As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks had regained all of yesterday’s losses. The Dow was up 1.6%. The S&P 500 gained almost a half percent with gains by two out of three listed stocks. And the Nasdaq was up just a tenth as AI companies slumped a bit. Gold also rebounded $36.50 to $4,503.30 an ounce on the Comex. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell $3.60 to $92.42 a barrel. Treasury yields eased along with oil prices. The overall expectation on Wall Street seems to be that the U.S. and Iran will ultimately agree to a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which would relieve some of the worldwide inflationary pressure from the restricted flow of Middle Eastern crude oil.
The IPO for SpaceX, set for later this month is expected to raise up to $75b and put Elon Musk on course to become the world’s first trillionaire. Officially known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp., SpaceX will sell over 555m shares at $135 each, giving the company a market value of $1.77 trillion. Only six S&P 500 companies are worth more. Musk will have 82.4% of the voting power in the company by virtue of his 5.22b Class B shares, which count as ten votes per share. All of this for a company that is currently showing yearly losses in the billions and mounting. Musk has equally ambitious plans for his other publicly-traded company, Tesla. He wants to transition it into a producer of robotaxis and humanoid robots. All of it hinges on AI and putting data centers in space, which is not technologically possible … yet. https://apnews.com/article/spacex-tesla-elon-musk-ipo-public-offering-6490112997adcbc47235479685a89b72
Arizona-based Honeywell Aerospace is planning to split from its parent company later this month in hopes of accelerating company growth. As a stand-alone, Honeywell Aerospace expects 2026 adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of about $4.7b which is expected to increase about 40% by 2030. The company says it has “record” backorders from Airbus and Boeing. The division’s numbers have failed to impress investors because they were clouded by overall results of the entire Honeywell conglomerate. In the past three years, shares in Honeywell have gained 20%, while the S&P 500 is up 77%. That’s why the company is splitting into three separate companies – Honeywell Technologies, Honeywell Aerospace, and Solstice Advanced Materials. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/03/honeywell-aerospace-ceo-earnings-growth.html

President Trump has signed an executive order that converts 8k federal workers into at-will employees. That means, the government can fire them at any time without a reason. Almost all are at the highest level of Civil Service, known as GS-15. The administration characterizes the roles as senior positions with significant influence over policy. It was originally thought that as many as 50k jobs would be reclassified. Up until now, there were about 4k political appointees that serve at the pleasure of the President. The other 2m federal employees could only be fired for cause, including inadequate performance or misconduct. The administration says it’s about accountability. Critics say it politicizes important positions. The Civil Service was created more than a century ago to eliminate corruption and incompetence in federal jobs. https://www.npr.org/2026/06/03/nx-s1-5742806/trump-federal-employees-civil-service-job-protections-schedule-f
Health officials are on high alert as athletes and fans gear up for the biggest FIFA World Cup tournament ever. It’ll span 16 host cities in all three North American countries and feature 48 international teams. It comes just as an Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda had received a World Health Organization designation as a “public health emergency of international concern.” So far, there have been no cases of Ebola in the U.S. While Ebola makes the headlines, it’s more transmissible diseases like measles and respiratory viruses like Covid that have health officials concerned. U.S. cities are ramping up surveillance, hospital coordination and monitoring systems to detect and respond to potential outbreaks during the tournament. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/04/world-cup-2026-health-officials-focused-on-ebola-measles.html
