LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A multi-vehicle traffic collision late yesterday afternoon forced a hard road closure and required a significant emergency medical response on Cole Grade Road in Valley Center.  Initial reports from the scene were conflicting, indicating between two and three vehicles were involved.  Dispatchers noted a maroon Nissan Frontier and a gray Honda Accord were part of the collision, along with reports of a blue SUV and another unidentified sedan. No further details released. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/03/12/news/multi-vehicle-collision-forces-hard-closure-on-cole-grade-road-in-valley-center/81440.html

The extensive report from an investigation into the artillery shell that exploded over I-5 in Camp Pendleton in October concluded it was a rare ordinance malfunction.  Shrapnel from the live-fire demonstration landed on a CHP vehicle and motorcycle that were part of the security detail for Vice President JD Vance, who attended the event with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth in honor of the U.S. Marine Corps’ 250th birthday celebration.  That section of freeway was closed to traffic at the time of the October 18 incident.   The investigation found no evidence of operator error and concluded that there could have been undetermined secondary causes for the pre-mature detonation.  The Marine Corp is reviewing the findings and may adjust procedures for future demonstrations near public infrastructure. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/rare-malfunction-caused-shrapnel-incident-at-camp-pendleton-in-october

Poll workers are needed for the June 2 primary election.  The San Diego Registrar of Voters is now hiring and especially interested in bi-lingual speakers.  Federal law requires the Registrar to provide bi-lingual materials and speakers fluent in Spanish, Filipino, Vietnamese and Chinese.  State and county rules require some vote centers to have workers fluent in 11 other languages.  Poll workers are needed at vote centers for either four or eleven days during the two weeks leading up to Election Day.  Pay is $145 per day with a bonus on Election Day due to the long hours.  You must be a US citizen and registered to vote in California or lawfully admitted for permanent US residency, have reliable transportation, complete two paid days of training, and be available during the two weeks leading up to June 2.  Applications are available at www.SDVote.com or call 858 565 5800. https://www.countynewscenter.com/poll-workers-needed-for-june-2-gubernatorial-primary-election/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks recovered some of last week’s losses with the market having its best day since the Iran war began.  The Dow was up 9 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 gained 1.1%.  And the Nasdaq rose 1.4%.  Gold continued to fall, down another $54.30 on the Comex at $5,007.40 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell $3.83 to $94.88 a barrel.

Mortgage rates spiked last week.  The average 30-year fixed rate loan hit 6.41% on Friday. Two weeks ago, it had dropped to match a more than two-year low at 5.99%.  It’s the result of bond yields moving higher due to the Iran war.  Though Spring demand and that sub-6% rate had started a surge in new applications, that trend is expected to reverse over the next couple of weeks.  For the nationwide-average $400k home with 20% down, the rate increase over the past two weeks means a $115 higher monthly payment. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/13/mortgage-rates-7-month-high.html

The retail industry could soon be taking a hit from the war due to disruption of the global supply chain.  Economic analysts say its too early to tell exactly what items might become more expensive, but they’re certain that shelf prices will have to rise if either the war doesn’t end or the Strait of Hormuz doesn’t reopen to shipping very soon.  Fertilizers, metals, gas and other fuel are the most-impacted so far.  Iranian leaders have said closing the shipping lanes is a “tool to pressure the enemy”.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/03/13/iran-war-retail-prices.html

The US, Canada and Mexico are set to begin talks about renewing the 2020 US-Mexico-Canada Agreement President Trump negotiated with our neighboring countries in the final year of his first administration.  The US will demand changes with Trump saying he’ll pull us out of the pact if he doesn’t get what he wants.  It’s also possible separate deals could be reached with the other two participating countries.  Talks begin with Mexico today. https://apnews.com/article/trump-usmca-mexico-canada-trade-tariffs-7a838812f96da25af9f7975461421ed2

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Hoppers” remained the #1 film, selling another $28.5m worth of tickets.  “Reminders of Him” debuted in second place with $18.2m on 600 fewer screens.  “Undertone” opened in 3rd with $9.3m on 2,500 screens.  “Scream 7” fell to 4th in its 3rd week of release.   A pair of re-releases, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” placed 8th and 9th.  The weekend’s top ten fell 12% short of last weekend, but still about average for the year so far. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W11/

