About two thirds of the 50k evacuees for the Garden Grove chemical threat were allowed to return to their homes yesterday after fire officials announced a best-possible scenario resolution to the five-day-old emergency. A crack developed in the top of the chemical tank, relieving pressure and preventing the explosion crews had been expecting. Up until then, all emergency crews could do was keep spraying the tank with water. As of this morning, only the one-third of evacuated homes closest to the chemical plant remain off limits. www.pe.com

For probably the first time ever, Taylor Swift got shut out at the American Music Awards in spite of having eight nominations. Instead, the night at the MGM Grand last night didn’t belong to any one act. Seven of them tied with three wins each – BTS who won Artist of the Year, Bruno Mars, Cardi B, Katseye who won best new artist, Sabrina Carpenter, Huntr/X, and Sombr. Nominations for the 52nd AMA’s were based on key fan interactions including streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay and concert grosses. https://www.billboard.com/music/awards/bts-makes-amas-history-with-record-breaking-win-1236256463/
Speaking of BTS, the boy band is capitalizing on the increasing popularity of Korean pop culture by teaming with Nabisco for a special BTS Oreo cookie going on sale June 1. It features a sweet crème filling flavored to taste like a Korean brown sugar filled pancake between two purple cookies as a nod to the group’s favored color. The wafers are engraved with one of 13 designs, which when put together, spell out a message to fans. BTS has been around since 2013 and has been on hiatus since 2022 while the seven members completed mandatory military service in South Korea. The group returned to the stage in February. https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/26/business/bts-oreo-hotteok
Younger consumers apparently aren’t as into carbonated beverages as their parents. About a decade ago, flavored seltzers began to take off as people moved away from traditional soda pop. Now, thanks to seltzer fatigue, still drinks like Liquid Death and Surfside Iced Teas are in the spotlight. According to consulting firm, AlixPartners, the trend is there for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Seltzers and other carbonated drinks aren’t going away. They just aren’t growing as much in popularity. Malt-based hard seltzers like White Claw fell in sales by just over 1% over the past year, while the sale of ready-to-drink premixed cocktails grew 46%. Surfside was the fastest-growing alcohol brand in the U.S. in 2024. Cutwater canned cocktails’ sales nearly doubled last year. A lot of that shift is Gen Z looking for something new and different. But there’s also a health consideration. Carbonated water is slightly acidic, which can wear down tooth enamel if you drink a lot of it, and especially if the seltzer uses citric acid for flavor. Fizzy drinks can also cause one to feel bloated. On the other hand, if you want to relive your Cub Scout days, they’re great for belching contests. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/24/move-over-seltzer-non-carbonated-drinks-are-taking-the-spotlight.html
