LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Three people were hospitalized after a rollover crash around 3a this morning in the 38000 block of Pala Temecula Road.  All three were able to get themselves out of the vehicle before it caught fire.  The road was closed for about an hour, reopening by 4a. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4725302734759-rollover-crash-near-pala-sends-3-to-hospital-closes-road

There were several injury accidents in Fallbrook over the weekend.  There was a single-vehicle DUI crash on South Mission near Air Park Road at about 1:47a yesterday.  The vehicle struck a tree.  Witnesses later reported a two-vehicle collision less than a mile south at Winterhaven Road.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/06/18/news/single-vehicle-crash-in-fallbrook-leaves-one-injured-dui-suspected/82207.html

There was also an injury accident at 5566 Olive Hill Road reported around 1:30a, just after a rollover on southbound I-15 near the Mission Road exit.  Both were single-vehicle incidents with injuries. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2026/06/18/news/solo-vehicle-crash-leaves-vehicle-overturned-on-interstate-15-in-fallbrook/82205.html

A teen was stabbed in the parking lot of the Shoppes at Carlsbad Saturday following an argument over an e-bike.  Police responded around 2p.  Witnesses say the two got into an altercation over a stolen bike.  One left and returned with a knife, stabbing the other teen, who was taken to a hospital with non-life=threatening injuries.  https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/teen-stabbed-following-fight-over-e-bike-in-carlsbad-mall-parking-lot/4039507/?amp=1

A community group is pushing back against the city of Escondido’s plans to build a permanent ice rink at Kit Carson Park.  The group, Save Kit Carson Park, which has about 100 members supports the idea of bringing a rink to the city, just not at that location.  Their opposition centers on weekend traffic and the loss of green space at the park.

Pala will have warmer temperatures with highs in the mid to upper-80s this week, cooling back down to the 70s by Sunday.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost two out of three over the weekend at Texas including a 4-3 decision yesterday that marked the Rangers first winning series in their past seven.  The Dodgers lost two out of three to the visiting Orioles including a 12-1 blowout yesterday.  Shohei Ohtani homered in Saturday’s 3-2 loss and became a father for the second time. The Diamondbacks also lost two out of three to Minnesota in Phoenix.  Yesterday’s score was 4-2.  In the American League, the Angels took two out of three from the A’s in Sacramento, only losing Friday’s game in ten innings on a bases-loaded walk with Kirby Yates pitching.

Today, the Padres host the Braves, the Dodgers are in Minnesota, Arizona is at St. Louis, and the Angels host the Orioles.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost 4-3 at San Jose yesterday.  The Storm dropped the last three after winning the first three in the series.  They open a series hosting Fresno tomorrow.

In the NFL – The Tennessee Titans and defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons have agreed to a three-year contract extension with $100m of the $105.8m guaranteed.  Simmons had a record-high eleven sacks last season.  He lad all NFL interior defense linemen in solo tackles with 39 and six other categories.  He was selected to the Pro-Bowl for the fourth time in his seven years in the NFL. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/49119435/titans-dt-simmons-agree-3-year-extension-100m-guaranteed

In World Cup Soccer – The US beat Australia 2-0 on Friday.  Yesterday, Spain routed Saudi Arabia 4-0.  Egypt topped New Zealand 3-1.  Uruguay and Cape Verde tied at 2, and Belgium and Iran played to a scoreless tie.

It’s expensive to fully indulge in the World Cup experience in this year’s North American-hosted tournament.  $75 caviar-topped tater tots and a five-pound $40 empanada in Miami.  Rib-eye tacos for $8 in Guadalajara.  And a twinkie cheeseburger for $22 in Los Angeles.  OK, those are unique.  But a lot of international soccer fans aren’t used to such prices and are especially appalled at the price of beer, which can top $20.  Fans in Europe are accustomed to concession beer at more like $5 or $6.  If you’re looking for World Cup concession bargains, go to Atlanta, where Falcons owner and stadium operator Arthur Blank is carrying over the low concessions prices he’s championed for years into the World Cup.  Pizza slices at $3, cheeseburgers for $5, 32-ounce sodas for $4 and beer for as little at $8.  By the way, the twinkie cheeseburger has nothing to do with the iconic cream-filled confection.  It’s a burger topped with a Texas Twinkie, which is a bacon-wrapped jalapeño stuffed with brisket and cream cheese. https://apnews.com/article/concession-prices-world-cup-beer-0896c84572dd666cea86a482fdc644c5

In the NBA – Dustin May is finalizing a deal to become the next coach of the Dallas Mavericks.  He’d led Michigan to the NCAA title in 2026.  The Mavericks fired Jason Kidd after last season’s 25 and 56 record.  May is the first college coach to take an NBA job in seven years. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/49143856/sources-michigan-dusty-finalizing-deal-coach-mavericks

In the WNBA – The LA Sparks edged the visiting New York Liberty yesterday 98-97.  Las Vegas and Washington were yesterday’s other winners.

