LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

An accident on Highway 76 east of Magee Road closed both lanes about halfway up the grade this morning.  First reported just before 8:30a, drivers in the area report the road was still closed at 12:30p with many turning around.  Sigalert.com reported one-lane controlled traffic at 1p with the CHP removing the item from its incident page about the same time.  No details available regarding vehicles or injuries.

Investigators from multiple agencies have determined that there were a total of 26 separate fires ignited along a 12-mile stretch of Highway 76 and I-15 on Saturday.  The first was reported around 11:30a.  Most were very small, but the two largest totaled about 20 acres.  All were controlled by 2:30p through a coordinated effort by units from eleven local fire departments.  Aerial water drops had to be delayed because of too many civilians in the area – some attempting to put out the smaller fires themselves.  The cause remains under investigation.  There were no injuries.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/04/30/news/twenty-six-fires-spark-along-sr-76-395-and-15-in-the-rainbow-fallbrook-and-bonsall-area/81820.html

A suspected malfunctioning lawn mower is believed to have caused a fire Sunday afternoon on Dorthea Avenue in Fallbrook.  About a quarter acre of brush burned, threatening structures for a time.  Reported at 1:45p, it was controlled about 20 minutes later.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/04/30/news/firefighters-halt-forward-progression-of-dorothea-fire/81824.html

A single vehicle crash resulted in a downed power pole that injured one person yesterday morning near Aguanga.  The crash occurred shortly before 7:30a on Highway 79 at Caprise Road when a silver SUV carrying four people struck the power pole, injuring one person, who was transported to a hospital.

Labor Department numbers released today show job openings unchanged in March. They’d been up about 1% the previous month.  Layoffs rose in March, but hiring improved.  More Americans quit their jobs, indicating they have confidence in their prospects.  Factors causing uncertainty about current labor trends include the sudden jump in oil prices and a possibility that there are fewer people competing for work due to the Trump Administration’s immigration crackdown.  The Labor Department’s April jobs report is due out Friday. https://apnews.com/article/job-openings-economy-trump-iran-war-hiring-93d758277fc30efef1bcb22341508621

California insurance regulators are seeking millions of dollars in fines against State Farm and a suspension from writing new policies in the state after an investigation found the company violated state law in the handling of claims from the Palisades and Eaton Fires.  Initiated following client complaints, it was determined the state’s largest home insurer delayed and mishandled claims, underpaid and buried policyholders in red tape.  The investigation looked at 200 random claims filed with State Farm and found nearly 400 violations.  State Farm received more than 11k total claims – about one third of all claims filed for everything from smoke damage to total loss.  The two fires destroyed 16k structures and killed 31 people.  Final penalties for State Farm will be recommended by an administrative law judge and set by the Insurance Commission. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/california-penalizes-state-farm-over-its-handling-of-insurance-claims-after-los-angeles-wildfires

Shares of eBay are soaring as GameStop’s Ryan Cohen attempts a $56b takeover of the much larger company to create a challenger to Amazon.  GameStop’s 1,600 U.S. stores could become drop-off and shipping locations for a new retail juggernaut.  One proposal calls for live sales broadcasts from GameStop locations featuring eBay products.  GameStop’s offer is $125 per share in cash and stock for a $55b valuation of eBay.  GameStop began acquiring eBay shares in February and currently has a 5% stake.  eBay says it has not had any talks with Cohen about a possible buyout.  Cohen, who has been CEO of GameStop since 2023 and owns 9% of that company, would be CEO of the combined company and only be compensated based on total performance of the two.  So far this week, eBay shares are up 7%, while GameStop shares are down almost 3%. https://apnews.com/article/gamestop-ebay-meme-amazon-9b689c70c6624d550c3739d0578a9f3c

This year’s Pulitzer Prizes for journalism have been announced.  Among them, the Washington Post won for public service for its scrutiny of the Trump administration’s uneven and often opaque overhaul of federal agencies.  Associated Press won for international reporting about surveillance.  The Miami Herald’s Julie K. Brown was given special recognition for her reporting nearly a decade ago that drew attention to Jeffrey Epstein’s abuses.  It’s been a challenging year for traditional journalism with the Post cutting a third of its staff, CBS News closing its nearly a century-old radio service, and AP offering buyouts to over 120 staff journalists.  CBS parent company Paramount’s acquisition of CNN raises questions about the future of those networks.  Meanwhile, President Trump continues to attack, and in some cases sue, outlets whose news coverage he doesn’t like. https://apnews.com/article/pulitzer-journalism-coverage-db1306a7a4a5fb5160eccdd1b540f2c9

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, the number one new movie was no surprise.  After all the hype, it would have been a surprise if “The Devil Wears Prada 2” didn’t top the list.  The sequel sold $76.7m worth of tickets in its debut weekend.  Last week’s #1, the biopic “Michael” did about $20m more in its debut last week, but dropped 44% this week to $54.4m – good for second place.  “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” sold another $12.1m in its 5th week in theaters.  “Hokum” and “Animal Farm” debuted in 5th and 6th place on half as many screens with $6.4m and $3.3m respectively.  “Deep Water” opened in 8th place with $2.1m.  The total attendance for the weekend’s top ten movies was second only to Easter weekend.  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W18/
