Mercedes-Benz might no longer be able to sell new vehicles in the United States if a bill now making its way through Congress passes and is signed into law by the President.  The Motor Vehicle Modernization Act of 2026 would ban the German Automaker from the U.S. market because its largest shareholder is China’s state-owned BAIC.  According to reports from CNBC, if the act becomes legislation, any automaker with “any direct or indirect equity interest by a foreign-adversary government” which includes China, would be barred from selling or importing vehicles in the U.S.  www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, the low-budget horror film, “Backrooms” debuted in first place with $81.4m in ticket sales – about the same as the first three days for “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” and better than the first weekend for “The Devil Wears Prada 2” – both of which cost a lot more to make.  “Obsession” remained #2 with an additional $26.4m in its third week in theaters.  Mandalorian dropped to third place, with about 70% fewer people going to see it in its second weekend.  “Michael” is #4 in its 6th week of release.  “The Breadwinner” debuted in 5th place with $7.5m in ticket sales.  “Pressure” debuted in 7th place on half or fewer screens than the others with $5.7m.  Total movie attendance for the top ten films was about the same as the first three days of Memorial Weekend, which was the second-best three-day weekend this year.  https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W22/

The war with Iran and its effect on gas prices is changing the way we buy fuel.  According to its CEO, Costco has never sold as much gas as it did between April and mid-May.  Its stations are having to get multiple deliveries daily to keep up as people drive further and wait in longer lines to get what is usually the cheapest gas in the region.  They’re also getting it more often – topping off against the fear that prices might go up tomorrow.  Walmart reports seeing the same.  Their customers have begun filling up an average of less than ten gallons at a time for the first time since 2022.  With global supplies depleting and oil tankers still blocked from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, market analysts are predicting a huge jump in fuel prices in the near future.  That and the already $1.22 per gallon hike in average prices since last year mean higher prices will eventually be on the way for products made with petroleum or having to be transported long distances. https://www.npr.org/2026/05/29/nx-s1-5838740/how-stressed-are-americans-about-high-gas-prices-fueling
