LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Multiple lanes of southbound I-5 in Camp Pendleton remain closed as of noon after at least a half dozen vehicles on a car carrier caught fire near the Aliso Creek Rest Area this morning at about 5:30a.  At noon, southbound traffic was still backed up from Basilone Road all the way through Camp Pendleton to Oceanside. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/08/27/southbound-i-5-near-camp-pendleton-slowed-after-fire-destroys-vehicles-on-car-carrier/

One person was hospitalized after a 2-vehicle crash at Highway 76 and Via Monserate early yesterday morning.  One vehicle rear-ended the other at a stop sign, with both ending up in a ditch, obscuring them from the roadway.  Some fencing and a traffic light were damaged.  No further details. Two people were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision on Grand Avenue in Lake Elsinore Tuesday evening.   One of the victims, 22-year old Audry Morales’ Camaro crossed into the path of a southbound Camry.  56-year old Joseph Collins, the driver of the Camry died later at Inland Valley Medical Center.  Two others in the Camaro were hospitalized with major injuries.  It’s not known if either driver was impaired. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2026/08/26/2-dead-2-injured-in-head-on-collision-in-lake-elsinore/

Escondido Police will be holding a sobriety checkpoint somewhere in that city tomorrow evening from 5p to 1a.  Locations are chosen based on data showing the number of impaired driving-related crashes on that road.  https://www.times-advocate.com/articles/epd-holding-dui-checkpoint-friday-august-28/

The massive Southwest heatwave is expected to peak today.  Temperature records were broken yesterday in Ramona at 104 and Campo at 106.  Sea surface temperatures jumped to 76 in Carlsbad and La Jolla yesterday.  Pala will have two more days over 100, dropping back to the high 80s next week.  The full forecast is coming up. SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres shut out the visiting Pirates 3-0 yesterday afternoon.  Randy Vasquez got his 10^th win of the season.  Jackson Merrill doubled, tripled, drove in a run and scored one himself.  Atlanta broke the Dodgers’ six-game win streak, edging them 6-5 yesterday.  Arizona shut out the visiting Cubs on a day that set a weather record in Phoenix at 117 degrees.  The Angels lost to the Guardians 4-3.  In yesterday’s 10-4 win by the White Sox over Texas, Tristan Peters tied a franchise record and matched an MLB rookie record by hitting a home run in five consecutive games.  The Padres and Angels are off today.  The Dodgers conclude their series at Atlanta.  And Arizona is at San Francisco. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49738060/peters-ties-white-sox-record-homer-5th-straight-game

In the minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm got routed last night at Rancho Cucamonga, 14-1.  Game 3 of 6 is tonight.

In the NFL – We’ve seen our last Pro Bowl game.  The league announced today that the annual exhibition game featuring all the top players is no more.  88 players will still be named as Pro Bowlers with accompanying honors, which was the intent of the event.  Even the players have said they “don’t want competitive play” after the playoffs.  NFL executive vice-president Peter O’Reilly called it “a shift from the game to the honor.” https://apnews.com/article/pro-bowl-ends-nfl-837191baa459e7afd7a4c7603dc41101 

NFL owners have unanimously approved the sale of the Seattle Seahawks to Vinod Khosla and his vamily.  They’re currently part-owners of the San Francisco 49ers.  The agreement to buy the reigning Super Bowl champion franchise for $9.612b was first announced July 11.  The family will have to sell their interest in the 49ers as part of the deal.  They purchased 3.1% in 2025.  Khosla is the founder of a Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm.  According to Forbes, his current net worth is $13.7b. https://apnews.com/article/nfl-owners-seahawks-sale-cbeece035eb56f26c7d789a2b8971f01

In the WNBA – Yesterday’s winners were Golden State and Seattle.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained a third of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up 7 tenths.  And the Nasdaq advanced 1.4%.  Gold gained $13 on the Comex, trading at $4,667.30 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 58 cents to $82.81 a barrel.

Coinciding with the trade war against Canada, President Trump today singed an executive order changing the name of Lake Ontario on the border with Canada to Lake America.

