According to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Trump administration’s overhaul of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has already cost Americans $26.5b. Most of that comes from acting CFPB Director Russell Vought rolling back rules capping credit card and overdraft fees. Much of the rest is from the agency’s decision to drop over three dozen enforcement actions and settlements, some of which would have resulted in direct payment to consumers. Warren’s claim was made at today’s Senate oversight hearing at which Vought testified. The Senate is considering the nomination of Brian Johnson, a former CFPB deputy director to become the permanent head of the agency. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/16/trumps-cfpb-overhaul-cost-americans-26point5-billion-sen-warren-says.html
Meanwhile, the Trump administration is racing to rebuild the tariff wall. After the Supreme Court setback in the spring, the president turned first to Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974 to impose 10% tariffs globally. But Section 122 only authorizes tariffs for 150 days. Trump’s expire on July 24. Congress would have to extend those tariffs — something lawmakers are unlikely to do as the Nov. 3 midterm elections approach amid voter discontent over the high cost of Living. But the administration has more durable options: Section 301 of the same 1974 trade law permits the president to impose tariffs and other sanctions against countries found to engage in “unjustifiable,” “unreasonable” or “discriminatory” trade practices. Trump used Section 301 to impose big tariffs on China in his first term and is rolling them out again — as recently as late Wednesday when he announced 25% tariffs on some Brazilian imports, charging the world’s 11th-biggest economy with a host of unfair trade practices. Trade attorneys and analysts are confident the tariff-happy administration will manage to beat the clock and swap out Section 122 tariffs with bigger Section 301 by next Friday’s deadline. https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-supreme-court-trade-deficit-ec2bd8d8d928baafc619a161670d7725

Mortgage rates have hit their highest level in nearly a year – 6.55% for the average 30-year fixed rate loan. Just before the start of the Iran war, they’d briefly dipped below 6% for the first time in 3 ½ years, giving optimism that the housing sector would have a good 2026. Those hopes are now all but dashed as buyers find homes unaffordable and sellers who don’t have to move keeping their homes off a down market. https://www.cnn.com/2026/07/16/economy/us-mortgage-rates

Capt. Chesley Sullenberger, better known as “Sully”, the pilot of the “Miracle on the Hudson” landing of a disabled US Airways flight on the New York City river in 2009 has been diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease. Early stage means he sometimes forgets names, or the details of stories and maybe doesn’t sleep well. There is no cure for the progressive brain disease. Sullenberger shared the news with People magazine to help others with what is the most common kind of dementia. More than 7m Americans are living with Alzheimer’s. It was Capt. Sullenberger’s quick thinking that save the lives of all 155 people on board Flight 1549 January 15, 2009 when a bird strike took out both engines shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport. Less than four minutes later, Sully and his crew safely landed the jet on the Hudson River after determining that getting to an airport wasn’t feasible. Tom Hanks portrayed the captain in the 2016 film, “Sully”. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sully-sullenberger-pilot-alzheimers-miracle-hudson/
Rebates for electric vehicle purchases are coming back – at least in California. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation on Monday that offers $3,500 for first-time buyers of new EVs that cost $50,000 or less. There’s also a rebate of $1,750 for first-time buyers who purchase a used electric vehicle with window price of up to $25,000. It’s a response to President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” that killed the federal tax credit of up to $7,500 for EVs. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/07/13/california-to-offer-3500-ev-rebates-to-first-time-buyers/
