at #1 with “Big Bad John”. He later went on to host a TV variety show and appear in various movies including the James Bond feature “Diamonds are Forever”.
- In 1965, the Rolling Stones got their second #1 hit with “Get Off of My Cloud”. It replaced The Beatles’ “Yesterday” at #1.
- In 1967, Bob Dylan recorded “All Along the Watchtower” during a three-hour session in Nashville. Jimi Hendrix recorded his version 2 ½ months later.
- In 1968, The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane played the opening night of San Francisco’s “Fillmore West”.
- On the same day, The Monkees’ feature film “Head” opened in New York City. Instead of catering to its core teeny-bopper audience, the film had a dark theme about manipulation of the group and quick cuts of Vietnam war atrocities that didn’t match the group’s image. Reviews were harsh and what had been hoped would be the American equivalent of “A Hard Day’s Night” turned into a box office bomb.
- In 1970, Aerosmith played their first gig ever at a high school in Mendon, Massachusetts.
- In 1971, Cher began a two-week run at #1 with “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” – her first #1 hit without Sonny.
- In 1976, the Steve Miller Band was at #1 with “Rock ‘n’ Me”.
- In 1982, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes were at #1 for three weeks with “Up Where We Belong”, from the soundtrack to the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman”.
- In 2000, Madonna did her first concert in eight years with a 20 minute set at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.
- Exactly five years later, she scored her 36th top ten single with “Hung Up”. That equaled the record held by Elvis Presley for most top ten singles. It was also her 47th top 40 single – the most by any female artist at that time.
- In 2014, Taylor Swift’s album “1989” debuted at #1 and sold 1.3m copies the first week – the most of anyone since Eminem twelve years earlier. Swift is the only act to have three separate million download weeks.
- In 2019, cellist Hugh McDowell died of cancer at age 65. He’d become part of the original live performance lineup of ELO when he was 19.
Born on this day …
- In 1942, Doug Sahm, leader of the Sir Douglas Quintet.
- In 1948, Glenn Frey from the Eagles.
- In 1964, Corey Glover, lead singer with Living Colour.
