At least one person was taken to a hospital after a crash on Highway 76 at Olive Hill Road in Bonsall Saturday. It happened around 9:22p. It was not immediately clear how many vehicles or people were involved. Friday morning, a vehicle veered off of Old Highway 395 near Tecalote Lane, tubling down an embankment, landing on its roof, trapping one person inside. A witness reported hearing the crash near the 11th hole of Pala Mesa Golf Resort, then seeing it, demolished and on its roof. A vegetation fire near Sandia Creek Drive and El Prado Road in De Luz on Saturday was contained to seven acres of open brush thanks to heavy air support. For the second time in about a month, a fire was reported in the storm drain area on South Mission Road under West Aviation Road in Fallbrook. It happened just after 8p Saturday in an area is known to be frequented by several homeless people who sometimes build fires. Quick thinking by a passer by may have saved a surfer’s life Saturday. Benita Karo was walking along a North County beach Saturday when she witnessed a surfer, blindsided by a giant wave and slammed into rocks on the shore. When she didn’t see him resurface, she called for help from bystanders and ran to find him face down and unconscious in the water. He was quickly transported by first responders to a hospital. The National Weather Service has warnings in effect for high surf along North County beaches through Wednesday as the remnants of former Hurrican Odalys combine with very high tides. SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres, having clinched a Wild Card slot early last week, also clinched home field advantage for that series thanks to a 10-7 win over the Diamondbacks Saturday. They also beat the snakes Sunday – the final game of the regular season. The Dodgers swept the Giants. The Angels lost two out of three in Seattle. Cleveland clinched their third straight AL Central crown with an 11-5 win over the Royals Saturday. The Padres will host the Cubs for the first Wild Card series game tomorrow at 7p on Peacock. Tomorrow’s other Wild Card games are Philadelphia at Atlanta at 11a on NBC, the White Sox at Houston at 2p on Peacock, and Boston at the New York Yankees at 5p on NBC.

In the NFL – Yesterday’s winners were Cleveland, Detroit, Indiana, Kansas City, the Giants, Pittsburgh, Washington, Jacksonville, San Francisco, Minnesota, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Denver and Buffalo over the Chargers 24-16. Tonight’s final game of Week 3 is Philadelphia at Chicago at 5:15p on ABC.
In college football – Texas retained its #1 ranking, but not without a fight. The longhorns barely beat #14 Tennessee 20-17. #21 Florida surprised #4 Ole Miss 52-28. All the other top ten teams won their games.
In Major League Soccer – On Saturday, the Galaxy beat the Rapids 3-2. LAFC lost to Dallas 1-0, and San Diego tied Austin 3 all.
In the NBA – The preseason begins this Saturday.
In the WNBA – Yesterday’s winners were New York, Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Golden State.
In the NHL – The preseason begins tomorrow.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down. The Dow fell 4 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 was down a half percent. And the Nasdaq was off by 6 tenths. Comex gold plunged $153.10 to $4,168.70 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 23 cents to $92.18 a barrel.
