As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up, gaining back some of the past couple of days’ losses as this year’s biggest rally loses steam.  The Dow gained 3 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 rose 6 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was up 8 tenths.  Gold gained back $56.70 on the Comex, trading $4,140.10 an ounce.  The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.48 to $72.02 a barrel.

The International Monetary Fund expects the world economy to grow just 3% this year, held back by the Iran war, but boosted by AI.  That’s a downgrade from the 3.1% it predicted in April and 3.5% it expected seven months ago.  The fund says growth should rebound to 3.4% in 2027.  The IMF forecasts assume the Strait of Hormuz reopens later this month and fully returns to normal by next March. https://apnews.com/article/imf-world-economy-war-ai-5df2a8eb775b94bb6de1067fd694f6f0

Meta announced yesterday that it will invest $9.1b to build its first artificial intelligence data center outside the U.S. in Alberta, Canada.  It’ll be powered by its own natural gas-fired plant.  Because Alberta’s power grid cannot support the multiple large AI data centers it is courting to locate there, so it’s prioritizing those that build or secure their own power generation.  The 932-megawatt plant in Sturgeon County is expected to begin operation in the second half of 2030.  https://apnews.com/article/meta-ai-data-center-canada-922a7d15ab730ec53b934269fc00a0fa

U.S. home resales were down 2.4% in June compared with May.  Inventory was down a little over a half percent, but that was 1.3% higher than last June.  One fourth of all previously-owned home sales were all-cash, down from 29% a year ago.  Sales continue to be strongest at the high-end of the market.  While the low-end declines, sales of homes priced above $1m were up 18%.  The average rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages ticked up to 6.68% yesterday. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/09/june-home-sales-prices.html

Shares in Levi Strauss dropped in spite of a quarterly report that beat Wall Street expectations on both the top and bottom end.  The denim maker is now expecting full-year sales to rise between 7% and 7 ½% with earnings per share at about $1.50.  In spite of all that, shared fell 5% in extended trading. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/08/levi-strauss-levi-q2-2026-earnings.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Singer Bonnie Tyler has died at the age of 75.  Born Gaynor Hopkins in Wales in 1951, she grew up in a working-class family and dropped out of school at age 16.  She began singing in clubs under different stage names before officially landing on Bonnie Tyler when she signed to RCA Records in the 1970s. Tyler went on to release a string of pop-rock singles with moderate success in the latter part of the decade, including “Lost in France.”  Not following doctors’ orders while recovering from throat surgery led to a permanent change in her voice. The coarser, raspy quality of her vocals would almost immediately boost her career and become the defining quality of her sound. One of her first singles post-op, “It’s A Heartache,” became an international breakout hit, climbing to No. 3 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart in 1978. But it wasn’t until she signed to CBS and requested to work with composer and producer Jim Steinman, the man behind Meat Loaf’s success that her career would really take off.  In May, Tyler was admitted to a hospital near her home in Faro, Portugal for emergency intestinal surgery. Following the procedure, her official website announced that she had been placed in an induced coma for recovery.  (NPR)
