A man is alleged to have attacked his former roommate with a chainsaw in Fallbrook last evening. The victim walked into the fire station on Rainbow Valley Boulevard last evening around 7:18p and was transported to a hospital with undisclosed injuries. Deputies say the attack supposedly happened in the 1000 block of Rice Canyon Road. A vehicle fire briefly disrupted traffic on southbound I-15 last evening around 8:50p. It happened on the grade between Highway 76 and Old 395 exit. The vehicle was fully engulfed on the right shoulder when fire crews arrived. A juvenile has been arrested in connection with the drive-by shooting in Vista August 15 on Vista Village Drive at 2N1 Korean BBQ. One patron inside the restaurant was struck by the gunfire. Automatic License Plate Readers are reported to have been the key in locating the Oceanside juvenile, who was in possession of a ghost gun at the time of arrest. Escondido City Council is set to vote this week on a data center moratorium to allow the city to establish guidelines before any applications begin to make their way through the approval process. Data centers are large warehouse-style facilities that store and process data for the internet, cloud services and communication networks. They require significant amounts of electricity and water to operate. Weather in Pala is hot and will be getting hotter. The National Weather service has issued a Heat Advisory through tomorrow morning. At that point, an Extreme Heat Warning begins, lasting through at least Friday. San Diego and Riverside Counties operate free, air-conditioned Cool Zones including most public libraries, many community centers and senior facilities for anyone without reliable air conditioning. The cool zones in Pala are Pala Casino and Pala Fitness Center. We can expect at least three consecutive days above 100 degrees this week in Pala. The full forecast is coming up. (below)

In Major League Baseball – The Padres swept the visiting Twins including an 8-1 rout yesterday with Walker Buehler getting the win and Fernando Tatis Jr. hitting two homers. Jackson Merrill got his 21st homer of the year in the 7th inning. The Dodgers swept the visiting Pirates including yesterday’s 4-0 shutout. The series began with a 10-inning walk-off Friday with Tommy Edman providing the game-winning RBI single. Arizona took two out of three from the visiting Reds. The Angels lost two out of three at Texas. Today, San Diego hosts Pittsburgh. Arizona hosts the Cubs. The Angels host Cleveland and the Dodgers have the day off.

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm lost 5-0 to San Jose last night. That completed a six-game sweep by the Giants. The Storm open a series at Rancho Cucamonga tomorrow night.
In the NFL – Preseason Week 2 winners were Las Vegas, San Francisco, the Jets, Carolina, green Bay, Detroit, Buffalo, Atlanta, Baltimore, the Rams, the Giants, Cincinnati, New England, Tampa Bay, Dallas and Tennessee.

