LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Firefighters from the North County Fire Protection District responded to a residential structure fire this morning on East Alvarado Street in Fallbrook. The incident was reported at 7:22a. Multiple fire engines, a rescue ambulance, battalion chiefs and additional support units were dispatched to the scene. No further details as of 10:30a. Following up on reports of a man trapped beneath a vehicle, Escondido Police found a man who’d been working underneath a vehicle in the 2200 block of Meyers Avenue dead when they arrived yesterday afternoon before 3p. Oceanside Police have officially suspended active searching for San Marcos ER nurse and mother of two, 44-year old Angelica Brophy who went missing July 6 and was last seen at Harrah’s Rincon with her vehicle entering Palomar Mountain State Park afterwards. OPD coordinated ground and dive search operations for almost two weeks without success. The Carlsbad City Council on Tuesday approved a five-story mixed-use project with 50 condos and ground floor commercial space in the downtown Village neighborhood. The site, three blocks west of the freeway on Carlsbad Village Drive currently has a long-vacant bank building on it. Eight of the condos will be deed-restricted for qualified moderate and very low-income buyers. The four units designated for very low-income will sell for about $150k. Under the state’s density bonus law, the project was allowed to have almost twice the normally allowable number of dwellings per acre at 69. State law also allows the 71-foot tall building to exceed the Village’s 45-foot limit. And because it’s within a half mile of public transit at the Carlsbad Village Coaster Station, no parking spaces are required, although the project will have at least 50. Carlsbad-based Rincon Homes says there could be as many as 73 parking spaces for residents thanks to up to 23 mechanical parking lifts. The Vista City Council will hold a public hearing August 11 on whether to declare the former Burlington Coat Factory building on Sycamore Avenue a public nuisance due to its deteriorated condition. The store has been vacant for six years, during which the roof partially collapsed. If it’s declared a public nuisance, the city can force the owner, Excel Property Management to repair and improve the property, and if they don’t, the city can step in to do the work and charge the owner for the cost. https://thecoastnews.com/vista-considers-nuisance-abatement-for-former-burlington-building/

Kaiser Permanente is edging closer to closing its Wildomar Medical offices along Inland Valley Drive as it transitions into larger offices in Wildomar and Menifee. Kaiser has already moved laboratory and radiology and diagnostic imaging departments to the new Wildomar Trail Medical Office, which first opened two years ago. That 84k square foot outpatient center cost $116.5m and has 61 provider offices. The remaining 11 physicians at Inland Valley will move to the 55k square foot three-story Kaiser facility in Menifee upon its completion next summer. The National Weather service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for all parts of Southern California beginning tomorrow and lasting through Sunday. High temperatures in Pala will ramp up to close to 100 by Saturday. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres swept its two-game series hosting Colorado, beating the Rockies 3-1 yesterday. They host San Francisco tonight. The Dodgers beat the visiting Mariners 4-2. That series continues today. Arizona shut out the Pirates in Pittsburgh. So, nothing changed in the NL West standings. Houston beat the Angels 7-4 in Anaheim. The Angels and Diamondbacks have today off.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm won 4-0 at Stockton last night. Game 3 of 6 is tonight.

In the NFL – Former Chargers linebacker and sportscaster, Billy Ray Smith died yesterday at the age of 64. He’d been picked 5^th and played ten years, all of it in San Diego. He was the face of San Diego defense until handing it off to Junior Seau in the early 90s. After his playing days, Smith became a sportscaster at KGTV where he worked for decades alongside his wife, news anchor Kimberly Hunt as well as on shows including “Chargers Preview” and “Aztec Sports Weekly” on Channel 4 and “Chargers Power Report” on Channel 6. Smith partnered with Stan Kaplan on the radio for 20 years. Former Chargers owner Alex Spanos called Billy Ray “larger than life.” Smith died after what his family called a “long journey with dementia caused by CTE” from his playing days. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/07/29/america-250-malls/

In Major League Soccer – Last night in Charlotte, the MLS All-Stars beat Mexico’s Liga MX All-Stars 4-3. Regular season play resumes Saturday with San Diego FC at Minnesota Untied, the LA Galaxy hosting FC Dallas, and LAFC at Vancouver.

In the NBA – The league inquiry into whether the Clippers got around the salary cap to pay Kawhi Leonard could drag into 2027 if either party doesn’t agree with the findings or any proposed settlement. Sources close to the NBA told ESPN that the players’ union is prepared to take the matter to arbitration if a settlement offer isn’t backed up with solid evidence that the Clippers acted illegally, which they deny. In the WNBA – Last night’s winners were Atlanta and Phoenix.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed strong gains on all three major U.S. indexes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 8 tenths of a percent. Microsoft and Amazon led the charge. The S&P 500 gained 1 ¼%. The Nasdaq was up nearly 2 ½%. Gold traded significantly higher on the Comex, up $139.10 to $4,175.40 an ounce. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 89 cents to $83.57 a barrel.

Amazon stock’s strong performance today precedes an earnings announcement later today. Investors are obviously expecting the numbers to be strong.