Nvidia told investors yesterday it expects 70% revenue growth in 2028, sending the chipmaker’s stock up 4.71% in after-hours trading last night.  Seen as an AI industry leader, Nvidia’s announcement calmed investors’ fears about a developing AI bubble. www.morningbrew.com

On the other hand, Bill Gates wrote an essay yesterday saying. “AI will either be the greatest equalizer every invented, or the worst source of injustice.”  He fears that “there is no plan to ease the entry into the AI era.”  And that the challenges to doing that aren’t being adequately confronted.  Among points made by Gates: “The threat that AI and robotics present to blue- and white-collar jobs isn’t comparable to previous technological transitions, which happened over generations and resulted in tech that required—not replaced—human cognition.”  He also wrote, “This would be the worst possible time for humans to lose their critical thinking skills,” referencing the rise of deepfakes and chatbot cooperation with AI’s burgeoning capabilities for cyberattacks and bioterrorism. www.morningbrew.com

Something to keep in mind regarding this week’s $17b settlement of the Meta kids’ social media addiction case.  Media experts are pointing out that the penalty is the least important part.  Meta earned $200b last year.  A $17b fine isn’t much more than a speeding ticket.  As proof, Meta stock went up after the announcement.  The important thing is the promised changes because they run counter to Meta business interest, which is to keep users on its platforms for the longest possible time.  Users under 18 get only two hours a day on the apps and none between midnight and 6a.  Notifications are banned during school hours.  Prompts will remind the underage user at 15 minutes, 60 minutes, and again at 90 consecutive minutes of platform use.  Like counts will go away.  Young users will no longer be able to digitally alter their appearance.  Meta is also promising other unspecified protections against “unwanted contact from strangers.”  Age verification is key, and it’s unclear how Meta will do a better job of making sure users are who they say they are.  Though settled, this case is far from over.  And finally, Meta is only on the hook for the full $17b if TikTok, YouTube, Snap and other competitors voluntarily go along with the changes.  Otherwise, Meta has only agreed to $12b.  But the others will certainly look bad if they don’t go along and will be subject to the same type of lawsuits that led to the Meta settlement.    www.NYTimes.com

Parent company Sapporo USA say they can’t find a viable long-term solution for the Stone Brewery location in Escondido and will wind-down the operation there over the next three months.  Phased layoffs will begin in October.  The location will close in November.  Stone Brewery locations in Oceanside, downtown San Diego, Pasadena and at Liberty Station will not be affected.  Actual brewing production is moving to Firestone Walker’s facilities in Paso Robles and Kansas City. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2026/08/21/stone-brewing-cutting-hundreds-of-jobs-as-production-moves-out-of-san-diego-county/

A measure requiring the California Legislature and courts to formally apologize to the state’s Native Americans for the state’s role in atrocities committed against them during the early formation of the state and its entry into the Union was approved on a unanimous bipartisan vote in the state Senate this week.   Assemblymember James C. Ramos, the first California Native American elected to the Legislature, introduced AB 2115, that would create the Rowena Mare Ramos Act in honor of the legislator’s mother and also require that a plaque be displayed in the State Capitol to memorialize the Legislature’s apology.  AB 2115 is sponsored by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.  (Asm. On this day in music history – August 27,

• 1965, on the last of a five-day break in LA from their North American concert tour, The Beatles attended a recording session for The Byrds.  Later in the day they met Elvis Presley at his Beverly Hills mansion.  He’d been an idol of John Lennon’s.  But the awkward meeting that day left them with a poor impression of “The King”. 
• In 1966, the Beach Boys’ single of “God Only Knows” was at #2 on the British charts.  In the U.S. it topped out at #39 because it had only been released as the B-side of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”.  Nevertheless, it was voted #25 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.  It was unique in that it mentioned God in the title and lyrics and included several unorthodox instruments for a pop or rock song – French horns, accordions, a sleigh bell, harpsichord, and a string quartet – with both its recording and release preceding The Beatles equally unorthodox “Eleanor Rigby” by a month. 
• In 1967, British music entrepreneur and manager of The Beatles, Brian Epstein was found dead of a sleeping pill overdose, locked in bedroom of his London home. 
• In 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughn died in a helicopter crash in dense fog following a concert with Eric Clapton and Robert Cray in East Troy, Wisconsin.  Three members of Clapton’s entourage also died in the crash. 
• In 1991, Pearl Jam released their debut album, “Ten”.  It produced three hit singles and sold 13m copies.
• In 1992, John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics to “A Day in the Life” sold at auction for $100k.  18 years later the same auction house sold them again for $1.2m.
• In 1994, Boyz II Men began the first of 14 weeks at #1 with “I’ll Make Love to You”. 
• In 2004, Green Day, White Stripes, Morrissey, 50 Cent and about ten other groups played at the UK Carling Weekend in Reading and Leeds, England.  50 Cent was greeted with a rain of bottles thrown at him and his G-Unit crew and booed off stage.
