LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A 78-year old bicyclist was killed in crash on San Marcos Boulevard west of Rancho Santa Fe Road just after noon yesterday.  The driver of the white SUV remained at the scene.  San Marcos Boulevard was closed for investigation until 5p.  No other details released. https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/78-year-old-bicyclist-dies-after-collision-with-vehicle-san-marcos/4013375/

The California Attorney General and the San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians are suing the city of Poway for going forward with a 40-home housing development after discovering human remains and tribal cultural resources at the site.  In two separate complaints, state prosecutors and tribal attorneys say the city plowed ahead without any additional environmental review, as required under the California Environmental Quality Act, in spite of finding hundreds of pottery fragments, tools, arrowheads, and other historic artifacts, which the San Pasqual tribe says was likely a sacred site or possibly a Native village. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/california-sues-poway-and-housing-developer-over-handling-of-tribal-remains/509-c775844f-0e57-4ca0-9ac1-8150ba0a6650

Two housing developments totaling 200 units in Escondido are being prepared for a vote by City Council to become the first two of no more than four allowed changes to the General Plan this year.  Both projects were pulled from the general consent calendar at the council’s April 15 meeting for further discussion.  Developer Storm West wants to build houses on vacant land surrounded on three sides by industrial sites and on the fourth by a housing development in the city of San Marcos.  That plan calls for 62 attached and 20 detached townhomes.  The property must be rezoned from light industrial to Urban IV for the project to get built.  The other property is being promoted by developer, Warmington Residential at the intersection of Miller Avenue and West Citricado Parkway near I-15.  It will need to be rezoned from planned office to Urban III to make way for a proposed 126 attached townhomes. https://thecoastnews.com/escondido-reviews-housing-proposals-totaling-more-than-200-units/

Nearly 1k properties are being sold for unpaid taxes in Riverside County this week.  The auction begins tomorrow and ends April 28.  Details of properties and bidding procedures are at the county Assessor-Clerk-Recorder’s website.  A deposit and non-refundable $35 fee are required to bid.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/hundreds-properties-being-auctioned-week-riverside-county

The state legislature has again rejected a bid to overturn the 50-year moratorium on new nuclear power plants in California with the defeat of AB 2647.  That moratorium was part of California’s 1976 Nuclear Safeguards Act, which was upheld by the US Supreme Court in 1983.  The key provision is that no new nuclear fission reactors can be built until the federal government successfully develops a means to dispose of the high-level nuclear waste the reactors produce.  That condition remains unmet.  (Committee to Bridge the Gap media release)

Today is Earth Day, which was first organized on this day in 1970.  It is considered to be the start of an environmental movement that continues 56 years later.  Intertribal Earth Day was celebrated last Saturday at La Jolla campground.

Our part of the Earth here in Pala will have beautiful Spring weather for the rest of the week with a late-season chance of rain this weekend.  There were only a few scattered showers from yesterday’s storm front.  Other than Julian, Lake Cuyamaca and Ramona, most local areas had no measurable rain.  The full forecast is coming up. BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained ¾%.  The S&P 500 was up 8 tenths.  The Nasdaq rose 1 ¼%.  Gold traded $30.10 higher on the Comex, at $4,749.70 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained $2.70 to $92.37 a barrel, while international prices climbed back over $100 with Brent crude at $101.42 a barrel.

New attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz today are part of the reason for today’s higher crude prices.  Iranian state television reports there are now some ships in the custody of the Revolutionary Guard and being taken to Iranian ports.  That’s a new complication for efforts to resume peace talks including President Trump’s indefinite extension to the cease fire that had been set to expire today. https://apnews.com/article/us-iran-war-hormuz-israel-pakistan-ceasefire-april-22-2026-267230f7f32b436822484479313840f7

The latest AP-NORC poll shows President Trump’s approval rating on the economy has fallen to 30% in April, down from 38% in March.  Only about one fourth of those surveyed approve of his handling of the cost of living.  This is significant because Trump yesterday dismissed the Iran war as a “little journey” and called the more than one third jump in oil prices a positive compared to what he thought would happen – a stance that few consumers find comforting. www.apnews.com

Economists warn that if oil shipments from the Middle East remain constrained much longer, the effects will be felt much further than the gas pump.  Chinese manufacturers of plush toys have notified toy companies that the materials to make polyester, acrylic and other synthetic fibers are already costing them 10% to 15% more than before the Iran war.  And it’s not just toys.  According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the six major petrochemicals derived from crude oil and natural gas go into the making of more than 6k consumer products including anything containing plastics, waxes and rubber, as well as most retail packaging.  The experts are saying, if oil holds above $90 a barrel into the summer, cost pressures currently being absorbed at the manufacturing and distribution level will have to be passed on to consumers, kicking off a new round of inflation. https://apnews.com/article/iran-war-oil-consumer-products-petroleum-cdbcc14cca17d7db49b34e016adebac1

