SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – Oklahoma City has taken a two games to none lead in its first round series against Phoenix, beating the Suns 120-107 last night.  Detroit evened up its series with Orlando, beating the Magic 98-83.  Tonight, it’s Game Three with New York at Atlanta, Cleveland at Toronto, and Denver at Minnesota.  The Cavaliers lead that series two games to none.  The other two series are tied at a game apiece.

In the NHL playoffs – Another double overtime game with Dallas edging Minnesota 4-3 to take two games to one lead in that first round series.  Philadelphia beat Pittsburgh 5-2, putting the Penguins on the verge of elimination, down by three games.  The Ducks won 6-4 in Edmonton.  That series is now tied at a game apiece.  Tonight, it’s Buffalo at Boston, Carolina at Ottawa, and Colorado at Los Angeles.

Pittsburgh coach Dan Muse criticized how officials handled a second period melee on the ice that put ten players in penalty boxes with a total of 22 minutes in penalties and helped the Flyers to another win.  Players called it a “circus” and “a WWE match”.   https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/48565895/flyers-erupt-3-goals-2nd-period-push-penguins-brink-elimination

In Major League Baseball – The Padres blew a chance to move into sole possession of first place, losing to the Rockies in Denver 8-3.  Shohei Ohtani pitched six scoreless innings for the Dodgers last night in San Francisco.  But right after he left, Patrick Baily broke the scoreless tie with a 3-run homer as the Giants handed LA their fourth loss in five games.  The Angels beat the visiting Blue Jays 7-3 avoiding a series sweep.  They get today off.  The Padres and Dodgers’ series both conclude with afternoon games today.

White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami tied a Major League Record, homering in his fifth straight game yesterday.  12 others have done it since 1900.  It also tied a club record for any player.  Yesterday’s 451-foot shot to right-center field was Murakami’s 10th homer this season. Eight of them have been at away games. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/48567469/white-sox-murakami-homers-5th-straight-tie-rookie-record

MLB’s new Automated Ball Strike system isn’t supposed to favor batter or pitchers.  Statistics are beginning to back up opinions by batters that ABS has shrunken the strike zone.  Walks are near historic highs – 9.8% all at-bats.  The last time it was that high was 1950.  And batting averages are down slightly league-wide.  .240 so far this year.  At the same point in the season last year, the average was .242.  Everyone knew the strike zone would change.  It had to be rewritten to accommodate the new robot umpires.  Veteran players like Cody Bellinger say all changes eventually even out with the game adjusting to a new norm.  An example is stolen bases, which increased nearly 50% when the pitch clock and limits on pickoff throws by pitchers were introduced three years ago.    https://apnews.com/article/abs-baseball-rising-walks-d91f6007fa1b0e69b8b586e992a469b3

In the minors – The Storm beat Visalia 8-7 in Game Two of a six game series last night.  Game Three is tonight at Lake Elsinore.

In the NFL – The 2026 draft begins today in Pittsburgh at 5p our time.  It’ll be televised live on ESPN, ABC and the NFL Network.  The Raiders have the first pick.  The Rams are projected to have the #17 pic thanks to a trade with Detroit.  The Chargers first pick will be #22.  Rounds 2 and 3 are tomorrow beginning at 4p.    https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2026/story/_/id/48550650/2026-nfl-mock-draft-peter-schrager-insider-intel-final-first-round-picks-predictions

Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders have approved the $81b buyout of the company by Paramount.  Including assumed debt, the deal is valued at $111b.  It still faces regulatory scrutiny with critics sounding the alarm about further consolidation in an industry that’s already controlled by just a few major players.  In a separate matter, Warner shareholders rejected a measure outlining post-merger payments for company executives.  https://apnews.com/article/warner-brothers-paramount-skydance-netflix-david-ellison-d52e8730ba894adf2ebb9a69646d323b

Stock in Spirit Aviation has gone from 27 cents on Monday to $1.62 yesterday on reports that the White House is seriously considering giving the bankrupt budget airline a half-billion-dollar loan in exchange for a majority stake.  Other businesses the Trump administration has taken a stake in were areas considered critical to national security, like minerals and mining, or tech leaders like Intel.  https://www.businessinsider.com/spirit-aviation-stock-news-white-house-deal-budget-airline-trump-2026-4

President Trump is expected to announce a deal today with drug maker Regeneron to lower the prices of current and future drugs on Medicaid and the White House discount drug site, TrumpRx.  The price for a cholesterol drug called Praluent would be $225.  It’s another of many so-called most-favored-nation deals Trump has been making to bring U.S. pharmaceutical prices in line with the lowest prices charged internationally.  Proposals went out from the White House to 17 major manufacturers.  Regeneron is the final one to strike a deal.  https://apnews.com/article/trump-white-house-regeneron-drug-pricing-mfn-bdacc3b7e47f4ba23e85bb14705073de

Escondido’s Stone Brewing Company is being sold for the second time in four years.  This time to a joint venture including Firestone Walker, makers of 805 Beer.  Stone pubs in Oceanside and at Liberty Station in San Diego will continue under the new owners.  The Escondido Tap Room and brewing facility is not included in the deal.  Sapporo USA will keep that to brew its own brand in this country.  Brewing of Stone will move to its new owner’s Paso Robles brewery. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/video/videos/escondidos-stone-brewing-being-sold-once-again/4013560/?amp=1

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said yesterday he would support a ban on junk food advertising on U.S. television.  He also implied he would want it to be voluntary by food companies, like it was when the smoking advertising ban on television and radio went into effect decades ago.  Food, beverage and restaurant companies spend almost $1.4b per year on advertising in the U.S.  More than 80% of it is for fast food, sugary drinks, candy and unhealthy snacks, according to the University of Connecticut’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health.  In a strategy document released last September, the Trump administration examined whether to limit food companies’ ability to market certain unhealthy foods to children.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/22/rfk-jr-says-he-would-support-a-potential-ban-on-junk-food-tv-ads.html

Convenience store company, Yesway had its initial public stock offering yesterday.  The chain, along with their recently acquired Allsup’s chain, known for its deep-fried burritos and chimichangas is making a dent in the fast-food market, especially at breakfast.  Yesway’s IPO raised $280m at $20 per share.  Chains like Wawa, Buc-ee’s and Casey’s General Stores have been winning over customers from conventional fast food chains with fresh-made food, low prices and convenience.  None of these chains are in California yet.  Buc-ee’s just opened one west of Phoenix in Goodyear, Arizona.  Yesway and Allsup have 448 stores in Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Oklahoma and the upper Midwest.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/04/22/yesway-ipo-yswy-starts-trading-on-the-nasdaq.html