Hundreds of flights have been delayed or cancelled because of huge storms hitting the Eastern seaboard. About one fourth of flights out of Boston were cancelled yesterday. Most other airports experienced only delays. About 660, or about 60% of flights at New York’s LaGuaridia airport were delayed yesterday. Yet, many airlines have managed to keep to their schedules intact. Coca-Cola has hired Rob Gehring from Corona-based Monster Energy to run its North American operations. Monster’s sales have been up 20% in just the second quarter. Meanwhile, Coke is struggling to maintain any growth as consumers cut back on spending in the face of higher gas and grocery prices. According to Cox Automotive, for the first time ever, Hyundai is expected to surpass Ford in quarterly sales. Ford and General Motors’ sales are lagging because they don’t have many hybrid vehicles in their lineups. Hybrids are the current hot sellers. Starbucks is planning to close about 250 locations. That’s 1% of its North American stores. They’re also projecting net new openings of 440 cafes, down about 50% from previous plans. Locations to be closed will be chosen from underperformers and those lacking the chain’s café vibe. A re-release topped the movie box office this past weekend. “Avengers Endgame: Encore” was the #1 film with $26m in ticket sales on 3k screens. Last week’s top movie, “Resident Evil” dropped to second place with $23.3m – down 61% from its debut last week. “Heart of the Beast” opened in third place with $20m on 3,400 screens. Other new releases rounded out the top five. “Primetime” opened in 4th with $19.2m. “Forgotten Island” was 5th with $12.8m. Last week’s 2nd through 4th place movies each dropped four places. At last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift won the biggest award of the night for “The Fate of Ophelia”. In accepting the honor, she dedicated it to the late Dolly Parton. Along with two others earned last night, Swift now has 33 MTV awards – the most of any performer. But it was Madonna who ruled the evening with seven awards including Artist of the Year and Best Dance Video for “Confessions II – The Film”. It was 32 years ago that she performed “Like a Virgin” at the first VMAs. SpaceX’s Starship reached orbit for the first time in spite of an unexpected engine shutdown midflight this morning. It deployed its first batch of new Starlink satellites. But the mission was cut short and ended with a controlled crash into the Pacific Ocean. https://www.reuters.com/
If they win House or Senate in the mid-term elections, Democrats have vowed to launch investigations into Trump family business deals. Corporate donors to the President’s ballroom and those involved in business deals brokered by Trump family members are expected to be among the first targets of Congressional investigations. https://www.reuters.com/
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, General Motors will see its technology costs drop by over $20b over the next five years thanks to drastically lower fuel economy requirements finalized today. The entire industry is expected to save on technology costs to the tune of $60b, or about $1,289 per vehicle through 2031. The new rule is expected to take effect in early December. - 1968, The Beatles began the first of nine weeks at #1 with “Hey Jude”, a song Paul McCartney wrote for John Lennon’s son, Julian. It was the group’s 16th #1 hit and the biggest selling song by anyone in 1968.
- In 1974, Bad Company hit #1 on the album chart with their self-titled debut album. The group consisted of Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke from Free, Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople, and Boz Burrell from King Crimson. Bad Company recorded six albums before breaking up in 1983.
- On the same day, Canadian singer Andy Kim had the #1 single with “Rock Me Gently”. Kim had co-written The Archies’ hit “Sugar Sugar” five years earlier. That song had been rejected by The Monkees, who were trying to outgrow their original bubblegum pop image.
- In 1976 Stevie Wonder released “Songs in the Key of Life”, a double LP with a bonus EP. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart the first week of October – only the third album ever to do that and the first by an American artist.
- On the same day, A&M Records sued George Harrison for being two months late delivering a new album to the label.
- In 1991, jazz trumpeter, bandleader and composer Miles Davis died of a stroke and pneumonia. His 1959 album, “Kind of Blue” is considered one of the greatest albums of all time in any genre of music.
- On the same day, Garth Brooks’ album “Ropin’ the Wind” hit #1 for the first of 18 weeks. It spent a total of 70 weeks on the chart and sold 11m copies.
- And also in 1991, Nirvana made an appearance at Tower Records in New York City and played a concert at The Marquee Club that night in support of their new album, “Nevermind” and the single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” which had just entered the Top 20.
- In 2002, VH1 viewers voted Madonna the greatest female singer of all time. Critics blasted the poll which also had Kylie Minogue at #2 but placed Diana Ross 12th and Annie Lennox 14th.
- On the same day, Tina Turner’s hometown which she made famous in her song, Nutbush City Limits named a stretch of state highway 19 in the town 50 miles north of Memphis, The Tina Turner Highway.
- In 2004, producer Phil Spector was charged with the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. He remained free on $1m bail.
- In 2009, Lucy Vodden, a childhood friend of John Lennon’s son Julian passed away from lupus. She was the inspiration for the song “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” after Julian had brought home a nursery school drawing he’d made and called it what became the song’s title.
- In 2019 Metallica cancelled an upcoming concert tour when front man James Hetfield entered rehab.
