Pala Today News – 6/2/26

Written by on June 2, 2026

The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.

LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Today is Election Day.  Polls are open until 8p.  Voting centers and official ballot drop box locations are listed at www.SDVote.com for San Diego County residents and www.VoteInfo.net for Riverside County.  Ballots returned by U.S. mail must be postmarked today.  The race for governor has been a true political dogfight full of scandal, partisan infighting, big-money political action committee campaigns and no clear front runner.  Thanks to redistricting, at least one incumbent Republican U.S. Representative will be out of a job.  Ken Calvert from Riverside County is up against Young Kim from Orange County. https://patch.com/california/temecula/election-day-temecula-what-s-ballot-june-2-primary

Don’t expect official results from today’s election anytime soon.  California is notorious for trailing other states when it comes to tallying votes.  The delay is due in part to added pandemic options for voting with every voter getting a ballot in the mail that can be cast three different ways over several weeks. Gov. Newsom sent a letter to all 52 county elections officials last month urging accurate, timely counting of ballots, saying that “mis- and dis-information” can spread in the time between Election Day and final certification of official results.   Political Data, Inc. reports that as of yesterday, 17% of registered California voters had cast their ballots – about the same as in 2022.  They also say that ultimate turnout for this election is expected to be around 38% to 40%, compared with 33% in 2022.  Expect longer than usual wait time at voting centers due to the many contentious races causing a higher turnout at the polls.  https://www.kpbs.org/news/politics/2026/06/02/california-voting-ends-tuesday-the-results-dont-expect-them-anytime-soon

An ATV crash in Valley Center Sunday night left one person dead and another hospitalized.  It was reported just after 10p on a dirt road near the 16000 block of Skype Way.  The 45-year old driver died of injuries and the 29-year old passenger suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries after plunging 300 feet down an embankment.  Their rescue took several hours.  Both were airlifted from the accident site.  It’s not known if alcohol was involved. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/1-dead-1-injured-in-valley-center-atv-crash

A vegetation fire was stopped at less than an acre along northbound I-15 near Rainbow Valley Boulevard this morning.  It was caused by a vehicle fire just after 7a.  Traffic was heavily impacted for at least an hour during the peak of the morning commute.  A crash involving a big rig and a passenger car further complicated things near the same spot about an hour after the fire began.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/05/28/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanvehicle-fire-sparks-vegetation-fire-along-interstate-15-near-rainbow/82032.html

A 2 ½ acre brush fire in the San Luis Rey River bed in Oceanside led to evacuation warnings for the Eastside Capistrano neighborhood Saturday evening.  It started near the bottom of North Loretta Street just after 5:30p.  There were no injuries or structural damage.  Two juvenile suspects were identified by fire investigators.  They were questioned and released to their parents.  The incident is still under investigation.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/fire-leads-to-evacuation-warnings-in-oceanside

SPORTS

In the NBA playoffs – San Antonio will host the Knicks for Game 1 of the NBA Finals tomorrow at 5:30p on ABC.

A federal judge has sentenced the founder of the now-bankrupt Aspiration company, Joseph Sanberg to 14 years in federal prison as a result of his guilty plea to two counts of wire fraud.  The green banking company is at the center of an NBA investigation into the LA Clippers.  Aspiration had announced a 23-year, $300m endorsement deal with the Clippers in 2021 and a $28m deal with star player, Kawhi Leonard in 2022.  Allegations were raised that the Leonard deal was to circumvent the league salary cap, prompting the investigation.  Team owner, Steve Ballmer, who invested and lost $60m of his own money in Aspiration denied all knowledge of the deal and advocated for the strongest possible sentence for Sanberg.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/48942217/aspiration-co-founder-sanberg-sentenced-14-years-prison

In the NHL playoffs – Carolina hosts Vegas for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals tonight at 5p on ABC.

