Retail pump prices for regular gas are now at $4.18 a gallon nationwide. That’s $1.25 more and within a penny of the highest it’s been since the Iran war started. Crude oil prices had dipped about 18% when the cease fire was announced. But just as the cease fire and peace talks have disappeared, so have recently lower crude oil prices. The average pump price for regular gas San Diego County is now $5.99. In Riverside County, it’s $5.94. Today’s lowest local price is $4.89 at Pauma Quikstop. In southwest Riverside County, on Temecula Parkway, there’s a Sinclair station at Pechanga Parkway reported at $5.59 and a Chevron at Redhawk Parkway at $5.29. But those might be discount-with-car-wash prices. https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.47777142341775&lng=-117.09351634620948&z=15
The United Arab Emirates has quit OPEC. The third-largest oil producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries most likely plans to increase production, and says it will continue to act responsibly, though now, independently. It’s not clear how the UAE will distribute that oil until the Strait of Hormuz reopens. The country has been part of OPEC since its creation as a sovereign nation in 1971. Its predecessor, Abu Dhabi had been a member since 1967. The UAE’s departure marks a significant structural weakening of the Middle East oil cartel. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/energy/uae-quits-opec-oil-iran-talks-rcna342465
President Trump is calling for new import taxes to replace the tariffs struck down by the Supreme Court in February. Temporary taxes he rolled out at the time are set to expire in three months. The administration is looking for a more durable and lawsuit-proof solution to keep revenue flowing into the U.S. Treasury. Beginning this week, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative will begin hearings on two investigations that are expected to lead to a new round of tariffs that, like the last ones, will eventually be passed on to customers in the form of higher prices. The first hearing today and tomorrow looks at whether the economies of 60 countries which account for 99% of all U.S. imports do enough to prohibit the trade of products created by forced labor. Next week, a hearing will look into whether this country’s 16 largest trading partners are overproducing goods, driving down prices, and putting U.S. manufacturers at a disadvantage. Most major economies, including China, the EU and Japan are on both lists. Critics say the speed with which these hearings have been scheduled and will conclude indicates they are a sham. https://apnews.com/article/trump-tariffs-supreme-court-trade-import-taxes-bf712c8ab01f99c3a92e91eb74a9d03f
The Federal Reserve will meet this week, just ahead of a looming possible leadership change. The Senate Banking Committee will vote tomorrow on whether to confirm President Trump’s nominee for Fed chair, Kevin Warsh. He’s expected to be approved, setting up a confirmation vote in the House of Representatives. At the Fed’s scheduled news conference later tomorrow, current chairman, Jerome Powell may indicate whether he will remain on the Federal Reserve board after his term as chairman ends May 15. His separate term as a governor continues through January 2028. Fed Chairs typically leave when their leadership term ends. But Powell has indicated he may stay on – something than hasn’t happened since 1948. https://apnews.com/article/fed-powell-trump-warsh-256afa5ce88bc134f50b8d56632132b6

President Trump is once again calling on ABC and parent company Disney to fire late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. Two days before a gunman tried to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday, Kimmel had done a make-believe parody of the event in roast-fashion in which he joked that Melania Trump had the “glow” of “an expectant widow.” The President now says that joke was a call to violence. His demand for the network to fire Kimmel a second time came a few hours after Melania blasted the comedian for “hateful and violent rhetoric”. Kimmel’s previous firing last September, which turned out to be more of a brief suspension, had been over a joke centering on the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. That was under a different Disney CEO. Josh D’Amaro took over the helm last month. It’s unclear if that will make a difference this time. Meanwhile, the Trump-controlled FCC is gearing up to launch a review of the licenses of the eight Disney-owned ABC stations. The unprecedented move is tied to a year-long investigation into Disney DEI practices. Kimmel’s latest comments could factor into it. https://thehill.com/homenews/media/5851166-trump-calls-kimmel-firing/ https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fcc-direct-disney-owned-tv-stations-file-early-license-renewals-source-rcna342507