In golf – At the U.S. Open in Southampton, New York, after setting a course record at 64 on Thursday, Wyndham Clark went on to win with a total 4 under par 276 – one stroke ahead of Sam Burns. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In racing – Yesterday at Naval Base Coronado, with broadcasters calling the action from the bridge of the USS Carl Vincent, anchored immediately adjacent to the 3 1/3-mile street track, Corey Heim was the winner of the first-ever NASCAR race in San Diego.  It was Heim’s first Cup Series win in only his 13th start.  Bubba Wallace finished second, for a 1-2 finish for the 23XI (twenty-three eleven) Racing team.  Season points leader Tyler Reddick in the 23XI car sponsored by Pala Casino had the lead with ten laps to go, but blew a tire with two laps to go, finishing 25th.  This was the second time in three years that an inaugural NASCAR street race produced a first-time winner.  Shane van Gisbergen won his Cup debut in the 2023 Chicago Street Race. https://apnews.com/article/nascar-san-diego-61f3fdf8ada2476109128097aae362b2

Also yesterday, in Indycar racing in Wisconsin, Christian Lundgaard won the Grand Prix of Road America. https://www.espn.com/racing/raceresults/_/series/indycar/raceId/202606210111

EV maker Lucid will lay off 18% of its workforce and Chief Operating Officer Marc Winterhoff is leaving the company.  He is not being replaced.  The COO role is being eliminated.  Winterhoff had been interim CEO until Silvio Napoli took over on June 1.  The automaker had about 9k employees worldwide as of December 31.  It was also announced, Lucid would eliminate the second shift at tis Arizona factory.  Although the company has increased sales and narrowed losses, it still lost $2.7b on revenue of $1.35b in 2025.  All EV manufacturers have been suffering from policy changes under the Trump administration including the elimination of the $7,500 federal incentive for buying an electric vehicle. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/22/lucid-layoffs-evs.html

UPS will invest $48m on improvements at 27 temperature-controlled facilities to accommodate healthcare logistics amid the boom in GLP-1 weight loss drugs and other medications that have to be kept at certain temperatures.  Demand for shipping temperature-sensitive biologics is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 8.3% with a market value of $39.1b by 2033.  https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/22/ups-healthcare-logistics-investment.html

Watch Duty, the tracking app used by millions to monitor wildfires has expanded to include the climate hazard: flooding.  The expansion comes as peak flash flood season begins in the U.S. and just one year after extreme floods in Texas hill country killed more than 130 people, prompting criticism about lack of communication regarding impeding danger.  Watch Duty now has about 300 volunteer reporters who collate at vet information from radio scanners, cameras, satellites, user-generated content and public announcements that might become muddled or incorrect when spread by social media.  Watch Duty can push information faster than local agencies partly because reporters have only one role to fill.  They’re not in charge of the incident and concerned about screening and filtering raw info. https://apnews.com/article/watch-duty-flood-alerts-fire-john-mills-63a6e581739c382463317803914d10a7

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movies, “Toy Story 5” opened huge, selling $160m worth of tickets – almost ten times the amount for the #2 film, “Disclosure Day”.  “Obsession” was third with $14.2m in sales.  “Leviticus” opened in 8th place with $2.7m on just 1k screens.  “the Death of Robin Hood” was close behind with $2.6m on 1,700 screens.  The total for the top ten films this weekend was almost double that of the previous weekend and by far the biggest three-day weekend at the movies so far this year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W25/

President Trump on Saturday claimed federal authorities had made “multiple arrests” of people he says were vandalizing the Washington Reflecting Pool.  His $14m rehabilitation project of the pool for the nation’s 250th anniversary seemingly backfired when the water recently turned green with algae and scum and a liner applied to the bottom lifted.  Trump offered no details to substantiate his claim and agencies charged with law enforcement and maintenance on the National Mall have refused to comment.  The pool will now have to be drained for the second time to fix the detached liner, which is said to be under warranty. www.apnews.com

Prediction markets, which allow people to bet on the outcome of real-world events have exploded in the past year or two.  Kalshi controls over 90% of the U.S. prediction market with annual revenue over $1.5b.  According to Pew Research Center the combined global trading volume of Kalshi and its main competitor, Polymarket grew from $4.5b in September of 2024 to over $24b in April 2026.  But of the millions of users, only a tiny fraction make big money betting on how many times Elon Musk will tweet in a week, or whether any particular Kardashian will run for public office and whether or not they’ll win.  Sports, cryptocurrency and politics are the hottest topics.  According to the Wall Street Journal, 67% of Polymarket’s profits go to just 0.1% of user accounts.  The average user has lost between $1 and $100.  The bottom 10% have lost about $4k each.  At Kalshi, for every user who makes money, there are almost three who don’t.  In spite of the odds, at least one investment expert is forecasting that the prediction market will grow from that $24b a couple of months ago to $1 trillion per year by 2030. www.morningbrew.com

The case was brought on behalf of Spirit’s late guitarist, Randy Wolfe. His estate claimed the opening riff of the 1968 song Taurus is fundamentally the same as the iconic opening bars of Stairway to Heaven. The court eventually ruled it didn’t.
