A brush fire sparked by a roadside vehicle fire on northbound I-15 threatened structures near Stewart Canyon and Horse Creek Ranch Roads yesterday afternoon. The Mission 2 Fire began around 1p. It was contained at less than 7 acres about an hour later. Evacuations were ordered for homes and schools east of the freeway between Mission Road and Highway 76. Pala Park on Old Highway 76 was the temporary evacuation point. Those orders were quickly lifted. Freeway ramps were closed for a time as well. Northbound I-15 traffic was heavily impacted for the rest of the day, with backups into Escondido well into the evening commute. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/brush-fire-burns-near-i-15-fallbrook-threatens-structures
Jake Lopez Lawrence pleaded not guilty yesterday to felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter charges for the deaths of an ER nurse and a former Marine on I-15 at about 4a on June 11. 21-year old Lawrence had been drinking with friends at a club in Hillcrest several hours earlier. His blood alcohol level was still double the legal limit at the time of the crash. The two victims had stopped to help after Lawrence rear ended a minivan on I-15 north of Highway 76. Another car struck Lawrence’s, pushing it into ER nurse Nery Benitez and former Marine Gary Tillman, both of whom were killed. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/dui-suspect-pleads-not-guilty-after-two-good-samaritans-killed-on-i-15/509-43420f66-073a-4b1b-8e16-d9d7ea347ace

In announcing Wednesday’s decision to keep interest rates the same, half of the 18 Federal Reserve governors said they’d support a rate hike later this year. Six said they’d support two or more quarter-point increases. That’s a major change from March, when none supported a rate hike and the overall forecast was for one cut in 2026. This month’s statement, the first under new Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh was unusually brief and reflected his influence. Warsh had previously criticized the Fed for commenting too broadly on the economy. Nevertheless, it’s a disappointment for President Trump, who appointed Warsh and has pushed the Fed to lower rates. The fact that even with leadership changes, things are going the opposite direction suggests increased concern by Fed officials about inflation. https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-kevin-warsh-interest-rates-103325df845d2d6bde63dfa4b8093d35
Apple CEO Tim Cook says iPhone prices will be rising due to a global shortage of computer memory and storage chips. In his words, “I’ve never seen anything like it in any area in over 40 years.” Cook compared the shortage to a “hundred-year flood.” Though he did not disclose pricing, the tech research firm TechInsights estimates the price of the soon-to-be-released iPhone Pro 19 will go up more than $200 to about $1,299. A Morgan Stanley expert explained that PC and smartphone manufacturers are feeling the pinch of “chipflation”, when memory stop getting cheaper over time and become more expensive and harder to get. https://abcnews.com/Business/tim-cook-prices-apple-devices-jump-amid-memory/story?id=133996174

California diners are losing the remaining locations of a longtime Tex-Mex restaurant chain as On The Border continues to shrink after filing for bankruptcy and shutting down most of its U.S. operations. On The Border’s financial troubles ultimately resulted in a dramatic reduction of its restaurant footprint. That summer job for teens isn’t so easy to come by anymore. Federal data shows about one third of 16 to 19-year olds had a job last summer. That’s down from a peak of 60% in the late 1970s. Last year alone, about one quarter fewer teens found summer jobs than the year before. According outplacement firm, Challenger, Gray and Christmas, this summer is expected to have the lowest hiring total for teens since the Labor Department began tracking that statistic in 1948. Traditionally, teens most commonly worked in food preparation and serving jobs, and sales. But high minimum wages have eliminated many entry-level jobs and first-time teen job hunters are now competing with more experienced candidates for the remaining ones. https://apnews.com/article/teens-summer-jobs-unemployment-economy-5415ea134061119e6450b9de15300ba2

During the four-month Strait of Hormuz closure, over 1.1b barrels of crude oil failed to make it to their destination countries and refineries, according to analytics firm Kpler. The International Energy Administration’s strategic reserve is at its lowest level in 36 years. The U.S. reserve is at a 43-year low. Storage facilities around the world are nearing a tipping point. President Trump told the G7 meeting in Versailles on Wednesday that “We run out of reserves in about four weeks.” While the trading markets have reacted with joy to the announcement of a peace deal with Iran, experts aren’t so sure there’s that much to celebrate and that the solution may not have come soon enough to avoid trouble. They say prices are overreacting to the news without taking into consideration how long it’s going to take to clear out backlog of ships in the Persian Gulf, get them to market, get oil storage tanks restocked, and begin refining the stuff. An analyst at RBC Capital Markets said, “The market has jumped 7 steps ahead of where we are now.” Translation: pump prices and the cost over everything requiring crude oil – which is just about everything, could go back up again … and soon. https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/19/business/oil-price-supply-inventories
