They’re calling for a 12-game schedule over 14 weeks beginning in what is currently Week Zero and ending the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The 2026 season will begin with eight Week Zero games on August 29. https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-football-schedule-e87f66392b34c8a78478260b78b5edf8

As many predicted from the start, LIV golf is now living on life support. The high-dollar challenger to the PGA that boasted of unlimited cash and lured away major players with extravagant salaries appears to be winding down. Though CEO Scott O’Neil emailed staff this week that the 2026 season will continue as planned including this weekend’s event in Mexico, he did not address media reports that Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will pull funding after spending (some say wasting) $5b on the venture over the past five years. Turns out, television ratings have been too small and the PGA too-entrenched to be beaten. https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/48495822/liv-golf-going-days-seem-numbered-pif-funding

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were soaring on news that Iran had reopened the Strait of Hormuz. The Dow gained 2 1/3%. The S&P 500 was up 1 ½%. The Nasdaq rose 1 ¾%. Gold shot up $82 on the Comex, trading at $4,890.30 an ounce. Oil futures plunged, with West Texas Intermediate Crude down $11.60 to $83.09 a barrel.
Iran’s foreign minister today declared the vital shipping corridor, the Strait of Hormuz open to all commercial ships during the 10-day ceasefire announced yesterday afternoon between Israel and Lebannon. President Trump thanked Tehran for the move, but said the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would continue. Iranian Tasnim News, which is affiliated with the country’s Revolutionary Guard is reporting that there has been a limited reopening of the Strait and that ships must coordinate passage with Iranian forces, but that ships with cargoes linked to hostile nations will be denied passage and that the Strait will once again close if the U.S. blockade continues.
QVC Group, which also owns the Home Shopping Network filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy today. The long-running TV shopping channels have struggled to adapt as consumers shift to livestreams on TikTok and online marketplaces like Shein. QVC says it has more than $1b in cash on hand and that it has ample liquidity to meet all business obligations and that all of its brands in this country and abroad are operating as normal. QVC Group’s sales declined almost 30% from 2020 to 2024. Its shares traded at over $900 a decade ago. They were less than $3 this week. https://apnews.com/article/qvc-bankruptcy-tiktok-shein-13650e6d52cd6007201d0132c2b95c9c
President Trump yesterday nominated Erica Schwartz to be the new director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She’d been deputy surgeon general during the first Trump administration. She spent 20 years in uniform, including as rear admiral and chief medical officer of the Coast Guard. The most recent CDC director, Dr. Susan Monarez was fired seven months ago. It’s unclear how Schwartz’ views on vaccines and other key public health policies compare with Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr.’s. Schwartz’ nomination still needs Senate confirmation. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/16/trump-nominates-erica-schwartz-as-cdc-director.html
Meanwhile, Trump again this week threatened to fire Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, whose term will expire next month anyway. He also vowed to continue a criminal investigation of the central bank, which would complicate the path of installing a replacement for Powell, who has promised to stay on the job until a successor is confirmed. It’s been unclear if the President has the power to remove the Fed chairman, absent of serious wrongdoing. A federal judge last month shot down White House allegations about cost overruns in the renovations of Federal Reserve headquarters. The judge said it was just a pretext to intimidate the central bank. https://www.npr.org/2026/04/15/nx-s1-5786478/trump-federa-reserve-jerome-powell

Associated Press is reporting that some of the 12k new officers and agents hired by ICE in an unprecedented hiring spree began work before passing background checks, and that some were “less than ideal” candidates who would have been passed over in a normal hiring cycle. Some had a history of unpaid debts resulting in legal action, two had filed for bankruptcy, three others faced lawsuits of alleged misconduct in previous law enforcement jobs.
