A fire Saturday at the junction of the 15 and 215 freeways in Murrieta prompted the closure of both freeways just before 2p. The fire’s forward progress was halted at less than an acre about 15 minutes later. Both freeways were fully reopened by 3p. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/fire-prompts-closure-215-15-freeways-murrieta
Two children and one adult were burned while roasting marshmallows in a backyard party Saturday in Oceanside. First responders were called to the 500 block of The Strand North at about 6:30p. Due to the severity of their injuries, the two children were airlifted to a regional burn center. One of the children’s father was transported by ground ambulance to the same burn center. Investigation shows the incident involved rubbing alcohol being used as fuel. Alcohol vapors can ignite unexpectedly, creating a flash fire, even in what appears to be normal use. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/three-people-burned-roasting-marshmallows-in-oceanside

The city of Oceanside has updated its general plan in expectation of 45k new residents and 17k more housing units by the year 2050.
A San Marcos HOA is trying to fine homeowners for flying the American flag. The Ambiance Homeowners Association adopted a ban of all residential flag displays in 2024. Amy Cooke has been flying her American flag there for 20 years. She’s now received multiple notices to remove it or be fined $100. Legal experts say forcing her to remove the flag is absolutely a violation of law. Her HOA has not responded to requests for their side of the story. With four days to go before America’s 250th Anniversary, Cooke and one other neighbor who’ve refused to submit to the flag ban will have a hearing before the HOA tomorrow night. https://inewsource.org/2026/06/29/san-marcos-hoa-american-flag-fine/
One of the Big Bear Lake eagle chicks, Sandy took her first flight after an accidental steep fall from a tree as she and her sibling, Luna were hopping over each other. Thousands of viewers were watching the livestream Eagle Cam at the time. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/thousands-of-people-line-s-coast-highway-in-oceanside-for-the-annual-independence-parade

The US Supreme Court has ruled that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook can remain with the central bank while President Trump continues his attempts to fire her. But, among the many decisions handed down by SCOTUS last week, justices on Thursday overturned a 91-year-old precedent that has prevented presidents from removing members of independent agencies at will. In a 6-3 ruling, the court found that President Trump’s March 2025 firing of Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter without cause was lawful. The decision represents a significant win for the Trump administration and a major expansion of the president’s control over parts of the government once seen as a check on his powers. Since its creation of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 1914, Congress has held that commissioners can only be fired for “inefficiency, neglect of duty or malfeasance in office.” Slaughter was presented with no such reason for her removal, only told her “continued service on the FTC is inconsistent with [the Trump] Administration’s priorities.” Last summer, a lower court had found her firing was unlawful. https://www.npr.org/2026/06/29/nx-s1-5816232/supreme-court-ftc-independent-agencies-humphreys-executor

Slowing population growth, changing consumer behavior and soaring prices are creating the perfect storm that may see automakers selling as many as 2m fewer vehicles per year by 2040. Ten years ago, the industry sold a record 17.6m new cars, trucks and SUVs in the U.S. Some industry analysts are saying we’ll never see that again, and that in fact, sales are going to continue to fall. There will be fewer new drivers due to population decline and younger demographics foregoing personal vehicles, and fewer new vehicles sold by a declining industry at a time when technology is disrupting everything. Half of all 16-year-olds today don’t have a driver’s license. And the share of new vehicle registrations by people aged 18 to 34 fell from 12% in 2021 to 10% last year. More than half of all new-car buyers are now 55 or older. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/06/28/us-auto-market.html

It has never been #1. “Jackass: Best and Last” opened in 4th place with $8.4m. The total for this weekend’s top ten was $148m. That’s below average for weekends since Memorial Day, but better than average for the year so far. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2026W26/
