A swimmer reported missing near lifeguard tower 26 in Carlsbad Saturday evening was found deal yesterday around noon, washed ashore near tower 28. A brush fire at the southern edge of Menifee was stopped at just over 10 acres yesterday. It was first reported around 3:30p near Keller and Gloria Roads. Forward progress was halted by 5p. Firefighters from 60-year old Fire Station 15 on Lilac Road east of the 15 freeway are being temporality relocated while the station is renovated. A barricade suspect has been detained in Oceanside after running into a home at the 400 block of Holly Street Saturday evening. Police say they received reports of a possible armed women running into a home at around 5:26 p.m. The Oceanside Police Department detained the suspect at around 9:18 p.m. after deploying gas inside the home. The owner of CPR Classic, a Porsche restoration and sales shop in Fallbrook was sentenced to one year and nine months in prison Friday after pleading guilty to three counts of wire fraud amounting to $827k taken from customers in the three years since Andrea Nicole Doherty took over the business from her father, following his death in 2021. The company’s vehicle dealers license was suspended by the California DMV in 2024 with about 50 civil lawsuits filed against Doherty by the end of that year. Along with her jail sentence, she’s agreed to pay nearly $10m in restitution to 66 people. Attorney for the defense noted that 60 of those people have cases that are beyond the statute of limitations, yet Doherty’s agreed to pay them, that she inherited millions in debt when her father died, and that she did not live a lavish lifestyle as do most perpetrators of fraud. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/ex-fallbrook-porsche-resale-business-owner-sentenced-for-wire-fraud

In Major League Baseball – The Padres swept the Marlins in Miami, winning 5-3 yesterday as the Marlins losing streak hit a franchise-high 12 games. San Diego’s Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill both homered in the 8^th. The Dodgers took two out of three from the Mets in New York. The Mets managed to avoid a season sweep by Los Angeles with an 8-3 win yesterday. The Diamondback lost two out of three in Washington including a 10-7 decision yesterday with CJ Abrams and James Wood each hitting two home runs for the Nationals. In the NL West, the Padres are still in third place at just .500, 14 games behind the Dodgers and two games in back of Arizona. The Giants are in fourth place, 22 ½ games off the pace. And the Rockies are bringing up the rear with the worst record in baseball right now at 42 and 65. The Angels avoided a sweep in San Francisco by beating the Giants 4-3 yesterday. It was Mike Trout’s first four-hit game in five years. The Padres and Dodgers have today off. The Diamondbacks open a series at Pittsburgh. The Angels host Houston.

One week left until the 2026 trade deadline for MLB.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm beat Visalia 2-1 yesterday, taking four out of six in the series. They travel to Stockton for the first of six games tomorrow night.

At the Andrew Smith Sr. Memorial Softball Tournament over the weekend at Pala’s Jim Banks Sports Park, Morongo Men’s Club took first place, CaliReds from Rincon were second. On the women’s side, Morongo took first place and Warrior Women from Barona took second. (per Eric Ortega)

In the NFL – The Washington Commanders fired tight end coach Ben Steele today – two days before the start of training camp. It was over a month ago that he was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Loudoun County, Virginia where the Commanders train. In the MSL – San Diego FC bat Dallas 1-0 Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium. LAFC routed Sporting Kansas City 4-0. And the Galaxy tied San Jose 1 all. Coming up Wednesday, the MLS All-Stars play Liga MX All-Stars at 5p in Charlotte.

In the NBA – Kentavious Caldwell-Pope has agreed to a contract buyout with Memphis and will sign a one-year deal for $3.9m to join LeBron James and the Philadelphia 76ers. In the WNBA – At Saturday’s All-Star Game, Team Spoon beat Team Coop 129-122. The regular season resumes tomorrow with five games including Los Angeles hosting New York.

In golf – At the 3M Open, Jackson Koivun was the winner by three strokes over Scottie Scheffler at 25-under par 259. In the second round, Michael Kim shot a blistering round of 12-under par 59. It was only the 15^th time in PGA Tour history a golfer has shot a 59 in tournament play. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed. The Dow gained just over a tenth of a percent. The S&P 500 was down a third of a percent. And the Nasdaq was off by two thirds of a percent. Gold gained $13.20 on the Comex, trading at $4,084 an ounce. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures plunged more than 7%, or $6.43 to $82.88 a barrel.

