There were a pair of accidents and a vegetation fire along Highway 76 between Via Monserate and Gird Road Saturday. The road was closed from South Mission to Gird for about an hour. The fire was first reported around 8:25p in multiple spots along 76 and burned less than an acre total before being brought under control by 9p. What started as a routine traffic stop in Temecula on Saturday ended with a major weapons seizure. California Highway Patrol officers say they spotted signs of impairment, arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI, then found several rifles, other weapons, and high-capacity magazines during a standard vehicle inventory. Photos posted online show the seized items laid out on a table. The unidentified driver was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. A hot air balloon with 13 passengers made an emergency landing in a Temecula back yard Saturday morning when the wind died and the balloon’s fuel ran low. A contract has been awarded to complete repairs to the burnt-out end of Oceanside Pier. Noble Consultants of Irvine got the $516k contract. The 103rd season of the Ramona Pageant – California’s official outdoor play kicked off Saturday at Ramona Bowl in Hemet. It’ll continue for two more weekends. www.ramonabowl.com

SPORTS
In the NBA – in round one of the playoffs, Saturday’s Game One winners were Cleveland, Denver, New York and the Lakers. Yesterday’s winners were Boston, Oklahoma City, Orlando and San Antonio. Game 2 today for Toronto at Cleveland at 4p, Atlanta at New York at 5p, and Minnesota at Denver at 7:30p. All games on Peacock. The last two will also be on NBC.
In the NHL – The playoffs began Saturday with Carolina, Minnesota and Philadelphia winning the first games of their Round One series. Yesterday’s winners were Colorado, Montreal, Buffalo and Vegas. Game Two today for Philadelphia at Pittsburgh, Ottawa at Carolina, and Minnesota at Dallas. Anaheim opens its series at Edmonton. All games on ESPN.
In the minors – The San Diego Gulls lost 4-1 at Ontario Friday, then finished the regular season with another 6-4 loss Saturday at Coachella Valley.
In Major League Baseball – The Padres swept the Angels this weekend in Anaheim, winning 8-0 Friday, 4-1 Saturday, and 2-1 yesterday. The Dodgers lost two out of three in Denver. That moves San Diego to within a half game of first-place Los Angeles with a record that would put them in first place in any of the other five divisions … 15 wins against 7 losses. The Padres are off today. The Dodgers play one more game in Denver and the Angels host Toronto.
Former Padre and current Cleveland Guardians catcher Austin Hedges hit the first run of yesterday’s 8-4 win over the Orioles. But his biggest moment yesterday was proposing to his girlfriend on the field after the game. In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost the final two games of its road trip to Stockton. The Ports took four out of the six games. The Storm host Visalia for the first of six games beginning tomorrow.
In the NFL –
In Major League Soccer – San Diego FC lost 4-2 at Real Salt Lake and the Galaxy tied 2-all at Dallas Saturday. LAFC lost 4-1 to San Jose yesterday at BMO Stadium. This Wednesday, the Galaxy are at Columbus, San Diego FC is at Houston, and LAFC hosts Colorado.
In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals beat Las Vegas 14-12 Friday at Pechanga Arena.
In golf – At the RBC Heritage Tournament at Hilton Head, South Carolina, Matt Fitzpatrick won in sudden death over Scottie Scheffler. Both finished the regulation four rounds at 18 under par 266. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard
In racing – Tyler Reddick started in the pole position for the fourth time this season. He regained the lead on the final lap and won the NASCAR Cup race at Kansas City yesterday. It was his fifth win of the young racing season. Alex Palou won yesterday’s Grand Prix of Long Beach. It was his 22nd win, but first ever in Long Beach.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down as the end of the Iran cease-fire approaches. The Dow fell a tenth of a percent. The S&P 500 down a third of a percent. And the Nasdaq fell by a half percent. Comex gold traded down $51.50 at $4,828.10 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up $5.50 to $89.35 a barrel after the newly re-opened Strait of Hormuz now appears to not be so re-opened.
