LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
California Senate members yesterday approved a measure establishing enforceable protections for the free exercise of California Indian religious and spiritual practices on state lands. AB 1881 would prohibit any state agency from substantially burdening a California tribe’s right to religious practices that others already enjoy, permit access to sacred sites on state public lands and permit the gathering of traditional plants, foods, and other materials essential to tribal religious practice. The measure would align state law with the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, affirming the rights of Indigenous people to maintain their cultural traditions, access to, and protection of sacred sites provided to other faiths. The bill, authored by Asm. James Ramos now goes back to the Assembly for concurrence on Senate amendments. (Asm. James Ramos media release)
The Pala Band of Mission Indians annual Gathering was held at Pala Rey Youth Camp Saturday. It was a full and very hot day of bird singing, ending with peon after dusk. The bow and arrow contest had about 25 entrants. In the 10-13 age group, first place went to Ryder Cueva, second place want Mac Orozco. In the 14-17 age group, Kaylee Pepper won it. Wayne Nelson Jr. took second place. Third place, Shivela Nelson. In the open category, first place went to Evan Pepper. Second place, Abraham Cueva. Third place, Wayne Nelson Jr. Shinny games were held at 4p. The night’s peon winners were posted on Facebook.
Now that the seemingly endless heatwave has ended, Pala will have high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s all this week, warming a little on Sunday with a chance of rain. The full forecast is coming up. (below)
SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres got swept in Tampa Bay, losing yesterday 5-4 in 11 innings. The Rays’ Jonny DeLuca hit a two-out, two-run homer to tie it in the 9th. Jorge Mateo singled in the winning run two innings later. The Dodgers won two out of three in Detroit. The Diamondbacks lost two out of three in San Francisco. But that one win was enough to put them back in second place, a half game ahead of San Diego. Arizona trails the Dodgers by 9 ½ games. Philadelphia swept the Angels in Anaheim. The Angels are still in last place in the AL West and share the current worst record in the Majors with Colorago – 52 and 85. Today, the Padres are in Cincinnati, Arizona hosts Philadelphia, the Angels host the Yankees, and the Dodgers are off.
In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost 16-13 yesterday at Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes took 5 out of 6 in the series. The Storm begin their final series of the season tomorrow hosting Inland Empire.
In the NFL – On Saturday, the Seattle Seahawks officially signed cornerback Terrion Arnold, who is facing felony charges in Florida that he orchestrated the abduction and beating of three men in February. The Detroit Lions released him a few days after the kidnapping and he’s been a free agent since June. In Major League Soccer – On Saturday, LAFC and DC United played to a scoreless tie, and San Diego FC beat the visiting Galaxy 3-1.
In the NBA – Jaylen Brown got the key to the city yesterday in an event organized by his brand, 741 Performance and the state of Massachusetts. It was free and open to everyone at Boston Common. In golf – At the TOUR Championship in Atlanta, Scottie Scheffler won it with a 16-under par 264 – three strokes better than anybody else. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard
In racing – At the Grand Prix of Milwaukee, Pato O’Ward won both races at The Milwaukee Mile. At Daytona, Ryan Preece won Saturday’s NASCAR Cup race.

As of the close of trading on Wall Street, stock finished the day lower. The Dow lost 7 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 fell a third. The Nasdaq was off by a tenth of a percent. Gold gained $13.30 on the Comex, ending at $4,494.80 an ounce. West Texas intermediate Crude oil futures added 70 cents, finishing at $86.46 a barrel.
The U.S. and Iran are once again trading missile attacks. It’s the first escalation of the war in a month.

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is still #1, selling another $15.5m worth of tickets. “The Odyssey” climbed back to #2 with $14.3m. “Coyote vs. Acme” debut in third place with $11.1m. “The Dog Stars” opened in fourth with $8m. “Buddy” debuted in 5th with $5.3m. - In 1957, Elvis Presley performed in concert in Vancouver, Canada for a stadium crowd of 26k. It was only his third show outside the U.S. and it would be the last. His manager, Col. Tom Parker feared he wouldn’t be let back in the country if he ever left and wouldn’t allow Elvis to go without him.
- In 1963, the girl group The Angels began the first of three weeks at #1 with “My Boyfriend’s Back”.
- In 1968, The Rolling Stones released what has been called their most political song, “Street Fighting Man”. Mick Jagger wrote it after attending an anti-war rally at the U.S. embassy in London. Many radio stations refused to play it on the grounds that the lyrics were subversive.
- On the same day, The Move, The Pretty Things, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Jefferson Airplane, Orange Bicycle, Fairport Convention, and Tyrannosaurus Rex all appeared at the first Isle of Wight Festival. It was Britain’s version of Woodstock, and was first held one year before Woodstock. By year three, attendance at the Isle of Wight Festival exceeded Woodstock.
- In 1976, George Harrison was found guilty of “subconscious plagiarism” for using the melody of the song “He’s So Fine”, written by Ronnie Mack in his hit, “My Sweet Lord”.
- In 1985, the Dire Straits album “Brothers in Arms” began the first of nine weeks at #1 on the album chart.
- In 1987, Fleetwood Mac released “Little Lies” from their 14th studio album, continuing a string of hits then spanning ten years.
- On the same day, CBS records got its largest pre-order ever as 2 ¼ million copies of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” shipped to record stores. It was the follow-up to “Thriller” which sold 35m copies. Bad sold 13m.
- In 1990, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Wonder sang “Amazing Grace” at a memorial service for guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan who’d been killed in a helicopter crash four days earlier.
- In 1991, Metallica began the first of four weeks at #1 with their self-titled album containing the hits “Enter Sandman” and “The Unforgiven”.
- In 2002, NASA announced that Lance Bass from NSYNC would become the world’s first celebrity astronaut on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. At 23, he would also be the world’s youngest astronaut. He ended up not going after failing to pay for the $20m ticket for the flight.
- In 2004, a British medical magazine warned music fans that music at excessive volume can cause serious health issues, citing a 19-year old treated for a collapsed lung caused by the 1k watt bass box he was blasting in his Fiat.
- In 2007, Hilly Kristal, founder of legendary New York punk club CBGB’s died from lung cancer. Blondie and Talking Heads got their start there. Kristal was credited with discovering Patti Smith and The Ramones.
