Meanwhile, the President’s nominee to succeed Fed chairman Jerome Powell, Kevin Warsh was approved by the Senate Banking Committee today on a 13-11 vote with members voting the straight party line. Pizza Hut sales fell 4% domestically, but rose 2% internationally. Analysts had expected a slight decline internationally. For the second time in a year, Oakland’s airport is changing its name. The Port of Oakland, operators of the airport, changed the name from Oakland International Airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, thinking the more-inclusive name would attract more traffic. But San Francisco sued, alleging trademark infringement of its San Francisco International Airport name. The two sides reached an agreement yesterday that the airport will now be named Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport and retain its current International Air Transport Association code, OAK. The Port is prevented from using San Francisco first or using International in any combination with San Francisco, and must exclude keywords referring only to San Francisco in its advertising. The Port is responsible for ensuring that airlines, regulators, and vendors use the proper name in referring to the east bayside airport. https://www.sf.gov/news-san-francisco-and-port-of-oakland-reach-settlement-in-airport-renaming-lawsuit

Singer, Taylor Swift has filed three unique trademark applications in a move to protect her voice and image from unauthorized AI deepfakes. Swift is trademarking two audio clips in which she speaks her name, plus an image of her onstage in a sequined outfit with a pink guitar. The theory is that established trademarks give an artist more legal standing when going after an AI creator using a similar voice or image. Copyright doesn’t apply in such cases since AI creations can be made without lifting a voice or image from a copyrighted song or video. The theory has yet to be tested in court. Actor Matt McConaughey had also recently filed for this new type of spoken-word trademark. www.morningbrew.com
Democrats in Congress are investigating the Trump administration spending nearly $2b to get energy companies to walk away from wind projects in the ocean off U.S. shores. Trump ordered a temporary halt to leasing and permitting of wind projects when he returned to office in January 2025. One of the three deals Trump recently arranged after federal courts stuck down his earlier executive order gave French company, TotalEnergies $1b. That’s essentially a refund for its wind leases off the coasts of North Carolina and New York in exchange for which the company must invest the money in fossil fuel projects instead. Two more deals with the same terms were announced Monday with Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind. That leaves just one remaining U.S. offshore wind project off the coast of Massachusetts. Rep. Jared Huffman, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources Committee and Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee are leading the investigation. Opponents of offshore wind projects call the administration’s actions creative. Huffman calls it a “scam.” The National Wildlife Federation says it puts the U.S. further behind in efforts to curb climate change. https://apnews.com/article/trump-offshore-wind-payouts-democrats-investigation-climate-3cf2dd4eb0cc9cc5442e204583057453
