A gas leak caused an evacuation at Vail Ranch Center at Temecula and Redhawk Parkways this morning just after 7a.  A two-inch gas line outside a business there broke for unknown reasons, forcing the evacuation of at least ten businesses until SoCal Gas could make repairs.  It also forced the closure of Temecula Parkway during the morning commute.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-gas-leak-prompts-evacuations-tuesday-morning-near-vail-ranch-center

A staff member at High Tech High North County has been arrested on child pornography charges.  Officials at the San Marcos school revealed that Erick Medina was arrested by federal authorities at his home on April 17.  It followed a lengthy investigation by the FBI San Diego Field Office’s Violent Crimes Against Children unit.  An iPhone seized from Medina allegedly contained “visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.” School officials told parents there is no indication that High Tech High students were involved and they encourage anyone with information on the case to contact a school director or the dean. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/high-tech-high-north-county-staff-member-faces-child-porn-possession-charges

Singer D4vid was officially charged yesterday with the murder of 14-year old Celeste Rivas Hernandez from Lake Elsinore.  Her body was found in the trunk of his abandoned Tesla last September, more than a year after she’d gone missing.  21-year old David Anthony Burke was arrested last week after a 7-month investigation and pleaded “not guilty” at yesterday’s first appearance in court.  Prosecutors have charged him with first-degree murder, continuous sexual abuse and mutilation of human remains.  The district attorney alleges Burke killed Celeste in an effort to maintain his career after she witnessed sexual acts for which he was being prosecuted.  Special circumstances being filed mean Burke could face life in prison up to a potential death penalty. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/singer-d4vd-charged-murder-death-teen-girl-found-trunk-car-rcna340865

President Trump’s nominee to replace Jerome Powell as head of the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh today told the Senate Banking Committee he never promised the White House he would cut interest rates and that the President never asked him to commit to any particular interest rate decision.  He told the committee he would be “an independent actor if confirmed.”  Hours earlier, Trump told CNBC that he would be disappointed if Warsh didn’t immediately cut interest rates.  The traditional response by the Fed to currently rising inflation would be to raise interest rates, or at least keep them unchanged. https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-kevin-warsh-jerome-powell-dd88a3f06eddcada4db555fe11e547eb

The White House has announced that Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer is resigning from the Trump administration.  Deputy Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling will take over on an acting basis.  Chavez-DeRemer is reportedly facing an investigation that she allegedly used agency resources for personal trips and that she was having an affair with a member of her security team.  She’s the third Trump cabinet member to leave during his second term, along with Homeland Security’s Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/20/labor-secretary-lori-chavez-deremer-resignation-keith-sonderling.html

U.S. retail sales were up by 1.7% in March, compared with February.  But most of the increase was money spent at gas pumps.  Today’s Commerce Department report was the first take on spending since the Iran war began and the fastest one-month increase in retail sales in more than three years.  Excluding gas prices, retail sales were up 0.6% – one tenth lower than February’s revised gain. https://apnews.com/article/retail-sales-iran-war-inflation-economy-f760bbaba29f9ba040ae7da8041e9388

After 15 years in the job he inherited from Steve Jobs, Apple CEO Tim Cook will be stepping down as of September 1.  His successor will be Apple’s head of hardware engineering, John Ternus.  With the company’s market value soaring by more than $3.6 trillion during his tenure, Cook will remain as executive chairman.  https://apnews.com/article/apple-tim-cook-ceo-chage-john-tenus-3e179f3ba156f37ebdc4da5c137a8263

President Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” program that the federal government could help Spirit Airlines as it faces the possibility of liquidation.  The air carrier is struggling to regain its footing as it continues in its second bankruptcy in a year.  That bankruptcy is expected to end one way or another this summer.  The federal government gave the airline industry billions of dollars during the pandemic.  But that was for all airlines, not just one single carrier.  A bailout to Spirit would set a precedent. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/21/trump-spirit-airlines.html

Amazon One Medical has launched a GLP-1 program that integrates obesity care with Amazon Pharmacy.  Pricing will be as low as $25 a month with insurance.  The program rolls GLP-1 obesity treatment into primary care.  Stock in competitors Hims & Hers Health, Viking Therapeutics and others fell on the news. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/21/amazon-glp-1-weight-loss-program.html

The executive order on psychedelics signed by President Trump on Saturday is intended to speed up research on drugs including psilocybin that are currently still part of an underground industry.  Four months ago, Trump rescheduled cannabis, opening the door for more research into marijuana.  Since then, reclassifying it from Schedule I to the lesser Schedule III has mostly stalled.  Saturday’s order directs agencies like the FDA to expand clinical trials and access for patients with serious mental health conditions.  It does nothing to legalize psychedelics other than indicate a broader shift in Washington toward medical research that might eventually lead to legal rescheduling. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/20/trump-psychedelics-executive-order-cannabis-reform.html
