LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A Temecula man killed himself during a standoff with deputies in a parking lot near Pechanga Casino yesterday afternoon.  66-year old Derek Arnett had been a person of interest in the disappearance Tuesday of 61-year old Frank Torres from Pauma Valley.  Family and friends have been unable to locate him for the past two days.  Authorities located his vehicle abandoned near a Temecula park and Riverside Sheriff’s Central Homicide was notified.  For unknown reasons, authorities followed Arnett’s vehicle into a parking lot near Pechanga Parkway, where he parked.  When deputies reached him, he had injuries that appeared to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.  The whereabouts of Torres are still unknown.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-man-connected-missing-person-killed-himself-during-standoff-sheriff

The Vista City Council has agreed to pursue a phased construction schedule for long-delayed improvements to the Emerald Drive corridor.  The major crosstown connector from Olive Avenue to West Drive has had a sizable increase in speeding and traffic collisions over the years with residents asking for traffic calming measures as a solution.  The Emerald Drive project will add six roundabouts at Timothy Place, Jonathan Place, Galbar Street, Chasin Street, Ravine Road and Silver Fox Lane as well as ADA sidewalks and ramps, high visibility pedestrian crossings, landscaped medians, bus pullouts and bike lane striping.  Total cost is estimated at $12m.  Only $2.8m is currently funded.  Another $4m grant is being sought for next year.  So, the project is being broken into six phases.  The first will cover two permanent and one temporary roundabout and is considered shovel-ready.  The city hopes to fund and complete all of the phases over the next five years. https://thecoastnews.com/vista-begins-first-phase-of-emerald-drive-complete-streets-project/

Tri-City Hospital has unveiled a redesigned emergency department.  The newly updated space represents the largest project in the history of the Tri-City Hospital Foundation and was supported through a $5.2 million community fundraising effort involving local donors, businesses and philanthropic partners.  Community support helped make possible a major modernization effort focused on improving both the patient experience and the efficiency of emergency care delivery throughout the facility.  Tri-City Medical Center’s Emergency Department serves as one of the region’s key centers for emergency and acute care, including treatment for heart attack and stroke patients. https://thecoastnews.com/tri-city-expands-emergency-care-for-north-county/

Two of Golden State’s assistant coaches won’t be returning next season.  Head coach Steve Kerr will be back.  But Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse are leaving with the expiration of their contracts.  Stotts’ three-decade coaching career includes nine seasons as head coach at Portland.  He leaves the Warriors on good terms and is open to new NBA head coaching opportunities.  Stackhouse came to Golden State two years ago after five season as college head coach at Vanderbilt.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48774052/sources-warriors-assistants-stotts-stackhouse-return

No sooner did Seattle’s Cal Raleigh break out of his hitting slump, he’s now on the 10-day injured list for the first time in his six Major League seasons.  He left Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to Houston in the 8th inning after apparently aggravating a right-side injury.  He’d missed three games earlier this month with soreness.  The MVP runner up is currently batting .161 with seven home runs this season. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/48770453/mariners-cal-raleigh-oblique-lands-il-first

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down, giving back all of yesterday’s gains.  The Dow fell 8 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down 9 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was off by 1.1%.  Gold plunged $137.10 on the Comex to $4,548.20 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures shot up nearly 4%, or $3.84 to $105.01 a barrel.

Hoping to salvage the mid-term election in November as inflation-weary voters begin to think a change is called for, President Trump and top American CEOs left a more self-reliant China today with few deals to show for it.  Trump said they’d secured an order for 200 planes from Boeing, but then waffled, saying he thinks there’s a commitment.  China has not confirmed the deal.  And Trump got lectured by President Xi Jinping that relations would worsen if the U.S. got too involved in Taiwan, a self-governing island that China claims as its own territory.  The visit was big on pageantry, but no major deals were announced on trade or policy.  Trump says Xi has committed to withholding military equipment from Iran, that Beijing will buy oil from the US, and that China wants the Strait of Hormuz reopened.  Both leaders had positive things to say about the meetings and say they ended on a cordial note.  https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cvgz8qverzqt

The Federal Reserve transitions from the leadership of Jerome Powell to that of Kevin Warsh today.   At President Trump’s behest, Warsh is expected to push for interest rate cuts, even though the Federal Reserve is supposed to operate independently without political influence.  That’s the main reason Powell will stick around until the end of his term as board member in 2028.  He is of the opinion that interest rate cuts in the current inflationary scenario would only serve the short term and cause uncontrollable economic damage down the road. https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/5879153-powell-warsh-fed-transition/

The Big 3 US automakers have cut a combined total of more than 20k salaried jobs in the U.S. over the past three years.  That’s 19% of their combined workforces.  The reasons vary by automaker, but are mostly tied to evolving technology – particularly the rise of AI.  Ford CEO Jim Farley said last July that “Artificial intelligence is going to replace literally half of all white-collar workers in the U.S.”  GM has gone from a high of 58k white collar workers in 2022 to 47k last year.  Just this week, it announced another cut of 500 to 600 salaried workers worldwide.  Meanwhile, Toyota reports adding 31% to its American white-collar workforce in the past five years, now totaling 47,500 people – almost the same as GM.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/15/general-motors-ford-stellantis-job-cuts-ai.html

A jury has ordered Boeing to pay $49.5m to the family of a 737 Max crash victim.  24-year old Samya Stumo’s is one of the last remaining cases from two deadly crashes that killed a total of 346 people within months of each other in 2019.  Boeing had already admitted responsibility and struck a deal with the Justice Department to avoid criminal prosecution, so the trial was only about how much compensation the company owed.  https://www.npr.org/2026/05/14/nx-s1-5822441/jury-award-737-max-crash-ethiopian-airlines

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Brown, the action thriller “In the Grey” with Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal, the comedy horror thriller “Obsession”, the biographical crime drama “The Wizard of the Kremlin” starring Jude Law as Vladimir Putin, the animated sci-fi drama “Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe”, and the 25th anniversary re-release of “Shrek”.  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/calendar/?ref_=bo_nb_we_tab

With legislation currently in Congress to suspend the federal tax on gasoline to October 1, what can consumers expect if it passes?  Not a lot, really.  The federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon.  But if the bill passes, gas won’t suddenly become 18 cents cheaper, because the tax is collected at the wholesale level.  It’s only hoped that oil companies will pass along the savings.  Suppliers may hang on to some of the discount as profit.  One economist at the University of Pennsylvania says about 72% of the temporary tax cut will actually reach consumers.  That’s about 13.2 cents per gallon.  Four months of that for the average household filling a 15-gallon tank once a week is about $35 total.  It’ll cost the government $8.3b in revenue.  The stakes are slightly higher if the federal diesel tax is suspended.  That’s 24.4 cents per gallon and would add another $3b to the revenue shortfall.  It could be made up from the general fund, but that would boost the national debt.  Eventually, there would be a consequence. https://apnews.com/article/gas-tax-oil-inflation-trump-90de4425d546a86e60901c1aecd87680
