Protestors gathered at Brotherton Road and Centre City Parkway in Escondido Saturday urging motorists to boycott Talk of the Town Car Wash. They claimed the business donated to Mayor Dane White’s reelection campaign, which is tied to the larger issue of the city in January renewing its $67k contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, allowing ICE to use the city’s firing range. According to the city, only Homeland Security Investigations, a division within ICE has been using the range – not ICE’s Enforcement and Removal division. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/demonstrators-gather-outside-local-car-wash-to-protest-escondidos-contract-with-dhs
With a number of small fires already making headlines this Spring, and a human-caused 10k acre fire currently burning on Santa Rosa Island off the coast of Santa Barbara, the City of Oceanside has tightened fireworks regulations for this summer. The city council has unanimously approved icreasing fines and using drone enforcement to crack down on illegal fireworks. Although even sparklers are illegal, it’s the large exploding fireworks that cause the most trouble with hundreds of complaints coming in every summer holiday. The revised city ordinance has fines beginning at $1k and with penalties for property owners depending on where the fireworks were set off. Enforcement will not be limited just to holidays. https://www.10news.com/oceanside-to-target-illegal-fireworks-with-fines-drones

The Justice Department today announced a $1.7b “Anti-Weaponization Fund” to compensate the President’s Republican allies who believe they were mistreated by the Biden administration Justice Department. The fund is part of a deal to resolve President Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS over leaking his tax returns. That suit was officially dropped today. The highly unorthodox resolution is claimed by the administration to be a fair and legal redress for wrongs done to Trump’s allies before he returned to office. Democrats and government watchdogs say the unprecedented move is corrupt, unjustly enriches those close to the President using taxpayer money, and opens the door to meritless claims of political persecution. https://apnews.com/article/trump-lawsuit-irs-leak-3729de38770b558be01712a143437bf8
Vancouver, BC-based athleticwear company Lululemon is going public with its battle against a takeover by activist founder Chip Wilson. It released a letter to shareholders today saying Wilson has “outdated perspectives” and “troubling conflicts of interest” that will wreck the company’s turnaround plans. Wilson initiated a proxy battle last year, leading to settlement talks that have now failed. Wilson left the company’s board a decade ago after blaming customers for a recall of its trademark black pants and has been attacking the company for years. He recently put forward three opposing board nominees to regain influence within the company. The board election is coming up in June. Wilson is Lululemon’s largest individual shareholder at just under 9% of the company. The company announced last month that Heidi O’Neill will be the new CEO. She comes from 30 years at Nike, where she is being blamed by some investors for Nike’s current challenges. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/18/lululemon-proxy-war-with-chip-wilson-goes-public-sets-annual-meeting.html
The National Association of Homebuilders reports that in spite of high mortgage rates, rising gas prices and general economic uncertainty as the Iran war continues, that builders are feeling slightly better about their business. Homebuilder sentiment rose 3 points last month after plunging in April. Economists had expected it to remain the same. The index was 34 one year ago when rates were hovering around 7%. It’s 37 now with rates this week at 6.65% for the average 30-year fixed rate mortgage. Sentiment is considered negative any time the index is below 50. Fewer builders were cutting prices this month. The use of sales incentives was up very slightly. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/18/may-homebuilder-sentiment-improves.html

Walmart and Amazon are competing to speed up deliveries of online orders to rural areas of the country. Bank analysts say that underserved market could be worth up to a trillion dollars in annual sales. The same technology that enables people to do office work from anywhere is making it easier for the nation’s two biggest retailers to get merchandise to them more efficiently. Last year, Amazon invested $4b to bring same-day delivery to 4k smaller towns and rural communities. CEO Andy Jassy says the number of customers receiving same-day deliveries doubled last year. The Big Two aren’t the only retailers looking to improve rural delivery service. Dollar General now offers same-day delivery out of 17k of its 20k stores with 80% of those orders arriving in an hour or less. Tractor Supply is nearly doubling its number of delivery hubs to 375, covering more than half of its stores. Meanwhile, FedEx, UPS and the Postal Service are scaling back or slowing down deliveries to some rural areas to cut costs and concentrate on more profitable business. https://apnews.com/article/rural-areas-fast-delivery-walmart-amazon-9394ec7e7abcccb892f71e57f47541dc