Mortgage rates hit their highest level in a year, rising to an average of 6.66% for a 30-year fixed rate. It’s the fourth consecutive weekly increase. One year ago, the average was 6.72%. Mortgage rates tend to follow Treasury yields. The 10-year T-note was 3.97% in late February, before the start of the Iran war. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which formerly owned and operated the Golden Globe Awards is suing its new owner, Penske Media, claiming there was fraud connected to the sale. Company owner Jay Penske is alleged to have colluded with holding company Eldridge Industries and its CEO, Todd Boehly to create a backlash against HFPA to devalue the Globes and then pressure HFPA into the forced sale. In 2021, an LA Times investigation revealed the Hollywood Foreign Press had only one Black member. The public outcry and boycott led NBC to refuse to air the Golden Globe Awards in 2022. Yesterday’s lawsuit alleges Penske and Boehly instigated the boycott, hid their involvement in the sale from the HFPA, is in violation of California anti-trust laws, and reneged on promises of lifetime Golden Globe tickets, voting privileges and other perks for Association members. There are now about 900 malls in the U.S., down from a high of 1,100 in 2008 according to research firm, Green Street. You’ve been hearing about the death of malls for years. And malls, like the rest of the economy are in what economists call a K-shaped trajectory. Much in the same way that Rez Radio’s live audio stream is available on iHeartRadio and other so-called aggregators, video streaming is about to enter a new era that could be titled “Aggregation.” NBCUniversal announced this week that it has struck a deal with YouTube Premium to get Peacock Premium streams included with a YouTube subscription. YouTube Premium’s $15.99 won’t change with the additional programming. The service currently has 125m global subscribers. NBCU’s decision to allow Peacock content on another streaming service signals a new willingness to allow programming outside of a service’s own paywall. NBCU is set to be spun off from Comcast next year as a publicly-traded company on its own. The goal right now is to get Peacock in front of more viewers to increase ad revenue. YouTube currently has the largest young audience in streaming. Companies poised to become aggregators of video streaming by virtue of their size include YouTube, Netflix, Disney, and Amazon Prime. If the Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery merger happens, it would join those ranks. Sales of electric vehicles in California rebounded a bit in the second quarter. The war in Iran is a factor. Faced with soaring gasoline and diesel prices, buyers are taking another look at EVs. Another is the rebound from the elimination of the $7,500 federal tax credit last fall. That caused zero-emissions vehicle sales to crash in the first quarter of this year. Sales have since emerged from that trough and should get better with the help of California EV incentives being created by SB 168. That’s $3,500 for first time EV purchases of vehicles with an MSRP of less than $50k and $1,750 for first-time buyers of used EVs less than $25k. Thirteen automakers have agreed to participate in California’s new EV rebate program which begins later this summer. The California New Car Dealers Association says zero-emissions registrations were up 4% for Q2 compared with this year’s first quarter. The best-seller was Tesla’s Model Y. Only the two lower versions of that model will qualify for the new California EV rebate. Three underperforming locations of San Diego-based Breakfast Republic restaurants will be closing as of August 9. The leases are expiring on the locations in Encinitas and Ocean Beach. The parent company, Rise & Shine Hospitality owns the building at the North Park location, but is putting it up for sale with Rise & Shine founder Johan Engman saying business there declined in part due to the city removing 175 street parking spaces to install bike lanes several years ago. Five other San Diego County locations will continue as the company plans for three new Southern California locations and a move into Texas in December.

On this day in music history – July 30,

1955, Johnny Cash first recorded “Folsom Prison Blues”, a song he’d been inspired to write after seeing the movie “Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison” while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force in Germany.
In 1966, the Beatles began the first of five weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Yesterday … And Today”. Issued only in the U.S. and Canada, it’s remembered for the controversy surrounding its original album cover – the so-called “butcher cover” featuring the band dressed in white smocks and covered with decapitated chidren’s dolls and pieces of raw meat.
On that same day in 1966, The Troggs began the first of two weeks at #1 on the singles chart with their cover of “Wild Thing”. Due to a dispute, it was released on two competing labels. Since both were the identical song, Billboard combined their sales, making Wild Thing the only song to simultaneously reach #1 for two different record companies.
In 1974, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street band played The Troubadour in LA on a double bill with Roger McGuinn from The Byrds.
In 1977, The Bee Gees’ little brother, Andy Gibb began the first of four weeks at #1 with “I Just Wanna Be Your Everything”.
In 1986, Variety reported that RCA dropped John Denver from its roster because of his single, “What Are We Making Weapons For?” The song upset the label’s new owner, General Electric, one of the country’s biggest defense contractors.
In 1987, David Bowie kicked off the U.S. leg of his Glass Spider Tour in Philadelphia. It was claimed to be the largest touring set ever with a giant spider 60 feet high and 64 feet wide. The set required a total of 43 trucks to transport between venues.
In 1991, a police officer was forced to tear up a traffic ticket issued to a limo containing Axl Rose after it made an illegal turn. Rose threatened to cancel that night’s Guns ‘N’ Roses concert, creating big problems for local law enforcement if the ticket was given to the driver.
In 2003, Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records in Memphis died of respiratory failure. Phillips discovered Elvis Presley and worked with Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Ike Turner, B.B. King, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
In 2015, country singer Lynn Anderson died at the age of 67. Best known for the song “Rose Garden”, Anderson had 12 #1, 18 top ten, and more than 50 top 40 hits in her career.
