LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A brush fire that began on Camp Pendleton just after 10a this morning has burned 75 acres and is threatening structures. Evacuation orders have been issued for parts of Oceanside adjoining the base. The temporary evacuation center is El Camino High School on Rancho Del Oro Drive. https://www.alertsandiego.org/en-us/incident-page.1519.html
With 88% of the vote counted, ABC News has projected that Republican Steven Hilton will advance to the November general election for the office of governor against Democrat Xavier Becerra. Becerra got 28% of the primary vote. Hilton got 25%. Steyer got about 200k fewer votes than Hilton – about 23%. Riverside Sheriff Chad Biano was a distant 4th place at 10%. https://abc7.com/post/california-governors-race-republican-steve-hilton-advances-ca-governor-runoff-will-face-xavier-becerra-november/19265953/
The Oceanside City Council recently approved modifications to its downtown density cap and other housing requirements as recommended by the Coastal Commission. They also approved a phased plan to comply with Senate Bill 79 to boots housing production near transit centers. An 86-dwelling unit per acre cap in the downtown district was adopted in 2023. The following January, an increase to 15% of those units were set aside for affordable housing. Those basic numbers still apply with clarifications that they are the maximum base density, exclusive of density bonus units. There are also provisions for the state’s new “acutely low income” category and the mandate that affordable units must remain that way for at least 55 years. According to city staff, Oceanside has seven potential transit-oriented development zones within which SB 79 allows low to mid-rise housing. They include Sprinter stations at the Oceanside Transit Center, Coast Highway, Crouch Street, El Camino Real, Rancho Del Oro, College Boulevard and Melrose Drive. https://thecoastnews.com/oceanside-prepares-for-sb-79-housing-law/
A nonprofit affiliated with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks is exploring a partnership with the city of Escondido to build a new public ice rink complex at Kit Carson Park. The Escondido City Council is scheduled to consider a memorandum of understanding this evening with The Rinks Foundation to study the feasibility of constructing a community ice facility at the park. If the project moves forward, the facility would be fully funded and built by The Rinks Foundation, a nonprofit established by philanthropists Henry and Susan Samueli, owners of the Anaheim Ducks and the American Hockey League’s San Diego Gulls. The foundation operates eight hockey and skating facilities across Southern California, including Poway ICE and Great Park Ice in Irvine https://thecoastnews.com/ducks-gulls-owners-propose-new-public-ice-rink-in-escondido

SPORTS
In the NBA finals – The league declined to upgrade San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama shoving of Knicks guard Jalen Brunson early in Game 3 to a flagrant foul. The NBA senior vice president of referee development told ESPN’s “NBA Today” yesterday that it should have been called. Wembanyama already has two flagrant fouls in the post season. Players who reach four are subject to automatic suspension. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/49015213/victor-wembanyama-avoids-flagrant-foul-shoving-brunson
Game 4 is tonight in New York at 5:30p on ABC. Game 5 will be Saturday. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/08/trump-booed-knicks-spurs-madison-square-garden.html
In the NHL Stanley Cup finals – Last night in Las Vegas, Carolina got out to an early lead and poured it on in the third period to beat the Golden Knights 5-3 and tie up the series at two games apiece. Game 5 is tomorrow in Raleigh at 5p on ABC.
In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost to the visiting Reds 5-3 in 11 innings last night at Petco Park. The Dodgers hammered the Pirates in Pittsburgh 12-3. Andy Pages hit a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly as the Dodgers scored 10 runs in the 7th inning. Miami beat Arizona 10-6. The Angels routed the visiting Astros 10-1. Seven of those runs came in the first two innings. The A’s beat Milwaukee in the second of their first six games to be played in their new home town of Las Vegas. Last night’s 7-5 win was a lot less wild and crazy than the night before. Let’s just say the Las Vegas minor league field they’re using until 2028 leaves a lot to be desired. But so far, it’s working in the A’s favor. All those series continue today. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49015414/a-las-vegas-sacramento-oakland-major-league-baseball
In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost 5-4 in a home game hosting Ontario last night. Game 2 of 6 is tonight.
In Soccer – Fans are universally outraged with FIFA and its dynamic ticket pricing strategy for this year’s Wold Cup. As of Monday, nearly 180k tickets for matches tournament-wide remain available on FIFA’s resale portal. About 4,400 of them are for Friday’s USA/Paraguay match in Los Angeles. Fans blame it on FIFA for raising prices an average of 35% since tickets first went on sale last October. The best tickets for the championship game tripled to $33k in May. Even the cheapest seats at that game are triple the price of the cheapest seats in Qatar in 2022. Since last month, prices have fallen 20% because the remaining tickets weren’t selling. It may be angering fans, but it’s making FIFA plenty of money. Ticket sales account for $3b of this year’s $11b overall revenue compared with less than $1b of the 2022 World Cup’s $7.5b in revenue. Along with making fans mad, it’s drawing the attention of several states, who are launching investigations into the soccer governing body on allegations of artificial ticket scarcity and price deception. www.morningbrew.com

