If you missed the San Diego County Fair, the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa opens today. It runs now through August 16.
Yesterday’s clouds over the San Diego County mountains meant business. While the rest of us stayed dry – except for the humidity – Warner Springs got 2 tenths of an inch of rain, Santa Ysabel had just over a third of an inch, Julian had over 8 tenths of an inch, and Lake Cuyamaca had a little under a half inch. Nothing measurable on Palomar Mountain. https://www.weather.gov/source/sgx/hydro/LAXRRMSAN
Pala will have night and morning low clouds and fog and partly to mostly sunny days with highs right around 90 until the middle of next week. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Barring a lockout should collective bargaining negotiations stall, the league announced today that the 2027 baseball season is set to begin March 24. There will be a single game that day, with teams not yet chosen to be televised on Netflix. The rest of the league will begin play the following day. There also might be several international games before Opening Day. But they haven’t been scheduled and none of this will actually happen if predictions come true for protracted negotiations on the new contract between the Players’ Union and MLB. The current one expires December 1. In 2022, an agreement wasn’t reached until March 10, causing Opening Day to be pushed back a week until April 7. Next year’s All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Athletics are expected to play most of their home games in West Sacramento for the third straight year before their new stadium in Las Vegas is ready. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49378324/mlb-set-earliest-opening-day-2027-there-season

The manager of the U.S. men’s national team, Mauricio Pochettino says he will make a decision next week about whether to sign a contract extension through the 2030 World Cup. U.S. Soccer wants the 54-year old back in spite of the team’s poor showing against Belgium in the round of 16. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/49382484/mauricio-pochettino-make-decision-usmnt-future-next-week

In the NBA – Making his first public appearance since he informed the Los Angeles Lakers he would be leaving to join another team via free agency, LeBron James did not reveal his decision at a live taping of his podcast yesterday at Fanatics Fest, the annual sports lifestyle festival. That, in spite of the podcast host and crowd doing their best to pry it out of him. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/49378298/lebron-james-not-ready-reveal-next-team-fun
In the WNBA – In yesterday’s only game, Portland beat Washington 75-56. Tonight, Seattle at Indiana, Atlanta at Toronto, Connecticut at Phoenix, and Los Angeles at Chicago.

New this weekend at the movies, one of the most unique productions in recent memory. According to the New York Times’ A.O. Scott, “The Odyssey” is director Christopher Nolan’s almost three-hour adaptation of Homer’s 2,800-year-old, 12k-line epic poem. That alone makes it nostalgic in an era where the basic concept of movies is becoming nostalgic, as are the ways we watch them. In other words, they don’t make ‘em like they used to, and we don’t see ‘em like we used to … in theaters. The Odyssey is a groundbreaking tribute to a durable and beloved work of literature that hopes to reverse that trend with technology you’d have difficulty duplicating in a home theater. It’s the first feature shot entirely in the IMAX format at a cost of over $250m. Technically new, but also a throwback to the sword and sandal epics of the 1950s and early 60’s when movies were competing with everybody’s new toy, television through the latest technology at that time – Cinemascope and other super wide-screen formats. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Zendaya with Matt Damon as the main character, Odysseus, the King of Ithaca. www.NYTimes.com

California-based Taylor Farms is preparing a recall for iceberg lettuce linked to a severe multi-state cyclosporiasis outbreak. The parasite causes extreme diarrhea and cramps. The outbreak has been tied to shredded lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants in five mid-Western states. There have been over 5k cases in Michigan alone. Taco Bell has stopped using the contaminated lettuce. Federal agencies are managing the investigation and coordinating the scope and specifics of the Taylor Farms recall. McDonald’s came under scrutiny for the same contamination in 2018. At least one victim of the latest outbreak has filed suit against Taco Bell parent company Yum Brands, franchise operator Charter Foods and lettuce supplier Taylor Farms. https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/wendys-chipotle-say-they-are-not-affected-by-cyclosporiasis-outbreak-2026-07-17/
