San Diego Gas & Electric will host an open house tonight to allow the public to discuss and obtain more information on a proposed 500-kilovolt transmission line that would run from Imperial Valley to the east to the border of San Diego and Orange counties to the west. The Golden Pacific Powerlink would stretch about 150 miles if it eventually gains the approval of the California Public Utilities Commission. The proposed line has already received strong opposition for its proposed routes either through Temecula Wine Country or crisscrossing the San Luis Rey River south of Palomar Mountain then continuing through De Luz. Fires caused by SDG&E power lines devastated Fallbrook in 2007, leading to the creation of Rez Radio. Tonight’s meeting is at the Embassy Suites in Temecula from 4 to 7p. A fire that began in a rubbish pile yesterday near Lake Matthews between Corona and Perris was knocked down after burning about 60 acres. www.pe.com
The city of Oceanside has created a special working group of city officials to review flood-response procedures and begin clearing storm drains, creeks and the San Luis Rey River bed to get ready for what’s widely expected to be very strong El Niño rains this winter. The San Luis Rey River is normally less than 6 feet deep at its gauge in Oceanside. More than 1m people in San Diego County alone are under a National Weather Service Extreme Heat Warning today. Pala can expect high temperatures of 100 or more for the next four days. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

In Major League Baseball – The Padres were shut out 1-0 by the Pirates at Petco Park. Atlanta edged the Dodgers 4-3. Arizona beat the visiting Cubs 5-4, pulling themselves to within a game of the second-place Padres, who remain 9 ½ games behind the Dodgers. Cleveland beat the Angels 8-6 in ten innings.
In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost 5-3 last night at Rancho Cucamonga. Game 2 of 6 is tonight.
In the NFL – The final week of preseason games begins tomorrow with Pittsburgh at Buffalo, New England at Cleveland, San Francisco at Las Vegas and the Rams against the Chargers.
In Major League Soccer – San Diego FC hosts the Galaxy this Saturday. LAFC is in Washington to play DC United
In the NBA – Two of the Lakers-owner Buss brothers have joined Kwanza Jones and Jose Feliciano’s San Diego Padres ownership group. In the WNBA – Yesterday’s winners were Connecticut, Dallas, and Washington.
In the NHL – Arizona State University is reviewing the circumstances around a hockey team workout where St. Louis Blues prospect Matthew Mayich collapsed, suffering a possible cardiac event last week. He’s been hospitalized for the past six days since the outdoor workout. In golf – With its season now over and future uncertain, LIV Golf today informed employees that it is scaling back and will eliminate a number of positions. No specifics were given, but it’s expected that a majority of the workforce will be affected. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia withdrew its support for the upstart pro golf league in April. PIF had invested more than $5b since LIV’s first tournament in June 2022. In lacrosse – The San Diego Seals announced last week that they are leaving Pechanga Arena to make Frontwave Arena in Oceanside their new home. The join the San Diego Sockers and San Diego Strike Force, both of whom also used to play home games at Pechanga Arena. As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down. The Dow fell 2 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 declined a small fraction. And the Nasdaq was off by 2 tenths. Gold fell another $44.50 on the Comex, trading at $4,650 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 25 cents at $82.61 a barrel.
