Jobless claim applications rose last week, but are still at historically low levels, according to today’s Labor Department report.  200k Americans filed for jobless benefits in the week ending May 2.  That’s 5k fewer than analysts were expecting.  This figure is considered to be close to a real-time indicator of the health of the job market.  Last week, the government reported that a key inflation measure jumped in March, the latest sign that the war in Iran is driving the cost of living higher through a nearly 50% spike in global oil prices.  The March jobs report is due out tomorrow.    https://apnews.com/article/unemployment-benefits-jobless-claims-layoffs-labor-3911f6ccb17ec427f2db013daf4570e5

As the result of a $250m settlement of a class action suit against Apple for false advertising connected to Apple Intelligence software updates, some iPhone owners can get cash payments of up to $95 from Apple.  The specific claim by a group of Northern California consumers was that a marketing campaign promoted features that did not yet exist, misleading them into buying their devices.  The settlement covers 37m Apple devices sold between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025.  That includes all iPhone 16 models and the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max.  Owners are eligible for a payment of at least $25 per device and could be as high as $95 depending on how many claims are filed.  Customers will be notified by mail or email about the settlement website. https://apnews.com/article/apple-iphone-siri-artificial-intelligence-ai-8613d1681d1ee9d6fb00be8e0f82c89b

As the implementation of a new law allowing high-density housing near certain transit stations draws closer, affected North County cities are considering their options to retain as much local control as possible while awaiting clear guidance on where the law applies.  Senate Bill 79, introduced by state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom in October, would permit multi-family residential development with heights of up to 85 feet and densities of up to 120 units per acre at sites within a half mile of major transit stops.  The new up-zoning law goes into effect July 1 in counties with at least 15 passenger rail stations.  San Diego County and seven others meet that criteria. https://thecoastnews.com/north-county-cities-await-clarification-on-sb-79/
