A new solution for the lack of sand on Oceanside beaches could be “shovel-ready” by the fall of next year if funding and permitting falls into place.  The design for an artificial reef offshore between Tyson Street and Wisconsin Avenue is being finalized by a team at Oregon State University with a scale model being tested through thousands of wave cycles.  A report is expected next month.  The butterfly-shaped structure would be underwater 900 feet offshore.  Erosion has been a problem on the city’s beaches ever since the construction of jetties at Oceanside Harbor and Del Mar Beach on Camp Pendleton in 1942. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/oceanside-turns-to-artificial-reef-to-save-its-disappearing-beach

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up again.  The Dow gained 1%.  Share in Disney and Nvidia led the charge.  The S&P 500 rose 1.1%.  And the Nasdaq was up 1 ½%.  Gold shot up almost $127 on the Comex, trading at $4,694.80 an ounce.  The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures plunged $7.38 to $94.89 a barrel.

Today’s stock rise and crude oil futures decline is attributed to progress on peace with Iran.  It’s all based on word from President Trump that the Strait of Hormuz could be “open to all” if Iran accepts a reported agreement, the details of which the President did not reveal.  He did say that he is pausing “Project Freedom”, the U.S. operation to escort ships through the Strait, to allow time for the possible agreement to take effect.  This agreement is the latest in a series of what have so far proved to be nothing more than rumors regarding a possible end to the war with Iran.  Following a meeting with Iran’s foreign minister, China’s foreign minister called for a comprehensive ceasefire.  That’s significant because of how closely tied Iran and China are both economically and politically.  Meanwhile, major U.S. companies continue to turn in much stronger than expected profits for the start of 2026.  In the bond market, Treasury yields dropped significantly. https://apnews.com/article/stocks-markets-rates-iran-kospi-0da189a3d33b041087b7df6096e5c8ad

Retail gasoline prices jumped an average of 31 cents a gallon nationwide over the past week and are now 50% higher than they were before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran.  Gas station owners set pump prices.  So, there’s no direct connection between the war and gas prices.  But according to the Energy Information Administration, 51% of the price of gasoline is the cost of a barrel of crude oil.  That means pump prices generally follow crude oil prices.  The match between crude oil prices and pump prices isn’t exact, but it’s there.  The closure of the Strait of Hormuz triggered the largest crude oil supply disruption in history.  That caused crude oil prices to skyrocket because Iran had been moving an unusually high amount of oil to global markets, moderating prices.  https://apnews.com/article/gasoline-oil-war-iran-strait-of-hormuz-0e5b61be4a4c8a8a077ed5ff6f84c0ce

Oil is also causing discontent in Canada, where the province of Alberta is taking steps to secede from the country.  Stay Free Alberta this week submitted over 300k signatures to force a referendum vote.  That’s almost twice as many as needed.  The group’s main issue with Canada is that national green initiatives have wrecked the region’s oil producing and exporting economy to the tune of billions of dollars.  A ballot measure could be in place as soon as October if it survives court challenges.  Polls show the separatist movement is still a minority, but growing. www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

AMC Theaters is partnering with Arena One to bring live concerts to theater audiences.  The links will be two-way, so that performers will be able to hear theater audience reactions.  Ticket prices will range from $40 to $75 depending on the artist and market.  More than 300 AMC locations in 89 U.S. cities will be programmed for these concerts, which launch in June. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/05/amc-arena-one-live-concerts.html

Brain rot from doomscrolling has replaced tooth decay from candy as a parent’s top concern about their kids.  Recent court cases and Congressional hearings are holding social media companies’ feet to the fire as the average US teen scrolling time now exceeds five hours a day and evidence is mounting that apps are a contributing factor to the increase in mental health issues among those teens.  Even teens themselves increasingly say it’s true.  According to the Pew Research Center, in 2024, 48% of kids age 13 to 17 said social media had a negative effect on them.  Two years earlier, it had only been 32%.  Not only are Meta and others losing court cases, they’re also being banned.  Last year, Australia became the first county to completely ban social media usage for kids under 16.  Austria and Denmark are preparing to implement similar bans and dozens of other countries are considering it.  There’s a lot at stake, just as there was when big tobacco came under fire for not admitting nicotine was addictive and that tobacco causes cancer.  According to the Harvard School of Public Health, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, TikTok, and X made $11b selling ads targeting kids and teens in 2022.  www.morningbrew.com