Iran is becoming a very confusing situation with the U.S. saying it wants to resume peace talks, but seizing an Iranian flagged cargo ship after issuing multiple orders over a period of six hours for it to stop. On Saturday, India reported that Iran fired on two it its merchant ships in the Strait after letting other ships through. Result … many shipping companies are now reluctant to resume operations. FBI director Kash Patel has filed a $250m defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic after the magazine published a report alleging excessive drinking and absences from work. It also claimed the 46-year old director had panicked when he was temporarily locked out of his work email account, believing he’d been fired, and that he targeted political or personal adversaries within the bureau. Patel has fired FBI employees involved in investigations into President Trump. Just as EV maker Rivian was preparing a crucial rollout of its new R2 model, a tornado damaged part of its central Illinois plant over the weekend. The affected area was being used for parts storage and logistics for the model. Jersey Mike’s subway sandwich chain has filed for an Initial Public Offering. A little over a year ago, Blackstone bought a majority stake, valuing Jersey Mike’s at $8b. Over the weekend at the movies, the top two films remained the same for the third week. “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” sold another $35m worth of tickets. “Project Hail Mary” was again in second place with $20.5m in sales. “Lee Cronin’s The Mummy” opened in third place with $13.1m on 1k fewer screens than the others. “Normal” debuted in 7th place with $2.6m on 2k screens. That’s half as many as Mario. “BTS World Tour ‘Arirang” in Japan: Live Viewing” event was 8th with $1.8m on 1,200 screens. Another Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is in the history books. Weekend 2 wrapped up yesterday. During Justin Bieber’s set Saturday, surprises, which are a staple at Coachella included the addition of Billie Eilish, Big Sean, Sexyy Red, and Dijon. Olivia Rodrigo joined Addison Rae, and Billy Idol and Steve Stevens jumped onstage for Sombr’s version of “Eyes Without a Face”. While all the infrastructure is still in place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, organizers will hold the annual country music-themed Stagecoach Festival this coming weekend. Headliners for the three nights are Cody Johnson on Friday, Lainey Wilson on Saturday, and Post Malone on Sunday. - 1957, Elvis Presley began the first of eight weeks at #1 with “All Shook Up” – the biggest-selling single of that year at 2m copies.
- In 1959, Goldband Records released “Puppy Love”, a song recorded two years earlier by 11-year old Dolly Parton. It didn’t chart, but did later become a hit in the 1970s for Donny Osmond.
- In 1968, The Beatles’ new company, Apple Music began running ads soliciting tapes from unknown artists and offering financial grants to artists who agreed to release records on the Apple label. Artists including Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax and Elephant’s Memory signed up.
- On the same day, Deep Purple made their live debut in Denmark. Ritchie Blackmore had suggested the new name for the group formerly known as Roundabout.
- In 1969, Benny Benjamin, drummer for the Motown house band, The Funk Brothers died. He and the group played on hundreds of songs by the Four Tops, Temptations, Supremes, Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and others.
- In 1980, 84-year old actor/comedian George Burns became the oldest person to have a hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “I Wish I Was 18 Again”. His most recent charting recording before that had been a spoken word comedy routine with wife, Gracie Allen in 1933.
- In 1981, John Phillips from The Mamas & The Papas was jailed for five years after pleading guilty to drug possession. The sentence was suspended after 30 days.
- In 1985, the charity recording “We Are the World” hit #1.
- In 1991, Steve Marriott, leader of Small Faces and Humble Pie died in a fire at his home in England. Peter Frampton, Midge Ure, Chris Farlow and Humble Pie gave a memorial concert for Marriott exactly 20 years later in 2001.
- In 2002, surviving members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl and Krist Novaselic went to court over who owned the rights to the group’s recordings, claiming Kurt Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love was mentally unstable and that she was “stoned” when contracts were signed.
