The war in Iran seems no closer to an end with Iran responding to the U.S. proposal over the weekend. Iran demanded an end to sanctions, total control of the Strait of Hormuz, war reparations, and the release of stolen assets. President Trump posted on Truth Social in all caps, (which he usually does) “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE” and now says the Iran cease-fire is on “life support.” www.morningbrew.com
President Trump will attend a two-day summit meeting in Beijing beginning Thursday. Tariffs, technology and Taiwan are likely topics. But the most important reason for the confab may be that China is a key trading partner with Iran. Several U.S. business leaders are likely to be part of the entourage, including Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg. www.morningbrew.com
Trump said today that he will move to suspend the federal tax on gasoline to help Americans with the surging price of gas due to the war. Congress would have to approve the change. Members from both houses have been pushing for it. According to the Automobile Club, the national average price for a gallon of regular today is $4.52. Before the war, it was just under $3. https://apnews.com/article/trump-gas-tax-high-prices-iran-war-85313468d583c40b79c59e34d8186ee7

A year ago, Intel sold almost 10% of itself to the government after falling on hard times. Since then, semiconductor, or chip demand due to AI has caused its stock to soar 239% so far this year. American storage disk company, Sandisk is up 558%. And South Korea’s Samsung surpassed a market cap of $1 trillion last week. That and main Korean competitor SK Hynix now account for more than 40% of the Korean Composite Stock Price Indexes, or KOSPI, which is up 78% this year and is now bigger than the Canadian or British stock market. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 is up 8%. While some market watchers are worried the chip market may be creating a bubble, others say this is different. The Wall Street Journal noted that the dot com bubble burst nearly 20 years ago was due to a bunch of high-flying tech stocks that didn’t really have any earnings. This time, it’s companies like Micron with a projected $77b profit this year and Samsung, who just reported an 8-times increase in first quarter profits, which is more than their entire year’s profits last year. www.morningbrew.com

Health experts are questioning the CDC’s response to the cruise ship hantavirus outbreak … or it’s lack of response. They’re saying the CDC’s diminished role in this outbreak indicates the agency is no longer the force in international health, nor the protector of domestic health it once was. It was only Friday that the CDC notified U.S. doctors of the possibility of imported cases of this strain of the disease, and deployed a team to the Canary Islands, where the infected cruise ship was scheduled to arrive yesterday to meet the American passengers. A second team will go to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska where the group will be quarantined. www.apnews.com