For movies that have been out a little longer, last night at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater was the center of the entertainment universe with the 97th Academy Awards ceremonies.  “One Battle After Another” won Best Picture and five other awards including Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Directing for Paul Thomas Anderson, and the first-ever Oscar for Best Casting.  “Sinners”, with a record 16 nominations had a fairly big night, taking home four Oscars including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan and for his role playing twins, Smoke and Stack.  Sinners’ Autumn Durald Arkapaw made history as the first-ever female to win Best Cinematography.  “Frankenstein” earned three Oscars and “KPop Demon Hunters” took home two.  The “In Memoriam” segment began with a moving tribute to Rob and Michelle Reiner by longtime friend and collaborator Billy Crystal and ended with an appearance of about two dozen leading actors from Reiner’s films.  “In Memoriam” ended with Barbra Streisand singing a verse of “The Way We Were” to her late co-star, Robert Redford.  Because the ceremonies tend to run almost four hours, host Conan O’Brien left a surprise under guests’ seats before the show began.  The box containing snacks included a signed note along with a sketch of the comedian.  It read, “I hope you enjoy this Conan O’Brien ‘Moderately Happy Meal.’  These snacks may not look like much, but in any movie theater they would run you $85.  Good luck tonight, have fun, and remember that loud, enthusiastic laugher is good for your health and my ego.” https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/movies/live/oscars-2026-winners-and-recap-one-battle-after-another-named-best-picture-jessie-buckley-and-michael-b-jordan-take-home-acting-awards-140057491.html

On this day in music history – March 16,

  • In 1959, 25 years after its first popular recording by the Paul Whiteman orchestra, the Jerome Kern song “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” became a #1 hit for The Platters.
  • In 1964, with Beatlemania now at full boil in America, the group set a record for advance sales with 2.1m copies ordered for their new single, “Can’t Buy Me Love”.  When questioned by journalists about the song’s meaning, Paul McCartney took offense at suggestions that it was about a prostitute.
  • In 1968, “(Sittin’ on the) Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding began the first of five weeks at #1.  Otis had died in a plane crash three months earlier, less than a week after he’d recorded it.  He never did record the final verse.  That’s why it ends with his whistle solo.
  • In 1970, Motown singer Tammi Terrell died of a brain tumor at the age of 24.  She had collapsed into Marvin Gaye’s arms on stage during a 1967 concert duet.
  • In 1971, winners at that year’s Grammys included Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the year.  The Carpenters won Best New Act and Best Vocal Performance for “Close to You”.
  • In 1974, Elvis Presley played the first of four nights at Midsouth Coliseum in Memphis – his first performance in that city since 1961.
  • In 1991, seven members of singer Reba McEntire’s band and her road manager along with three others were killed when their private jet crashed just south of the border in Tijuana.  McEntire, who had given a private concert for IBM employees in San Diego the night before was not on the plane.
  • In 1992 trouble broke out at a Metallica concert in Orlando Arena including fans dangling an usher by his ankles from a balcony.  The band was charged $38k for cleanup and repairs for damage done by the audience.
  • In 2010, a rare bootleg recording of Led Zeppelin at their November 16, 1971 show in Ipswitch, England showed up at a garage sale.  It was purchased by a fan for 2 or 3 pounds sterling and was apparently recorded by someone standing right down front as you could hear Robert Plant talking off-mic to the crowd at the foot of the stage.
  • In 2015, Andy Fraser, songwriter and bass player for Free died of a heart attack at the age of 62.  He co-wrote the band’s biggest hit “All Right Now” along with Paul Rogers.  He also wrote songs for Robert Palmer, Joe Cocker, Chaka Kahn, and Rod Stewart.
  • In 2019, the King of Surf Guitar, Dick Dale died at the age of 81.  His band appeared in the 60’s movie, “Beach Blanket Bingo”.  His hit “Misrlou” was featured in the opening credits of Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction”.