In Major League Soccer – On Saturday, LAFC and the Portland Timbers tied at 1 and the Galaxy tied with CF Montreal at 2 on. San Diego FC shut out Colorado at Snapdragon Stadium 3-0.
In the NBA – Klay Thompson has signed his deal with the Miami Heat, who waited patiently for weeks to see if they would get the chance to add the sharpshooter to their reworked roster. Thompson — who is No. 4 on the NBA’s all-time 3-pointers-made list — cleared waivers yesterday afternoon and wasted little time finalizing a two-year deal with Miami. The contract is for $13 million and includes a player option in the second season. www.espn.com
In the WNBA – Yesterday’s winners were Dallas, Indiana, Washington, and Las Vegas.
In golf – At the BMW Championship in St. Louis, Wyndham Clark was the winner thanks to three consecutive birdies on the last three holes. He shot 17 under par 263. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up a tenth of a percent. The S&P 500 was down a quarter percent. And the Nasdaq was off by 6 tenths. Gold traded $7.70 cents higher on the Comex at $4,688.30 an ounce. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down $2.23, trading at $84.83 a barrel.
Market watchers are attributing the sharp drop in oil to the announcement of “Operation Outcast” against Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent today announced new sanctions aimed at further isolating Iran, calling it an “economic D-Day”. He said President Trump is making phone calls to world leaders requesting they cease trading with Iran and will implement sanctions against all international entities engaged in facilitating Iranian trade related to shipping, oil, crypto, gold and aviation. Bessent did not lay out any immediate specific actions. The stock market had little reaction. The United Arab Emirates, which has become closely allied with the Trump administration had announced the end of all trade relations with Iran before Bessent’s announcement. Experts say the success of the administration’s latest strategy will hinge on whether major trading partners including China, India and Russia decide the latest U.S. threats are credible, and say there is little the U.S. can do to make them go along with the boycott of trade with Iran. So far, the six-month-old war has cost the U.S. $37.5b in direct expenses. The total cost is far greater. Canada is digging in its heels in the face of President Trump’s latest tariff threats, saying it will enact retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods beginning September 8. Trade talks between the U.S. and Canada failed, so the U.S. has enacted new 50% tariffs on $20b worth of Canadian imports. Goods coming into the U.S. from Canada typically total around $382b annually. www.morningbrew.com
California Attorney General Rob Bonta cancelled today’s meeting with Paramount to discuss its merger with Warner Bros Discovery. Bonta says the company demonstrated a “lack of good faith” in early settlement talks when it leaked the substance of confidential meetings with his office on Friday. Paramount says it was not the source of the leaks. One of the partners at Goldman Sachs has issued a warning about AI, saying it could erode bankers’ reasoning skills if allowed to do all analytical work. Chris Churchman says banks need to find a balance between AI and the Wall Street’s apprenticeship culture. Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continued to dominate, earning another $39m in ticket sales. “Insidious: Out of the Further” debuted in second place with $25.3m, followed by “the Odyssey” in its 6th week, “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie”, “The End of Oak Street”, and the debut of “Mutiny” on 1k fewer screens than the others. Actress and singer Shelly Fabares has passed. The niece of actress Nannette Fabray, she made her acting debut at age 3 and had parts in numerous TV shows in the mid-1950s. In 1958, she landed the role of Mary Stone, TV daughter of Donna Reed, which quickly established Fabares as a favorite with teen audiences. That led to a music career including a #1 hit in spring of 1962, “Johnny Angel”, and the big screen where she was one of the female leads in the 1964 surf film, “Ride the Wild Surf.” Fabares played the main love interest in three Elvis Presley films. After Donna Reed, she continued to work television guest roles through the 1960’s, 70s and 80s. In 1989, she landed the female lead in TV’s “Coach” alongside Craig T. Nelson. It became a hit and ran for 8 seasons, earning two Emmy nominations for Fabares. Her first marriage was in 1964 to record producer Lou Adler – one of the organizers of the 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival. They separated three years later and divorced in 1980. She’d been diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis in the 1990’s which led to liver failure and had a successful liver transplant in 2000 after a 22-month wait for a donor organ. She recovered and lived a quiet retired life with actor-husband Mike Farrell who she’d married in 1984 just after his run on TV’s “M*A*S*H” ended. - In 1959, a headline in Billboard magazine read “Rock and Roll Ain’t Ready for the Ol’ Rockin’ Chair Yet”. The previous year, a few months after the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, the musical genre was losing popularity. But just over a year after that, Elvis, Fats Domino and newcomers The Everly Brothers, The Drifters and Ricky Nelson had begun breathing new life into rock ‘n’ roll.
- In 1963, Stevie Wonder became the first artist ever to score a #1 album and single in the same week. He topped the album chart with “Little Stevie Wonder – The 12-year old Genius” and had the #1 single with “Fingertips part 2” which was also the first-ever live recording to hit #1.
- In 1966, The Doors recorded their first album at Sunset Sound Recording Studios in LA.
- In 1967, a group called Earth gained a new 17-year old singer and guitarist … Bruce Springsteen
- In 1974, Paul Anka and Odia Coates began the first of three weeks at #1 with “You’re Having My Baby”, a song incredibly out of tune with the times.
- In 1975, Queen began recording “Bohemian Rhapsody” at a studio in Wales. Freddie Mercury had mentally prepared the song beforehand and directed the band through three weeks of recording sessions of up to ten or twelve hours a day and vocals requiring 180 separate overdubs.
- In 1977, country singer-songwriter Waylon Jennings was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine. He’d recently been named an honorary police chief.
- In 1981, Mark David Chapman was given a 20 year to life jail sentence for the murder of John Lennon. More than 40 years later, he’s still in prison.
- In 1983, Jerry Lee Lewis’ fifth wife was found dead in their Mississippi home of a methadone overdose. They’d been married less than 3 months. The next year he would marry 22-year old Kerrie McCarver. That one lasted 20 years until their divorce in 2004.
- In 1985, Huey Lewis and the News hit #1 for the first of two weeks with “The Power of Love” from the movie “Back to the Future”
- In 2009, The LA County coroner ruled Michael Jackson’s death a homicide caused by a mix of drugs meant to treat insomnia. The following spring Dr. Conrad Murray would be charged with involuntary manslaughter, of which he would eventually be found guilty and serve four years in jail.
