As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks rebounded with the Dow up two tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 gained three tenths.  And the Nasdaq rose a little over a tenth.  Comex gold futures shot up $124, trading at $4,5544.60 an ounce.  The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $1.76, trading at $86.70 a barrel.

Amid conflicting reports, with both sides claiming the upper hand, CNN is reporting that the U.S., with its Navy patrols is gaining, while Iran is losing control of the critical shipping lane known as the Strait of Hormuz.  Iran has attacked dozens of ships trying to travel the Strait via the north coast of Oman.  In spite of the risk, most ships are now ignoring Iran’s demands and proceeding with the promise of protection from U.S. naval forces.  Some ships are traversing the route as so-called “dark traffic” with their transponders off for weeks at a time to elude tracking devices.  This is in sharp contrast to one month ago when there were virtually no ships passing through the Omani route.  The expiration of the Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. and Iran this week theoretically allows Iran to begin charging tolls again.  But it doesn’t appear they’ve able to do so.  U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright says that combined oil shipments through the Strait and rerouted other ways now total about 15m barrels per day, which is within 5m barrels of the daily average before the war. https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/18/business/iran-strait-of-hormuz-oil

Target is revamping its in-store presentation as it tries to become a destination for food purchases.  Its turnaround plans, which include an ambitious grocery-section makeover featuring more snack foods is already paying off to the point that the big box retailer boosted its earnings forecast for the year as it presented better-than-expected second quarter results today.  Main competitor, Walmart already has the image as a destination for groceries rather than an add-on like at Target.  Target’s full-year sales growth projection is now 5% – a full point better than previously predicted.  Same-store sales were up 3.8% thanks in part to a 3.6% increase in foot traffic.  Tariff refunds are helping as well.  Target is doing especially well in snack sales, which were up 15%.  Plush toy and Lego sales gains were also double-digit.  CEO Michael Fiddelke says the company’s clothing and home goods sections are the next areas in need of attention.  Target stock rose 1% in morning trading.  Walmart’s Q2 numbers come out tomorrow. https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/20260819111/targets-grocery-overhaul-is-helping-it-win-back-customers https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/20260819111/targets-grocery-overhaul-is-helping-it-win-back-customers

The Disney-owned ABC television network has filed a First Amendment lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission which had called for an early broadcast license renewal for network-owned stations.  The demand is allegedly tied to Disney’s DEI practices.  The suit calls for a halt to the early broadcast renewal proceedings, saying the FCC’s recent investigation into the company is a “retaliatory campaign” for programming which has been critical of President Trump.  The early review began shortly after political backlash against ABC for comments made by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel on his show.  Government criticism also singled out the daytime talk show, “The View”.  The FCC says it is only acting in the public interest. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/18/disney-abc-first-amendment-lawsuit-fcc.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Frank Beard, drummer for ZZ Top has died.  He was on hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas when he passed with family at his side on Monday.  His signature backbeat kept ZZ Top going for six decades.  Beard’s health had forced the group to cancel its Hollywood Bowl concert two weeks ago.  He’d been missing from several recent ZZ Top shows with Michael Monahan filling in on drums.  Though Billy Gibbons is the only original member from 1969, Beard became the group’s drummer right after they recorded their first single that same year.  Bass player Dusty Hill from Beard’s previous band joined shortly after when all three were 20 years old.  ZZ Top’s first big success was 1973’s “Tres Hombres” album, featuring the hit “La Grange”.  Their biggest success came ten years later with “Eliminator” and music videos for the hits “Gimme All Your Lovin’” and “Legs” featured in high rotation on MTV.  Through most of their years together, Beard ironically was the only member of the trio without a long, flowing beard.  The cause of death was not disclosed.  Frank Beard was 77. https://apnews.com/article/frank-beard-died-zz-top-obit-72139238d1dbf3d277bdb3b8584eecc9

Shares in Moderna doubled today after the drug maker said its experimental mRNA cancer treatment passed a key test. The cancer vaccine called intismeran can be tailored to individual patients based on unique mutations within their tumors.  The drug is being paired with Keytruda – an immunotherapy drug made by Merck.  The companies did not say how long test patients survived without cancer returning or whether they lived longer overall.  The new treatment would be a first of its kind if approved by regulators.  https://apnews.com/article/moderna-mrna-merck-cancer-melanoma-intismeran-keytruda-2330dce708b0af215b68570b19d025df