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Virginia voters narrowly passed a constitutional amendment yesterday to allow election redistricting by the state’s Democratic-led General Assembly.  That could increase the party’s chances of winning four additional U.S. House seats in November.  This was another defeat for President Trump who touched off a national redistricting battle last year when he urged the Texas Republican majority to redraw districts to help Republican candidates win in the mid-term elections.  The response was a burst of redistricting nationwide by both parties.  The Virginia referendum will now go to its State Supreme Court to decide whether the plan is legal.  Redistricting by voters in California last November survived a court challenge two months ago.   Together, California and Virginia could nullify Republican redistricting in Texas, Ohio, Missouri, and North Carolina. www.apnews.com

Since the 2024 election, Republicans have enjoyed what every party wants – control of the White House and both houses of Congress.  Such power is supposed to make changing or enacting laws easy.  But the Republican-led Congress hit historic lows for productivity last year.  The House of Representatives cast 362 votes last year, the second-lowest count in 25 years.  And only 64 bills became law.  The Department of Homeland Security, which employs more than a quarter million people has been shut down for 70 days because lawmakers can’t agree on how to restore funding.  Congress has ceded some of its powers to the White House by not pushing back when President Trump refused to spend funds they allocated.  Congress has also blocked Democratic efforts to end Trump’s authority to wage war with Iran, even though the Constitution gives Congress the exclusive right to declare war.  One thing Congress members are doing more of is scolding and punishing each other.  Three Congressional members tainted by scandal have resigned in the past two weeks, including California Representative Eric Swalwell, who as a result has ended his bid to become governor.  A Gallup poll released today shows Americans’ approval rating for Congress is now at just 10%.  Even the IRS is more popular. www.NYTimes.com

On this day in music history – April 22,

  • 1966, “Wild Thing” by the Troggs – formerly known as The Troglodytes was released in the U.S. by two different labels.  It’s the only song ever to hit #1 simultaneously for two competing companies.  The ATCO label version incorrectly credits Troggs lead singer Reg Presley as the songwriter.  He wrote the B-side “A Girl Like You” which also became a minor hit.  Wild Thing is actually a remake of a song written by Chip Douglas which failed to chart a year earlier when released by The Wild Ones.  The Troggs’ version hit #1.  Wild Thing is now one of the most covered songs in rock and roll history.
  • On the same day, at a Battle of the Bands in New Jersey, The Castiles with lead singer Bruce Springsteen placed third, earning them the bottom slot at a major concert the following week headlined by The Crystals, still riding high on the success of their early ‘60s hits “He’s a Rebel” and “Da Doo Ron Ron”.
  • In 1966, Disc & Music Echo magazine conducted a poll for the most popular member of The Monkees.  Davy Jones got 63% of the vote.  Mickey Dolenz 22%, Peter Tork 8%, and Mike Nesmith got 7%.
  • In 1972, Deep Purple’s “Machine Head” album hit #1 thanks to singles, “Smoke on the Water” and “Highway Star”.  It was their most commercially successful album and a major influence on early heavy metal
  • In 1978, Bob Marley and the Wailers performed at the One Love Peace Concert in Jamaica.  It was Marley’s first public appearance since being wounded in an assassination attempt 18 months earlier
  • In 1989, Madonna began the first of three weeks at #1 with “Like a Prayer”, her 7th #1 hit.
  • In 1991, The Dave Matthews Band played their first-ever live show at the Earth Day festival in Charlottesville, Virginia.
  • In 2001, Destiny’s Child was at #1 with “Survivor”.
  • In 2013, Richie Havens, the folk singer who gained fame opening the Woodstock Festival and playing for several hours including ad-libbing “Freedom”, a song he created on the spot when none of the following acts were ready died of a heart attack at age 72.

Born on this day …

  • In 1922, jazz composer, bass player and bandleader, Charles Mingus
  • In 1936, country singer, songwriter, session musician, and TV show host, Glen Campbell.  In addition to his own multiple top ten hits, he played on songs by Bobby Darin, Ricky Nelson, The Beach Boys, Elvis, Frank Sinatra and The Monkees

  • In 1948, folk singer Larry Groce, best known for the 1972 novelty song “Junk Food Junkie”
  • In 1950, Peter Frampton who played with The Herd and Humble Pie before achieving solo stardom in the mid-1970s