Hot on the heels of its loss in New Mexico court, Meta has settled a similar and much larger teen social media addiction case filed by a group of states led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta. The parent company of Facebook and Instagram has agreed to pay $16.7b and add stronger child-safety measures. The money will be paid out over 10 years with each participating state getting at least $1.5b. If approved by the court, the deal will prevent further litigation and provide money to benefit kids’ mental health, including after-school and summer activities and digital literacy counseling. Online measures to be implemented include default time limits and disabling features such as “like” counts and push notifications during school hours. Meta is urging rivals TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar safety measures. The fastest-growing U.S. automaker is Hyundai. Its consistently growing market share is expected to increase even faster as it ramps up production at a new $7.6b plant in Georgia. Six years ago, Hyundai surpassed Honda. A little over three years ago, it surpassed Stellantis – maker of Chrysler, Fiat and Jeep. It now stands at #4 in the U.S. behind GM, Toyota and Ford in market share and is #3 for global market share and #2 in profitability. Since 2020, Hyundai’s U.S. market share has grown from 8.4% to 11.2% with sales up 50% over that period. No other automaker has even close to those gains. Apple has announced it will hold its next iPhone launch event September 9 at its Cupertino headquarters. Among several new iPhones and watches are the company’s first folding phone. Charter Communications announced yesterday that it has completed its acquisition of Cox Communications, expanding the Spectrum brand into Cox markets in San Diego County. Charter says it will introduce Spectrum branding, pricing and product packages to the new territories the middle of next month. British stage and film actor and singer Tim Curry has died. Best known for his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the stage musical, “The Rocky Horror Show” and its movie version, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, Curry’s career began in the 1968 London production of “Hair”. He received Olivier Award best-actor nominations for “The Pirates of Penzance” in 1982 and as King Arthur in 2007’s “Spamalot”. He earned three Tony Award nominations for his work on Broadway. His movie credits included “Clue” and “The Hunt for Red October”. On television, he portrayed Pennywise in the 1990 miniseries “It”. As a singer, he released three rock-focused albums including 1979’s “Fearless” featuring the hit “I Do the Rock”. He received a Grammy nomination for his narration of the audiobook version of “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.” He did voiceovers for numerous commercials and animated film and TV. Curry never married and had no children. He was an avid gardener. In 2012 he suffered a massive stroke requiring major surgery. He got around in a wheelchair after that. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today approved a landmark drug for the treatment of pancreatic cancer. The first-of-its-kind pill blocks a mutated protein that fuels tumor growth in more than 90% of all pancreatic cancer cases. The daily pills will be sold by Revolution Medicines under the name Rasonque. In a study, patients taking the drug nearly doubled their survival time with fewer side effects compared with chemotherapy. Pancreatic cancer is among the deadliest of cancers because it’s hard to detect before it spreads to other organs. - 1965, Sonny & Cher were at #1 with “I Got You Babe”, written to capitalize on the popularity of the term “babe” created by Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me Babe”
- In 1967, The Beatles held a press conference in Wales to announce they’d become disciples of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and renounced the use of drugs. Membership in the Maharishi’s “Spiritual Regeneration Movement” obligated them to donate one week’s earnings each month to the organization. The following February they traveled to India to train in Transcendental Meditation with him, but ended up denouncing the Maharishi over financial disagreements and suspicions that he was taking advantage of their fame. But their time there was productive. The four Beatles wrote most of the double White Album songs during that visit.
- In 1970, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Donovan, Jethro Tull, Miles Davis, Mungo Jerry, Emerson Lake & Palmer, The Doors, The Who, Spirit, The Moody Blues, Chicago, Sly & the Family Stone, and Free all appeared at the 3rd Isle of Wight Festival – Europe’s version of Woodstock.
- In 1978, Frankie Valli was at #1 on the singles chart with the theme from “Grease”, written by Barry Gibb from the Bee Gees.
- In 1987, Sonny Bono, who once boasted that he’d never voted until he was 53, announced he was running for mayor of Palm Springs. He won and later went on to a seat in Congress in 1996.
- In 1994, Scottish singer Frankie Miller suffered a brain hemorrhage while writing material for a new band he and Joe Walsh had formed. Miller was in a coma for five months before entering rehab where he had to re-learn how to walk and talk, much less sing.
- In 1995, Seal hit #1 with “Kiss From a Rose” taken from the “Batman Forever” soundtrack
- In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine named Jimi Hendrix the greatest guitarist in the history of rock. Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Chuck Berry, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Ry Cooder also made the top ten.
- In 2005, a year after his death, a post office near the LA studios where Ray Charles recorded much of his music was renamed to honor the R&B legend. It literally took an act of Congress.
- In 2007, the Rolling Stones finished their 2-year A Bigger Bang World Tour with a show at London’s O2 Arena. It was the highest grossing concert tour in history at $560m