Even as President Trump insists the U.S. and Iran are close to ending the war with predictions of a peace deal in “two or three days”, the U.S. launched so-called “self defense strikes” against Iranian targets last night in retaliation for the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter by an Iranian drone. Meanwhile, the UN’s International Maritime Organization reports that 11 seafarers have died in attacks on nearly 30 vessels trapped in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has said that any vessel trying to leave the gulf without its permission may come under fire. Shipping companies are trying to supply their vessels with food and fresh water, but there are reports of shortages. www.nytimes.com
A report today from the Labor Department shows inflation exceeding 4% for the first time in three years. Consumer prices in May were up 4.2% compared to a year ago. Meanwhile, average wages have only increased 3.4%. That’s a decline in real spending power. Prices rose 0.5% over the past month with more than half of that due to higher energy costs. Core inflation (without the volatile food and energy sectors) was up 2.9% since May of 2025. https://www.npr.org/2026/06/10/nx-s1-5853077/inflation-over-4-cpi-gasoline-prices
The AI model that Anthropic said last month was too powerful to be released to the public is being released to the public … just without the features that made it too scary. The Mythos-class, Claude Fable 5 version is now available, but with guardrails that block dangerous queries. If a user asks about topics like bioweapons or cybersecurity, they’ll be rerouted to a less-advanced model that won’t advise them on how to commit crimes. Meanwhile, Anthropic is rolling the scary version of Mythos out to more companies to test for security vulnerability. www.morningbrew.com
Boston-based Life Biosciences has begun the first FDA-approved human clinical trial of its ER-100 anti-aging drug. They’re testing with injections into human eyeballs to rejuvenate cells in the optic nerve of subjects with glaucoma to restore sight. Life Biosciences is hoping to use this so-called cellular reprogramming on other organs like the liver, and maybe someday, the brain. The concept is still in the early stages of development and led to cancerous cells forming in some early research with mice. Company co-founder David Sinclair, who is a geneticist at Harvard, has a history of overhyping his longevity treatments. www.morningbrew.com

General Motors is looking into a new battery chemistry to grow the AI data center and energy storage business. The automaker also detailed plans yesterday to increase its vehicle-to-grid capabilities with a next-generation sodium ion battery. Both concepts address the rising cost of energy amid the boom in artificial intelligence. Sodium ion technology has the potential to operate without active cooling and with less system complexity. Cooling of batteries is a large part of the upfront and operating costs at energy storage facilities. In partnership with Denver-based startup, Peak Energy, GM hopes to produce sodium ion cells for customer use after 2028. It’s also working on reducing the cost of lithium iron Phosphate, or LFP batteries in cooperation with LG Energy Solution as a short-term answer until sodium ion technology is ready for widespread use. Peak Energy was founded three years ago by former employees of Tesla, Lockheed Martin and battery developer Northvolt. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/09/gm-batteries-data-centers-energy-storage-business.html
