Opening arguments are being given today in the biggest case ever over youth safety and addiction. 29 state attorneys general allege that Meta – the parent company of Facebook and Instagram intentionally designed its platforms to get young people addicted, boosting business, but harming the mental health of children and teens. They’re also claiming Meta misled the public about the risks and collected children’s personal data, in violation of federal law. US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers is overseeing the proceedings in Oakland. The court would have wide discretion over the size of any financial penalty, which some have suggested could be over $1 trillion. Legal experts say the final amount is unlikely to be that high. https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/18/tech/meta-attorneys-general-addiction-trial-opening-arguments https://abc7.com/post/opening-arguments-set-begin-metas-federal-trial-child-safety/19696950/

Thirty years after the fact, the Tupac Shakur murder trial has begun in Las Vegas. Former gang leader Duane “Keefe D” Davis, now age 63 is the defendant. He has pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with a deadly weapon with gang enhancements. Prosecutors are saying Davis did not personally pull the trigger, but acted as the “shot-caller” and on-site man in charge who orchestrated the drive-by shooting to avenge a fight involving his nephew. In opening statements, they point to Davis’s public admissions in his 2019 memoir. The defense is claiming flaws in the decades-long investigation and say their client’s media boasts were exaggerations, not a confession. The trial is expected to last a month and is not likely to establish who actually fired the fatal shots, since other occupants of the vehicle that night are now dead. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/arts/opening-statements-begin-in-long-awaited-trial-in-tupac-shakurs-1996-killing
Taylor Swift’s music can kill you. A recent study by JAMA Network Open shows a 15% increase in traffic fatalities on days when major, highly anticipated music albums are released. The report blames the spike on distracted driving – specifically, a 43% surge in music streaming searches as drivers fumble with phones and dashboard touchscreens to play the new tracks the moment they’re released. Traffic fatalities averages about 139 on days of major drops compared to 121 on the days before and after. The increase was most pronounced among younger drivers, male drivers, and vehicles equipped with infotainment touchscreens. The drivers were sober and driving conditions optimal, removing weather or alcohol as primary factors. A large majority were driving alone. Indicating that when available, passengers handled the music acquisitions. The study focused on ten major album releases between 2017 and 2022 including “Midnights” by Taylor Swift, “Scorpion” by Drake, and “Harry’s House” by Harry Styles. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/aug/17/top-album-releases-linked-to-rise-in-fatal-crashes-as-distracted-drivers-access-music
