Representatives of the Walmart on Marron Road in Oceanside just north of the Carlsbad border have asked to install 12 take-off and landing pads in their parking lot for drones that would deliver lightweight purchases within a 6-mile radius. Walmart recently began drone deliveries in a few other states, but so far not in California. In May the company announced it had made 1 million drone deliveries from 66 stores in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Texas. Company officials have scheduled a meeting with Oceanside city planners next week to review the proposal. Walmart will need a conditional use permit and city council approval. Deliveries could begin next year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/08/19/walmart-plans-drone-delivery-from-oceanside-store-to-homes-within-6-miles/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks gave back all of yesterday’s gains and then some. The Dow fell 1% led by declines for Walmart and Boeing. The S&P 500 was down almost 6 tenths of a percent. And the Nasdaq was off by more than 9 tenths. Gold continued to gain on the Comex, trading up $24.10 to $4,569.40 an ounce. The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $2.03 to $87.86 a barrel.
One day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a debt-buyback, U.S. bond yields are once again surging. 30-year bonds, which were the main target of yesterday’s government buyback, rose 6 basis points to 5.256%. Ten-year T-bills moved up 5 basis points to 4.704%. Bessent’s announcement to at least double the size of government bond buybacks beginning September 9 and continuing through November 4 will cost even more now that rates are continuing to rise. The Treasury Department also updated the national debt total – now over $40 trillion. https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/20/bond-yields-edge-higher-as-traders-digest-treasury-debt-buyback-plan.html
Walmart today reported its slowest growth in U.S. comparable sales in six years – 2.6% in the second quarter, down from 4.1% in the first quarter. Its stock fell 8% on the news. Thanks to tariff refunds, quarterly profit and revenue topped expectations. The retailer said today it is using those refunds to temporarily lower prices on 11k items in its stores. The biggest growth area for Walmart is e-commerce. The sector now represents 23% of overall U.S. business, double the share from five years ago. https://apnews.com/article/walmart-quarter-earnings-inflation-tariffs-955945e03ffcc111389d62fa3103a051
The U.S. and Canada have reached a last-minute deal to delay 50% tariffs on $20b worth of Canadian imports. President Trump on Tuesday announced the new taxes were supposed to begin tomorrow, but will be put off for three days to allow time to finalize details of a trade agreement between the two countries. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trump spoke by phone twice in the past two days about the ongoing negotiations as both countries step back from the brink of another trade war. For this round of tariffs, Trump reached back to the Tariff Act of 1930, known as the Smoot-Hawley tariffs which are notorious among economists and historians for limiting world commerce and plunging the world deeper into the Great Depression. https://apnews.com/article/tariffs-trump-canada-usmca-trade-aae597c22617bec7a99f670a2c787ef9
Entertainment conglomerate Live Nation has purchased the historic Wonder Bread building in downtown San Diego’s East Village with plans to convert the property into a 4k-seat music venue. It was designated a local historic landmark in 2001. The sale of the 102-year old property at 171 14th Street to Live Nation was completed in June. The publicly traded company is now seeking permits to preserve and rehabilitate the historic portion as a box office, entrance and lobby for a new state-of-the-art ballroom-size entertainment venue. Live Nation expects to have it open in the fall of 2028, hosting around 85 to 90 shows per year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/08/17/live-nation-converting-san-diegos-historic-wonder-bread-building-into-music-venue/

One streaming service may finally be pushing customers too far. Peacock is raising its price for the fourth straight year – this time by as much as $3 a month. The hike comes just as the NBCUniversal streaming service reported its first quarter of profitability. The new rate for the top tier of service is now $20 per month – pretty much the highest of any single-stream service. The “Select” service tier goes up from $8 to 9. It includes a limited number of shows and no live sports. The “Premium” plan still has ads, but includes the entire Peacock catalog and all of the platform’s live-streamed sports is going up $2 to $13 per month. Annual subscriptions are going up $10, $20 and $30 respectively. The move comes just as football season is beginning. Peacock will once again host all Sunday Night Football games including an exclusive one in January. Notre Dame and the Big Ten are also just around the corner on Peacock. And the NBA will be on Peacock again. https://thestreamable.com/peacock-price-increases-2026?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=sendgrid
It’s probably been a long time since you saw or heard ads proclaiming “11 tapes or records for only one dollar.” Columbia House became a household name in the 1980s and 1990s for its club featuring monthly deliveries of records, tapes, CDs, and later, DVDs. At its peak, Columbia House had annual revenue of $1.4b. But the rise of the internet and digital music and video put an end to those days. In 2015, Columbia House filed for bankruptcy and was sold to Edge Line Ventures. You probably thought they were already gone. But the current version of the company still has a website that offers just a few DVD titles. Soon, even that’s going away. A statement from the company says that after seven decades, Columbia House will cease operations completely – possibly next month. https://www.cnn.com/2026/08/19/media/columbia-house-shut-down
Now that zero-emission vehicle sales are rebounding, California is pledging $95.2m to build more electric-vehicle charging and hydrogen refueling sites in the state. Gov. Newsom announced the funding today with the money to be spent in the current fiscal year. About half the total will go for light-duty EV charging stations, $30.2m for medium and heavy duty zero emissions infrastructure, $15m for hydrogen refueling and $2m for ZEV workforce training and equipment. Hydrogen has a better foothold in LA and Orange Counties. San Diego County currently has only two hydrogen fueling stations. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/08/18/california-investing-95m-for-more-ev-and-hydrogen-fueling-stations/
