BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were once again mixed with tech stocks showing investor concern over AI investment levels.  The Dow gained 1.2%.  The S&P 500 was up a third of a percent.  But the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell a tenth.  Comex gold was down $33.30 to $4,043.70 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures plunged another $4.41 to $78.20.  That’s down more than 10% in two trading sessions.

About a year after an attempted rebrand and the resulting logo-change backlash, the CEO of Cracker Barrel announced yesterday that she will step down.  Julie Masino will remain in an advisory capacity until October 9.  David Deno, the former CEO of Bloomin’ Brands will succeed Masino next month.  Bloomin’ Brands, which owns Outback Steakhouse and other brands was run by Deno from 2019 until his retirement in 2024.  He also has executive experience at Best Buy and Yum Brands, which is the parent company of KFC and Taco Bell.  Masino had similar previous experience and was hired with hopes she would innovate to attract new customers to Cracker Barrel.  But existing customers rebelled against changes in restaurant décor and especially, the loss of the “Uncle Herschel” character in the company logo last August.  The changes were quickly reversed.  But the damage was done with same-store restaurant sales plunging 5% last fall and 7% in the following quarter.  Sales in the attached retail stores dropped even worse.  Masino’s resignation was surprising given that much of the decline had begun to reverse. https://apnews.com/article/cracker-barrel-ceo-logo-masino-9a6f052d1d5105e5f5f593f54aa517d2

The company plans to eliminate roughly 2,600 positions, mostly in its technology and product operations.  AI will take over some of the work.  Visa had about 34,100 employees at the end of the last fiscal year. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/28/visa-is-cutting-7percent-of-employees-in-efficiency-push-as-ai-reshapes-work.html

On this day in music history – July 28,

  • In 1956, Gene Vincent made his first national TV appearance on The Perry Como Show to promote his latest single, “Woman Love”.  But it was the single’s B-side that ended up making the top ten.  A demo of it made its way to Capitol Records as part of an Elvis sound-alike contest.  That’s how the re-recorded version of “Bee-bop-a-lula” became Gene Vincent’s first hit single.
  • In 1960, Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely” entered the charts, peaking at #2 in the U.S. The song had been turned down by The Everly Brothers and Elvis.
  • In 1966, Chris Farlow and the Thunderbirds hit #1 in the UK with their version of The Rolling Stones song “Out of Time” from the Stones’ “Aftermath” album.  Farlow’s single didn’t even crack the Hot 100 in the U.S.
  • In 1969, police in Moscow were dealing with thousands of cases of public phone vandalism after an article in a Russian youth magazine showed kids how to use phone parts to convert acoustic guitars to electric.
  • In 1973, over 600k people attended the Watkins Glen outdoor summer jam headlined by The Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead.  The racetrack in New York state was the originally selected site for Woodstock four years earlier until operators decided they didn’t want a rock music festival at their venue.  A lot changed in four years.
  • In 1992, Rapper Ice T announced that his label, Warner Brothers would pull the controversial song “Cop Killer” from all future copies of the “Body Count” album.  Protests by law enforcement groups said it encouraged the killing of police.  Ice T said he would instead give away copies of Cop Killer at his concerts.  Ironically, he later joined the cast of the NBC police drama, “Law and Order”.
  • In 2008, Amy Winehouse was rushed to a hospital after apparently suffering a reaction to medication she was taking to help her off hard drugs.
  • In 2011, singer Meat Loaf passed out onstage from an asthma attack.  After taking about ten minutes off, he regained his composure and finished the show.
  • In 2014, Linda Ronstadt was honored with a National Medal of Arts at the White House.  She had missed her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three months earlier – the result of Parkinson’s disease limiting her ability to travel.

Born on this day …

  • In 1938, George Cummings, steel guitar player for Dr. Hook
  • In 1943, guitarist Mike Bloomfield, who was a member of the Paul Butterfield band and Electric Flag as well as playing on Bob Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” album.  Bloomfield died of a heroin overdose in 1981.
