SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – Yesterday at the annual Home Run Derby in Philadelphia, St. Louis outfielder Jordan Walker topped hometown favorite Kyle Schwarber in the final round 12 homers to 11.  For that, he won $1m, which is more than his entire 2026 salary of just under $800k.  Walker hit a total of 31 runs in his 50 swings over three rounds.  The 24-year old says he hopes his win inspires more Black kids to follow in his footsteps into baseball.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49358712/jordan-walker-hopes-home-run-derby-win-inspires-black-kids

The A’s entered the All-Star Break riding a nine-game losing streak.  Their solution was to fire pitching coach Scott Emerson.  Their team ERA of 5.21 is the second-highest in the Majors.  Only the Rockies are worse at 5.44.  Bullpen coach Dan Hubbs will serve as interim pitching coach for the rest of this season. https://apnews.com/article/athletics-pitching-coach-scott-emerson-bab2a75fda59ab00efe622556ec327ee

The All-Star Game is this afternoon at 5p on Fox.

It’s not all fun and games in Philly this week.  MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and players’ union interim director Bruce Meyer are at odds over the league salary cap.  Meyer calls a salary cap the ultimate excuse not to compete.  Acrimonious ads show how contentious the issue is with labor negotiations expected to extend into next season.  The current collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1.  Signs point to a lockout before the 2027 season begins.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49358929/mlbpa-head-criticizes-mlb-salary-cap-ad-campaign-perverse

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm are off for the All-Star Break and open a 3-game series at Ontario Friday.

In the NFL – Rams left tackle Alaric Jackson will not face felony charges for his domestic violence arrest in June.  The L.A. City Attorney’s Office says the case has been assigned for a pre-filing diversion.  But the case will remain open throughout the statute of limitations and can be reevaluated if there are further developments. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/49351981/rams-alaric-jackson-face-felony-charge-june-arrest

In the WNBA – Atlanta topped the visiting LA Sparks 101-92.  And Minnesota beat Phoenix 104-100.  Just one game tonight – Washington at Toronto.

In the NHL – San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini is making video game history.  The 20-year old will be on the cover of both the Standard and Deluxe Edition of “NHL 27” when the games are released later this year.  That makes him the youngest player ever to be featured on the NHL game series.  Trevor Zegras was 21 when he appeared on NHL 23 as a member of the Anaheim Ducks. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/49358795/sharks-macklin-celebrini-ea-sports-nhl-27-cover

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow fell a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up four tenths.  And the Nasdaq gained a full percent.  Gold bounced back $60.60 on the Comex to $4,066.30 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up another 89 cents to $79.03 a barrel.

Inflation fell more than expected in June thanks to falling fuel costs.  Prices dropped 0.4% from May to June, the largest monthly drop in four years.  Annual inflation fell to 3.5%, down from 4.2% in May.   Yet, here in July, with oil prices up for a second day as the U.S. renewed attacks on Iran and imposed a new blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, Fed chairman Kevin Warsh is cautioning against undue optimism.  Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, core prices remained the same and is still more than a half point above the Fed’s target of 2%.  https://apnews.com/article/inflation-trump-food-prices-gas-53d221aa918c466172af494ba7debc00

Budget carrier, Frontier Airlines will debut Starlink satellite internet service early next year.  It’s the latest win for the SpaceX division that has also signed deals with United and American Airlines.  Frontier does not currently have in-flight WiFi and are one of the last holdouts to adding it.  The company has not said if it will charge extra for the service.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/14/frontier-airlines-wifi-spacex-starlink.html

United Airlines latest upsell will be to charge more to customers who want to keep the middle seat open on its long-range narrow-body Airbus planes.  It’s a common practice in Europe where it’s an upsell in short-haul business class.  The seats, which are in the extra legroom section, go on sale later this year. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/14/united-airlines-for-empty-middle-seat-is-new-upsell.html

A Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton has sold at Sotheby’s auction for a record $50.1m.  Hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin had paid $44.6m for a Stegosaurus named Apex two years ago.  The T-rex, named Gus, is about 61% complete, making it one of the most complete dinosaur specimens ever found.  Gus was discovered in South Dakota and is about 67m years old.  Dinosaur fossils are one of the fastest-growing segments of the collectables market.  Paleontologists and other experts warn that there are few safeguards for authenticity or verification. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/14/trex-fossil-auction-sothebys.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has ordered ICE to temporarily cease most vehicle stops after agents fatally shot a man in Houston last Thursday, and another in coastal Maine yesterday.  Both were in their vehicles.  Stops will continue on targets deemed to be dangerous.  Multiple sources say the pause is to give ICE officers new training on vehicle stops. https://abcnews.com/US/ice-temporarily-stop-conducting-vehicle-stops-sources/story?id=134751678

Vivani Medical is developing what it believes is the solution to the biggest drawback in GLP-1 weight loss drugs – keeping patients on-treatment to maintain their weight loss.  The company is in the early stages of developing an experimental implant of the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s obesity injection Wegovy and diabetes counterpart Ozempic.  Due to costs, injection fatigue, side effects and social stigma, half or more of patients stop GLP-1s within a year at the risk of regaining the weight they lost.  Vivani envisions the implant as a maintenance treatment rather than an initial GLP-1 therapy.  Availability is still several years away.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/11/glp-1-implant-from-vivani-medical-aims-to-help-patients-stay-on-treatment.html

Electric vehicle battery recycling has a problem.  There’s no money in it.  In spite of the valuable minerals in EV batteries including nickel, cobalt, manganese and lithium, salvage yards are just grateful if they can get recyclers to take them at no cost.  But that’s a dangerous situation.  If used EV batteries have no intrinsic worth at any stage in their recycling, they likely to be treated like trash.  Containing what they do, that makes them toxic waste, which can lead to leaching into the soil or water, or becoming airborne in case of fire.  It also squanders minerals that could be reused.  Carmakers are optimistic that capitalism will make recycling of EV batteries work.  GM says recycling the scrap that comes off its own battery manufacturing lines is now “a source of revenue”.  The cost of shipping cuts into that since batteries and their components weight so much.  But better logistics can help that.  It’s salvage yards which don’t have those economies of scale that are the problem.  At salvage auction, EVs are an unknown.  An EV’s battery could have years of life left and be worth reselling, or it could be dead weight.  The state of Colorado is putting the burden of recycling unwanted EV batteries on the companies that sold them in the first place.  A law passed this summer is an extension of the state’s philosophy known as “producer responsibility.”  If an EV battery is dumped at a landfill or stranded in a salvage yard in Colorado, it’s up to the original manufacturer, like Tesla or GM to pick it up and make sure it’s recycled at their expense. https://www.npr.org/2026/07/13/nx-s1-5847025/ev-battery-recycling-economics