The Vancouver Canucks have promoted Manny Malhotra, the coach of their minor league affiliate for the past two years, to be their new head coach.  The 46-year-old, whose father if from India has been with the organization since 2016 and guided the Abbotsford team to consecutive playoff appearances including a Calder Cup championship win last season.  Malhotra’s predecessor, Ryan Johnson was promoted to general manager two weeks ago. https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/48943956/canucks-promote-manny-malhotra-ahl-name-head-coach

In Major League Baseball – The Padres had the day off yesterday while the other two most important teams in the NL West played each other.  The Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Dodgers 4-1 in Phoenix.  Ketel Marte had a two-run homer.  Nolan Arenado and rookie Tommy Troy each hit solo homers.  That raises the Padres to five games behind LA and the D-back 5 ½ games back.  Colorado edged the Angels 9-8.  Those series continue today.  The Padres begin a series in Philadelphia.  Randy Vasquez will start for the Padres against the Phillies’ Aaron Nola.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm open a six game series in Fresno tonight.

In the NFL – The Seattle Seahawks and outside linebacker Derick Hall agreed yesterday to a three-year, $42m contract extension with $21m guaranteed.  Hall is now in the final year of his rookie contract.  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/48948457/seahawks-derick-hall-agree-3-year-42m-extension

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading, stocks were showing modest gains across the board.  The Dow was up a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up a tenth.  Gold gained $12.80 on the Comex, trading at $4,519.10 an ounce.  The benchmark, West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 95 cents at $93.11 a barrel. Treasury yields are near historic highs.

Market analysts note that the S&P 500 has only risen this quickly four times since World War II … and one of those times led to a historic stock market crash.  The current stock market boom is tied to AI. www.marketwatch.com

Anthropic has filed to go public.  The maker of Claude AI is hoping to beat its rival, Open AI to fresh funding.  Its initial public offering would push the company’s value to over $1 trillion, making it the third-biggest IPO ever, behind SpaceX and Saudi Aramco.  The AI industry is in a rush to generate trillions of dollars in funding through bond markets to finance giant data centers to power the AI revolution.  It’s similar to what happened in 2019 when ride share apps Uber and Lyft went public.  The one that got there first saw its stock perform much better than the other.  https://www.nbcnews.com/business/corporations/anthropic-files-ipo-openai-rcna347897

President Trump today signed an executive order establishing a process to vet top AI models for national security risks.  It’s not immediately clear how today’s order is different from the similar one he declined to sign on May 21.  That one was characterized as a voluntary collaboration with participating U.S.-based tech companies including Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.  https://apnews.com/article/trump-ai-executive-order-e41af74f7b0865482f07d10fe7a50fe3

President Trump has chosen Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency to be the acting director of national intelligence, replacing Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned last month after her husband was diagnosed with cancer.  According to Trump, Pulte’s real estate work overlaps the skills needed to coordinate the 18 federal agencies involved in national security.  He’ll also continue to lead the FHFA.  https://apnews.com/article/trump-pulte-gabbard-national-intelligence-281fd6ba9992487dc701768803f9c475

McDonald’s unveiled its latest global growth strategy at yesterday’s Worldwide Convention for franchisees in Las Vegas.  The fast food giant plans a new restaurant design, better-tasting food, improved customer service, and consumer-led innovation to compete for a shrinking pool of customers thanks to high gas prices and years of elevated inflation.  The food sector includes improvement in their chicken offerings.  Due to health concerns and high prices of beef, chicken has been the most competitive part of all fast food menus recently.  The last time Mickey D’s released a sweeping global strategy was November 2020 as sales were bouncing back from the pandemic.  McDonald’s is currently testing automated order-taking at five U.S. restaurants to help redefine hospitality and let employees focus on other tasks.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/01/mcdonalds-mcd-unveils-growth-strategy.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

National Public Radio is reporting that AI is making it extremely easy for anyone who can’t afford a lawyer, can’t get one, or doesn’t want one to file a lawsuit.  It’s causing a landslide of new pro se cases, but not a lot of wins.  The result: courts are becoming overwhelmed with poorly prepared new AI filings.  https://www.npr.org/2026/06/01/nx-s1-5839913/how-ai-is-clogging-the-courtroom
