LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

At Tuesday’s Temecula Valley School board meeting, the mother of one of the water polo team members at Temecula Valley High made fun of by two members of the board lashed out, calling for their resignations.  The team coach also said in a statement he was “highly disappointed” in the board comparing players wearing only their team Speedos at a school baseball game to Chippendale dancers and OnlyFans.  Sharon Sardina became aware of board president Joseph Komrosky and member Jennifer Wiersma’s comments after being alerted to a social media post two weeks ago.  Though the post was removed the next day and both board members tried to explain away the comments, Instagram responders continued to be critical of the two board members.  Sardina says the issue is now “two adults who have taken it to the next level and it’s sexual harassment at this point.”  Komrosky and Wiersma would not engage with Sardina or anyone else on the subject at Tuesday’s meeting, pending a talk with lawyers.   https://www.newsbreak.com/los-angeles-times-521565/4649101050706-image-of-water-polo-players-in-speedos-sparks-feud-mom-demands-socal-school-officials-resign

Seattle’s Cal Raleigh had the league’s longest current hitless streak going into Tuesday’s game in Houston.  So, on the advice of a teammate, he showered in full uniform after Monday night’s game.  It apparently worked.  He had two singles in Tuesday’s 10-2 rout of the Astros – his first hits since April 27.  No word on whether he’ll continue the shower ritual or if just the one time washed off all the bad juju. https://apnews.com/article/cal-raleigh-hit-mariners-5021cb00a76d78166a622b26c119f705

President Trump was quick to report that negotiations in China have led to an agreement for that country to buy 200 Boeing aircraft.  Market analysts had expected more – maybe as many as 500.  It’s been nearly a decade since Boeing won any Chinese order for aircraft over European competitor Airbus. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/14/china-boeing-order-airplanes-737-max-trump-says.html

The President’s choice to become the new chairman of the Federal Reserve, Kevin Warsh was confirmed by the Senate yesterday.  Trump had consistently attacked current Fed chair Jerome Powell, whom he appointed in his first term for not lowering interest rates, which Trump thinks will boost the economy.  In an unusual move, Powell has said he will remain on the Federal Reserve board through the end of his term in 2028.  That could make it difficult for Warsh to convince the rest of the board to lower rates – a move that seems even less likely in the face of rising inflation. https://apnews.com/article/federal-reserve-kevin-warsh-jerome-powell-interest-rates-95ccceb935f5c6ebc3b6a4528fd3cbcb

Honda today posted its first annual loss in the 70 years the company has been publicly traded.  And it was electric vehicles that caused it.  Although the high price of oil is now causing people to once again be interested in EV’s, Honda had to take a big write-off on the $9b it spent to restructure its electric vehicle business in the face of weaker-than-expected consumer demand the last several years.  The company is scrapping its goal of having EVs make up one fifth of new car sales by 2030, as well as targeting a full shift to electric or fuel-cell vehicles by 2040.  Honda is also indefinitely suspending its plans to invest $11b to produce EVs and batteries in Canada.  The company’s bright spot right now is booming motorcycle business in Brazil and India.  https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/honda-books-first-annual-loss-hit-by-hefty-ev-charge-2026-05-14/

Biogen will advance an experimental Alzheimer’s disease drug to late-stage testing in spite of disappointing results in its Stage 2 trial.  The drug targets the protein, tau, which is associated with the memory-robbing disease.  It’s been shown to slow cognitive decline at its lowest dose, but failed to show better response at higher doses.  Two existing Alzheimer’s drugs already on the market target a different protein, called amyloid.  Rival drug maker Eli Lilly is also studying drugs that target tau. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/14/biogen-alzheimers-drug-moves-to-late-stage-trial.html

One year short of its 100th birthday, Kool-Aid is launching a line of electrolyte powder drink packets with no artificial dyes or sugar to help reverse slumping sales of its iconic brand.  The new hydration product is part of parent company Kraft Heinz’s broader plan at modernizing and taking advantage of the exploding U.S. market for powdered drink concentrates.  A lot of that has been single-serve electrolyte sticks.  Competitors include Gatorade and Propel.  Kraft-Heinz research shows many consumers find many current offerings of electrolyte drinks to be too salty or bitter.  Kool-Aid Hydration will be marketed at $4.99 for six concentrate sticks.  That’s several dollars less than the same thing from Gatorade and Liquid I.V.  It also targets younger adults with the Kool-Aid brand.   https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/13/kool-aid-kraft-heinz-electrolytes-artificial-dyes.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The cruise ship outbreak of hantavirus has people worried about the possibility of another global health scare.  Experts are saying there is little to fear about another pandemic.  But it does raise concerns over how well equipped the U.S. is to respond to infectious disease threats.  On Tuesday, the World Health Organization reported 11 cases linked to the shipboard outbreak.  Nine were confirmed, including three deaths.  As of yesterday, no Americans have tested positive.  Other passengers are being monitored, including 18 in the U.S. in Omaha and Atlanta.  A few others not connected with the cruise are being evaluated for possible exposure in several states.  There is no treatment for hantavirus.  But shares in Moderna rallied 12% recently on news that drug maker was conducting early research on a vaccine to protect against it.  Unlike Covid-19, the specific Andes strain of hantavirus currently in the headlines does not easily spread between people, so widespread infection is unlikely.  The Andes strain is the only one that can spread from human to human.  Health experts say there could be additional cases, but most will be among passengers from that ship because hantavirus has a long incubation period. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/14/hantavirus-cruise-ship-outbreak-where-is-it-what-to-know.html

With the closing of the window for competitive exhibit entries at this year’s San Diego County Fair, there has been an overall one third increase in participants compared with 2025.  Leading the increase is woodworking with half again more entries as last year.  There are 38% more photography entries, 44% more fine arts participants, and 24% more Home Arts entries.  Competing for the blue ribbon at the San Diego County Fair has been a tradition since the first Fair in 1880.  It’s one of the main draws at the Fair, which opens this year on June 10.  This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Fair,” celebrating the joy of reading, storytelling and imagination.  Rez Radio’s Eric Ortega will be broadcasting live from the Fair’s Del Mar Arena Sunday, June 14 for Native American Heritage Day.  The remote broadcast and all Rez Radio programming can be heard worldwide via live streaming.  (SDFair media release)
