Costco reported increased net sales for its fiscal third quarter which ended May 10, including a significant increase in gasoline sales as fuel prices spiked during the Iran war.  And the company has begun submitting tariff refund claims, which it expects to receive on a rolling basis moving forward. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/28/costco-cost-q3-2026-earnings.html

The President says good prices are going down.  But the April gain in grocery prices were the largest in 2 1/2 years.  The increase comes after much larger, painful spikes that took place in 2021-22 under former president Joe Biden. Grocery costs soared nearly 28% from just before the pandemic in February 2020 until Trump took office in January 2025.  In touting food prices coming under control in a Truth Social post yesterday, President Trump focused only on nine specific items without looking at overall grocery costs.  He said that avocado prices have fallen 19%, cheese has dropped 5.6%, fresh berries and butter have dropped 13%, olive oil prices are down 16%, while chicken breasts are down 2.4% and eggs 90%.  But overall, food prices increased 2.9%, which is only modestly above the 20-year average of 2.6%.  We’d gotten used to more stable food prices, because in the decade before the pandemic, grocery prices rose an average of just 1.1% a year. https://apnews.com/article/trump-food-prices-cheaper-fact-check-cd9cc431819a1bb3564bc616b1e1cc03
