Two Temecula Valley school district trustees are getting community backlash for comments they made about Temecula Valley High School water polo players displaying Speedos as underwear at a school baseball game.  It happened as a diversion in a social media thread discussing a parent survey on the school’s dress code.  Deleted posts allegedly had governing board members Dr. Joseph Komrosky and Jen Wiersma commenting to each other, mentioning “Chippendale dancers” and “OnlyFans crew.”  Wiersma deleted her Instagram post the next morning.  Both have apologized. But families in the Temecula school district have continued to talk about it.  Both board members are up for reelection this year. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-school-board-trustees-face-fallout-comparing-teen-athletes-strippers

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were slightly mixed.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was just barely positive.  The S&P 500 fell 8 tenths of a percent.  The Nasdaq was down 1 ½%.  Gold gained $10.20 on the Comex, trading at $4,722.10 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.11 at $95.92 a barrel.

The U.S. Labor Department revealed surprisingly strong jobs numbers for April today.  The 115k new jobs last month were nearly double forecasters’ expectations.  But it was still down sharply from the 185k new jobs created in March.  The unemployment rate remained at a low 4.3%.  It’s been within a tenth or two of that level for nearly two years.  The Iran war and tariffs that have proven to be less than originally feared have yet to significantly impact labor.  Aa an economist at Fitch Ratings put it, “The labor market is not booming, but it is proving harder to break than many feared.” https://apnews.com/article/jobs-economy-unemployment-trump-iran-war-2cf46bfbf7748403ea0245100af45504

The University of Michigan released its latest Survey of Consumers today.  Surging gas prices have sent it to a new low of 48.2 – almost 8% lower than one year ago and 3.2% lower than last month’s previous record low.  Inflation fears are at the heart of the decline.  One third of those surveyed mentioned gas prices.  Another one third mentioned tariffs. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/08/consumer-sentiment-falls-to-fresh-record-low-in-may-as-surging-gas-prices-hit-outlook.html

Yesterday, a panel of federal judges found that the 10% across-the-board tariff that President Trump issued in February after the Supreme Court struck down many of his earlier tariff attempts is also illegal. The levy rested on Section 122 of the International Trade Act of 1974, an obscure provision that had never been used in the way the Trump administration attempted.  Officials anticipated that the plan might not work, according to the New York Times, but hoped it would last until at least July.  The administration is expected to appeal. www.morningbrew.com

The Trump administration has reached a proposed settlement in the antitrust case against a data-sharing company for the meatpacking industry that’s claimed to have driven up grocery prices.  Initially begun during the Biden administration, the Justice Department is claiming a victory in restoring competitive pricing in the meat industry that should lower food costs for consumers.  The case against Indiana-based Agri Stats claimed that non-public information shared by meat processors allowed them to inflate prices charged to restaurants, grocers and other wholesale markets who didn’t have access to Agri Stats’ data.  The settlement would require the data be shared with buyers. https://apnews.com/article/justice-department-antitrust-meatpacking-5a15ca4dddb5c9e90b9af2505c101923