Paramount Skydance has agreed to delay its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discover by up to nine months as it faces lawsuits by multiple state attorneys general over anti-trust concerns. The transaction was originally to be completed by September. The delay will raise the deal price tag. In a statement Friday, Paramount said the lawsuits are exactly what it wants – a direct path to a trial based on the evidence which Paramount believes will be good for competition, good for consumers, good for creators and a vindication of conclusions multiple regulators from around the world have already reached. American Airlines stock fell 8% Friday as the latest spike in fuel prices further postpones the turnaround in the airline industry. www.cnbc.com

Eli Lilly says it will file for approval of its next-generation obesity drug, retatrutide. Lilly will apply as soon as this year for the weekly injection, which appears to be more effective than existing shots and pills. The high cost of groceries is forcing changing shopping habits for many Americans on tight budgets. Couponing, comparison shopping and cutting back on favorite foods are becoming a new way of life as food has become 33% more expensive over the past seven years. In the seven before that, food prices only rose 6.4%. There are many causes for the current state of affairs. The pandemic snarled supply chains and raised labor and transportation costs. Drought, hurricanes and diseases like bird flu drove down yields. Tariffs raised prices on imported products like coffee, tomatoes and chocolate. Wars in the Ukraine and Middle East disrupted oil and fertilizer supplies. Wages were growing much more quickly than grocery prices before the pandemic. Even though they’re still growing more than climbing food prices, it isn’t by much. Experts say people are very cognizant of that. According to the US Department of Agriculture, Americans spend an average of almost 13% of their pre-tax income on eating out and at home in 2024. But for the one-fifth of U.S. households with the lowest earnings, the portion of income spent on food exceeds one third of that segment’s income. Many of them are seeking out food banks, giving up non-essentials like take-out coffee, and buying less meat or less food overall. At the movie box office, “The Odyssey” continues to dominate. It sold another $87m worth of tickets in its second week in theaters. But remember, a portion of that is IMAX where ticket prices are about 81% higher than regular theaters. The technology is driving some attendance. With only about 25 theaters in the U.S. capable of showing the film in its original 1.43 to 1 aspect ratio, some people are traveling hundreds of miles to see The Odyssey in one of those theaters. “Moana” and “Toy Story 5” remain #2 and #3 with about $10m more in sales each. “Hadestown: the Musical” opened in 4^th place with $9.7m on 2k screens. “Motor City” debuted in 9^th place with $1.6m on 1,600 screens. As if travel agents weren’t already disappearing as a thing, AI is moving in to change the face of corporate travel by organizing the bookings, and filing expense reports afterwards. Companies including Navan and Amadeus simplify reimbursements … good for employees. And ensure policy compliance … good for employers. It can detect fraudulent receipts. According to AI finance platform AppZen, more than 3 ½ million phony AI-generated receipts were created over a six-month period on a handful of websites. The number jumped 30% from 2024 to 2025. Just two months ago, software company Workday rolled out an all-in-one AI travel agent that combines, trip planning, booking, approvals, and expense reporting into one system. Amadeus offers to consolidate disconnected systems into one complete AI travel package. 1958, Esso (now known as ExxonMobil) oil company warned that listening to rock & roll music on the car radio could cost you fuel economy because the rhythm of the beat would cause the driver to be heavy on the accelerator and thus, waste gas.
In 1968, Cass Elliot released her first solo single after the breakup of The Mamas and The Papas. “Dream a Little Dream of Me” was a standard that had been around since 1931 and had been recorded by Frank Sinatra and others. Her version would be the most commercially successful, peaking at #12 on the singles chart.
In 1974, John Denver began the first of two weeks at #1 with “Annie’s Song”, a tribute to his wife said to have been written in ten minutes while on a ski lift.
On the same day, Wings began the first of seven weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Band On The Run”. It was Paul McCartney’s most successful post-Beatles album.
In 1976, Tina Turner filed for divorce from husband Ike, ending a violent 16-year marriage and musical partnership.

In 2002, Mariah Carey checked herself into a hospital suffering from “extreme exhaustion”. All public appearances including headlining MTV’s 20^th birthday party were cancelled. Her record company denied tabloid reports that cuts on her body were from suicide attempts.
In 2019, the late Amy Winehouse’s ex-boyfriend filed a seven-figure claim for a cut of the singer’s fortune saying he was with her during the six years she released her best-selling material. The family’s argument was that most of that time he spent in jail bringing nothing but pain to everyone.
