A major accident involving an overturned big rig blocked southbound lanes of the 5 freeway in Camp Pendleton early this morning. It happened around 1:45a at the Aliso Creek Rest Area. The truck swerved across several lanes, colliding with the guard rail and overturning. Two other vehicles hit the truck. The truck driver suffered major non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a hospital. The driver of a Honda CR-V sustained minor injuries. All southbound and one northbound lane remained closed until 7a, when just two southbound lanes reopened. The other two are still closed with southbound I-5 traffic backed up to the truck scales. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/big-rig-crashes-blocks-southbound-i-5-lanes-near-camp-pendleton-051326

A man who had been deported four times before striking and killing an 11-year old boy with his vehicle in Escondido last year pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run Friday. 44-year old Hector Amador Balderas caused public debate with federal and state officials over his immigration status. On November 26 of last year, 11-year old Aiden Antonio Torres de Paz ran into the street near East Washington Avenue and Hickory Street chasing a soccer ball and was struck by Balderas’ vehicle. He died Thanksgiving morning at Rady Children’s Hospital. Balderas turned himself in a few days later. A petition opposing the proposed Golden Pacific Powerlink project through Temecula was launched over the weekend. It had 1,200 signatures as of Tuesday, when SDG&E held the first of its virtual open houses for the 500-kilovolt transmission line on nearly 200 foot tall towers from the Imperial Valley through Anza-Borrego State Park and into Riverside County roughly along highway 79 through De Luz Heights and Camp Pendleton, ending at a new substation just north of San Onofre. Residents, city and tribal officials oppose the route through wildfire-prone lands. https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-pushes-back-against-proposed-high-voltage-power-line-route

The league’s first openly gay player, Jason Collins has died of brain cancer at the age of 47. He’d served as a global ambassador for the sport since retiring from playing. He’d been diagnosed with one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer in November and had traveled to Singapore over the winter for experimental treatments not approved in the U.S. They were effective enough for him to attend the All Star Game and a game at his alma mater, Stanford. Since then, the cancer returned. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48753479/jason-collins-dies-47
In the NHL playoffs – The Golden Knights topped the visiting Ducks 3-2 in overtime last night and now lead the 2nd round series three games to two. Same score for Buffalo over Montreal with that series now tied at two. Tonight, the Wild play a must-win game in Denver with the Avalanche leading that series three games to one.

Companies are beginning to receive tariff refunds after the Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional. The first wave began being going out yesterday. President Trump says he will fight having to pay tariffs back. One toymaker, Basic Fun says the refunds so far have only been 5% of the company’s claim. The Labor Department reported today that producer prices rose 6% from this time last year. The Producer Price Index – which tracks inflation before it hits consumers, was up 1.4% in April. That’s the biggest monthly gain in more than four years and way above economist expectations. Core prices without food and energy were up 1% since March and 5.2% from April 2025. Inflation is accelerating at a time when Americans are already frustrated by the high cost of living. That will make affordability a key issue in the November mid-term election as the Republican party tries to maintain its majority in the Senate and House of Representatives. https://apnews.com/article/inflation-consumers-iran-energy-trump-3cbd24e5e977c8d5f4518ece41ac61d8
United Airlines flight attendants okayed a new five-year labor contract that will provide 30k United employees with pay raises for the first time in nearly six years. The average raise will be 31% and include $741m in back pay. The contract also includes boarding pay, meaning paid hours will now include time while passengers are boarding. For years, flight attendant pay didn’t begin until the plane was loaded and the doors closed. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/12/united-airlines-flight-attendants-contract.html

With “The Late Show” winding down next week, Stephen Colbert and fellow late night talk show hosts, John Oliver, Seth Meyers and the two Jimmies – Kimmel and Fallon all got together on Monday’s show in a reunion of the self-dubbed Strike Force Five from a podcast they hosted together three years ago. Colbert’s final show will be one week from tomorrow. CBS cancelled him months ago, citing financial reasons even though late night talk shows are notoriously profitable. Fans think the cancellation was political, as Colbert has continuously gone after President Trump. Kimmel called out fans for not cancelling their Paramount Plus subscriptions in protest. According to Kimmel, cancellation of ABC/Disney+ subscriptions was a factor in his return after conservative backlash convinced ABC to fire him last year. Trump once again called for his firing after a “light roast” concerning first lady, Melania Trump. This time ABC did not cave. At the end of Monday’s Late Show, Colbert announced there would be a Strike Force Five “emergency” podcast posted on video some time today. The original series of a dozen podcasts was during the Writer’s Strike, with all profits going to the staff of the five late night shows. https://www.npr.org/2026/05/12/nx-s1-5819155/colbert-late-night-hosts-strike-again

- In 2012, Donald “Duck” Dunn, bass player with the MG’s, the Blues Brothers, and a top studio musician for decades died in his sleep the night after playing at the Blue Note night club in Tokyo where he’d been touring with Eddie Floyd and fellow MG, Steve Cropper.
